"To Sir William Young, Bart., late Captain-General and Governor in Chief of his Majesty's Island of Dominica and First Commissioner for the Disposal of Lands in the ceded islands, F.R.S. &c., &c., &c. ... by Sayer and Bennett." The dedication page is illustrated. This is a superb atlas of the West Indies and a companion atlas to Jeffery's American Atlas also first issued in 1775. The latest date on the charts in this copy is 1788 (The Cape Verd Islands). There is a beautifully illustrated title page that precedes the main title page, which reads "The West Indian Atlas..." Jefferys died in 1771, Sayer and Bennet acquired his materials in preparation for this atlas, and published the atlas posthumously under his name (as they did with the American Atlas) in 1775. The heart of this atlas and the most detailed part is the sixteen sheet large chart and index sheet of the whole of the West Indies. The rest of the atlas consists of charts of the Atlantic Islands and the British Channel, as well as individual maps and charts of seventeen islands in the West Indies. Twenty seven pages of text gives the sources for the maps and charts, and a historical account of the West Indies. Three of the large chart maps also appeared in the American Atlas. Comparing the two Florida sheets in this atlas to the same sheets in the 1775 American Atlas, numerous changes to the coast lines and other features appear. That would indicate that Sayer updated the charts as the atlas was reissued - Phillips shows issues of 1775, 1781, 1787, 1794, 1796, 1807, and 1818. With the 1794 and later editions, 20 maps are added of various additional islands. Sayer and Bennet also published in 1775 a smaller version of this atlas called "The West India Islands: From Actual Survey and Observations..." that consisted of the same text, a general chart of the Islands, and the same sixteen or seventeen (depending on the edition) charts of the islands that appear in the larger version (P3942). | Note |
An early deed with the large (9cm diameter) seal of the state attached. The State granted lands in what was designated as the Military Tract to Revolutionary War veterans. The tract comprised twenty five townships of 60,000 acres each, each consisting of 100 lots of 600 acres. Grantees received one lot. Thomas Garrison was granted lot 80 of Township 25, Cincinnatus, by this deed. In 1793, Simeon DeWitt produced a map of the Military Tract, one of his first surveys. The Military Tract was one of the first uses of Township surveys built on square lots of uniform size. Eventually, the U.S. Land Office used a 660 acre unit (1 mile square) as the building block for its surveys in Ohio and westward. Printed form filled in with pen-and-ink and including the signature of Geo. Clinton. |

Wheat & Brun: "This is the best map of Pennsylvania to appear in the 18th century, and the first detailed map of the State to show its exact boundaries." This copy is a mixed state, as is usually the case, with the title and dedication in the first state. It is fully colored by county by a contemporary hand. Wheat & Brun list the first four states as 1792, with states V and VI as 1795, state VII as 1798, and state VIII as 1806. Ristow lists later editions of 1816 and 1817 published by Emmor Kimber in Philadelphia. Howell also published a smaller Map of Pennsylvania, reduced from the large map, in 1792, with later issues in 1795 and 1796, Ristow lists editions of 1811 and 1817. Howell's maps were the first maps of the state published after the revolution, and were used until Melish published his map in 1822. Samuel Lewis used Howell's map as the source for his Pennsylvania map in Carey's American Atlas of 1795. Map is dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into its original brown leather slip case 24x17.5 with "Howell's Map" printed on the front in ink, and then into a new dark green cloth folding case 25x18 with -Pennsylvania R. Howell 1792" stamped on the spine in gold. |

| Note |
These four maps show the Ohio River from Pittsburgh to the Mississippi, at a very large scale, and would make a map over ten feet long if joined end to end. These maps of the Ohio are the best and most original maps in the atlas: "The beautifully executed map of the Ohio River depicts vividly the wilderness that this country was at the time of his journey" (Wagner Camp). The level of detail is great: individual farms are shown with the owner's names, soundings for the entire river length, towns and villages, swamps, natural curiosities, rapids, and much else. When compared with Zadock Cramer's maps of the river in his "Navigator," the Collot maps are much superior, containing far more information on the river depths and surrounding shores and islands. Thomas Hutchins large map shows the Ohio well, but only at about one fourth the scale of the Collot maps, Andrew Ellicott's two maps of the river, at about one third the Collot scale, leave large stretches to conjecture. As an 1805 printing of a 1796 journey, these maps are without equal in depicting the early settlements on the Ohio. Without color. |
