Maps dated 1822-1842. Shows Texas as Republic. Shows some of the Jedediah Smith information on the N. America and Mexico maps. See Wheat 403 & 404, and 413 & 420. Wheat seems to miss the Picquet Mexico map in his discussion, although he lists it in the cartobibliography. The Mexico atlas map is dated 1840 and is a combination of the J. Arrowsmith British N. America 1837, the larger Brue 1834 Mexico map and the 1833 Brue Map of North America. Phillips shows an 1834 edition and an 1839 edition of the atlas. Both have the Mexico map dated 1825. Bancroft has a Mexico dated 1825 with Picquet's stamp dated 1835 - this map does not have the new Arrowsmith/Smith information. Thus we think this 1840 Mexico is the first to be changed since the original 1825 edition. The Brue Mexico 1834 large map, and U.S. 1836 large map with inset of Oregon both, and especially the Mexico map, have Smith information. Picquet engraved both maps, yet it took him five years or so to put the Smith information on the Mexico map in this atlas. The maps are hand painted with both outline and full color, and bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with a green paper label printed with the title "Atlas universel de geographie ancienne et moderne ..." The leather spine is embossed with "Brue. Atlas de geographie ancienne et moderne" in gold. |

Considered to be the best book on California prior to the American occupation. Wheat calls the large map "a landmark...It made these western regions known in European official circles...his highly original map has much to commend it." Wheat neglects to mention the similarities between this map and the John Arrowsmith Map of British North America, 1837 edition. While not a copy of the Arrowsmith, it clearly followed the Arrowsmith map in most areas. The atlas volume contains, in addition to the large map, plans of ports from Acapulco to the Aleutians, including San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and the mouth of the Columbia. The chart of San Francisco Bay is based on Beechey's chart of 1833, improved by de Mofras' own explorations, particularly in the north bay. This copy belonged to the Prince of Coburg, with a presentation inscription from the author. The large map is hand painted in outline color, all others are without color. Covers of the volumes are half leather dark green cloth covered boards with a crown embossed on the front in gilt. The title "De Mofras. Mexique. Californie. Oregon. 1" is stamped in gilt on the spine of volume one, "... 2" on volume two, and "...Atlas" on the atlas. Rare. |

The first Cerographic Atlas of the United States. Originally Issued in three parts starting in 1842 and ending in 1845 (although Woodward states that it cannot be determined how many parts were issued, our copy indicates three parts), This copy is the 1845 edition, which is a reissue of the 1842 - 1845 edition with some changes to the maps and the addition of color. Library of Congress copy (Phillips, 1228) and this copy have no Oregon map and no separate map of Iowa, as issued. When the atlas was issued in parts (Phillips, 1383) there was an Oregon map and an Iowa map listed. However, this 1845 ed. adds 6 maps not in the 1st ed.: North America, Canada east, Canada west, Nova Scotia - New Brunswick &c., West India Islands, and Wisconsin Southern Part. Rare reissue of 1842 Greenleaf Universal Atlas. Many changes from the 1842 edition: Florida a State, Michigan entirely redrawn, Mexican War results on North American map, Mexico, Texas, Oregon changes to show 1846 boundary with Canada, Missionary stations listed on the Hemispheres, and many new railroads, counties, boundaries, etc. There are more changes between this edition and the 1842, than between the 1842 and Burr's 1836. Not in Karpinski, which is strange because Michigan is totally redrawn, not in Phillips or any other reference. There is also an 1849 edition (property of C.W.) that has similar maps except the Mexico map does not reflect the Mexican War boundary - probably he was running out of maps and this was at the bottom of the stack! Has the same Geography text in the rear, unchanged. The Wisconsin and Iowa map in this copy differs from an 1848 in Fitch Catalogue 48, #314, in having Mandan Dist. instead of Missouri Territory in the Fitch, making this copy probably later (the 1842 has Missouri Territory). Burr's name is no longer on the map of Illinois. Maps are in full color. Bound in half leather, floral patterned blue cloth covered boards with "The Universal Atlas" stamped in gold. Spine reads "Atlas". Marbled lining. |

This is the most scarce of the mid 19th century German atlases, at least in the United States collections or trade. Espenhorst devotes an entire section of his book to the "Atlasfamilie Sohr-Berghaus" but the LOC has no copies of any issues. Occasionally individual maps show up under the name of Flemming or Berghaus (as in Wheat and Day). One of the most interesting maps in the atlas, found in the 32 map supplement, is a reduced edition of Arrowsmith's Map of Texas of 1841, here probably issued in 1845 or 46, the date the supplement first appeared. Also: Californien, Oregon, Utah und Neu-Mejico, Das Oregon-Gebiet, c. 1846 and based on De Mofras, here tipped in to the atlas, Mexico, Mittel-America, Texas (Wheat 745), Vereinigte Staaten (Wheat 748), Britisches Nord-America (also from Arrowsmith), and a four sheet Vereinigte Staaten von Nordamerika by F. Handtke (not seen by Wheat). It appears that all the maps were lithographed by Flemming, which was unusual for the period -- most of the other German atlas of that date were engraved. An additional six maps follow the 32 map supplement, of the areas around European Turkey and Hungary. Maps are hand painted with outline color and bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with an orange paper label reading "Sohr's Hand-Atlas uber alle Theile der Erde." in gold, the new leather spine has "Sohr's Atlas" stamped in gilt. |
