First edition of Tanner's guide. In pocket map form, with the map and no text, as issued. Ristow says the first edition was 1834, and while that was the first issue of the enlarged guide with text, this 1825 map is from the same plate as the 1834 map and thus should be seen as the first edition of the guide. The entire lower right corner of the map is taken up with lists of "Steam Boat Routes Throughout the United States," which are keyed to letters in the map margins. In the 1834 and later editions, these lists are replaced with inset maps of U.S. cities, and the lists are given, along with added stage and railroad routes, in the body of the text. Outline color by state. In red leather covers, 13x8, gilt stamped "Traveller's Guide Through The U. States." |

By Tanner's son. Uses Universal Atlas map of Philadelphia. Publications by Tanner's son Henry Jr. are not common. He is listed as publisher of several of H.S. Tanner's works in the early 1840's (see 1842 Traveler's Guide and 1841 "Central States") but this is the only work we have seen where he is the author as well. Excellent 36 page catalogue of "Maps and Geographical Works for sale by H. Tanner, Jun'r. Philadelphia." The works listed are all the H.S. Tanner publications. It appears that Tanner's sons, T.R. Tanner and H. Tanner, Jun'r. divided the business between New York and Philadelphia respectively and took over responsibility for selling H.S. Tanner's products , and others, from 1840 until around 1850. T.R. was in partnership with John Disturnell for a time in the early 1840's (see Tanner and Disturnell). Map and guide are in brown cloth covers 13x8.5 with "Philadelphia City Guide. 1841" stamped in gold. |

The text adds population figures for 1840. The condition of this guide is remarkably fine - it must not have been used, just put away for 150 years. Issued separately in pocket map form, linen backed (High Ridge #108 in Cat 18), and in the Traveler's and Tourist's Guide Book (and Route Book) Through the United States of America and the Canadas. First edition was 1850 (Howes C623) by Colton, Howes says the guide is descended from J. Calvin Smith's Guide of 1846, the map is slightly larger scale than the Smith and larger in size, and it is clearly related. Another example of the Colton/Smith relationship - this Guide, the Western Guide, and the Large Map of the U.S. and the Canadas. This map is derived from the large wall map of the United States of America (see our #3960). The division between the two plates used to make this portion of the wall map is visible in Tenn. and N. Carolina. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. |

Issued separately in pocket map form, linen backed (High Ridge #108 in Cat 18), and in the Traveler's and Tourist's Guide Book (and Route Book) Through the United States of America and the Canadas. First edition was 1850 (Howes C623) by Colton, Howes says the guide is descended from J. Calvin Smith's Guide of 1846, the map is slightly larger scale than the Smith and larger in size, and it is clearly related. Another example of the Colton/Smith relationship - this Guide, the Western Guide, and the Large Map of the U.S. and the Canadas. This map is derived from the large wall map of the United States of America (see our #3960). The division between the two plates used to make this portion of the wall map is visible in Tenn. and N. Carolina. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. |

Second edition, with Karrow showing editions of 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1867 and 1871. This is the only map we have seen that has G. Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt.
