List No 2467B
Note This is the first American "road book" and shows great detail in a series of strip maps of various routes around the middle Atlantic states. See the last image in this series for a key map showing the areas depicted by the maps. This set has 66 of 83 published maps. Rare - Ristow estimates only 30-35 copies extant. See Ristow's reproduction edition of this book for a complete discussion of Colles. With the volume are nine unbound maps from the set: 23, 24, 25, 33, 40, 41, 42, 44, and 45. Maps have been rebound in hardbound green leather covers with Colles's Roads in gilt on spine. Original blue paper covers bound at the back with title label "Colles's Survey of the Roads."

Note The title page is dated 1817 and the text is unchanged from the 1817 edition, but the Melish base map is changed from the 1817 edition Melish map to one that shows all of Florida and Missouri and Arkansas (with Arkansas in an 1828 formation). The map is the second state (White 1817B), although it is really an entirely different map. It is similar to the Map of The United States that appears in Melish's Traveler's Guide of 1822 and in Carey and Lea's American Atlas, but it has been reengraved, and the title is changed to United States of North America. It is colored geologically, but there is no color key. The same map appears in the Jackson Wreath of 1829, but in an earlier state. Bound in at the back is the "Essay..." mentioned above. This copy belonged to Francis P. Farquhar, noted California historian. Bound in brown cloth covers with "Geology" printed in gold on the spine.

Note By Tanner's son. Uses Universal Atlas map of Philadelphia. Publications by Tanner's son Henry Jr. are not common. He is listed as publisher of several of H.S. Tanner's works in the early 1840's (see 1842 Traveler's Guide and 1841 "Central States") but this is the only work we have seen where he is the author as well. Excellent 36 page catalogue of "Maps and Geographical Works for sale by H. Tanner, Jun'r. Philadelphia." The works listed are all the H.S. Tanner publications. It appears that Tanner's sons, T.R. Tanner and H. Tanner, Jun'r. divided the business between New York and Philadelphia respectively and took over responsibility for selling H.S. Tanner's products , and others, from 1840 until around 1850. T.R. was in partnership with John Disturnell for a time in the early 1840's (see Tanner and Disturnell). Map and guide are in brown cloth covers 13x8.5 with "Philadelphia City Guide. 1841" stamped in gold.

Scarce - Eberstadt: "A very rare guide, with a description of the new territory, its government, judiciary, counties, population, list of townships etc." The map shows the eastern part of the Iowa Territory, along the Mississippi River, and is more detailed than the General Land Office survey maps of 1839-40. List No 2521.002
Note Map has many changes from 1839 edition. Michigan peninsula has been redrawn, Missouri Territory is now Indian Territory, many changes in roads, towns, etc. Inset map of New Orleans has been dropped to show the emerging Iowa (the same change Tanner made in 1842 with his Traveller's Guide). The text adds population figures for 1840. The condition of this guide is remarkably fine - it must not have been used, just put away for 150 years. Covers are stamped red leather with "Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States" in gilt. Outline color. The map contains eight inset maps showing the vicinities of Cincinnati, Albany, Falls of Niagara, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston.

Philadelphia 1849 Published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. Entered ... 1848, by Thomas, Cowperthwait, & Co. ... Pennsylvania. (with 5 inset maps).
List No 2766.002
Note This is a major revision of the guide with an entirely new map by Ira S. Drake (about whom we find nothing) with five inset maps entitled - "Vicinity Of Niagara Falls", "Map Of The Copper Mine Region", "Map of the Gold and Quicksilver district of California", "Map of the Maritime and Overland Routes to California", and "Map Of New England Or Eastern States". The map emphasis on the California gold rush is clear, although the 128 pages of expanded text do not yet list routes to the gold fields, while they do add routes west from St. Louis and Independence. The main map is larger than the earlier Mitchell/Young maps, but shows roughly the same area on a somewhat larger scale. An "Advertisement" (actually a preface) dated Nov. 1, 1848, states: "The following work is similar in design to 'Mitchell's Traveller's Guide,' first published about twelve years ago, and which has been so extremely patronized, that it may be safely asserted no book of the kind ever printed in this country has met with so wide a circulation." Covers are black stamped leather with "Mitchell's New Traveller's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration of a steam boat and train stamped in gilt. Map is outline color. Catalogue of Thomas, Cowperthwait School Books included in the text.

List No 4226.002
Note Guide Book, 124 p., includes: Index to Rail Roads and Index to General Routes. The contents calls for only one map but a second new map is added of the entire U.S., from the Mitchell Universal Atlas plate. The Drake1856 map adds J.L. Hazzard to the title and compared to the 1855 issue shows several new proposed railroads, particularly in the area west of the Missouri River (possibly the proposed Pacific Railroad routes). The Mitchell/Young U.S. map is slightly different from the same map in the 1856 Universal Atlas, in its showing of the Pacific Railroad routes. Bound in dark green leather covers with "Mitchell's New Traveler's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration stamped in gilt. The two insets in the first map are titled "Gold Region Of California" and "District Of Columbia". Both maps in outline color. Prime meridians are in Washington D.C. and Greenwich.
