This is a superb atlas of the West Indies and a companion atlas to Jeffery's American Atlas also first issued in 1775. The latest date on the charts in this copy is 1788 (The Cape Verd Islands). There is a beautifully illustrated title page that precedes the main title page, which reads "The West Indian Atlas..." Jefferys died in 1771, Sayer and Bennet acquired his materials in preparation for this atlas, and published the atlas posthumously under his name (as they did with the American Atlas) in 1775. The heart of this atlas and the most detailed part is the sixteen sheet large chart and index sheet of the whole of the West Indies. The rest of the atlas consists of charts of the Atlantic Islands and the British Channel, as well as individual maps and charts of seventeen islands in the West Indies. Twenty seven pages of text gives the sources for the maps and charts, and a historical account of the West Indies. Three of the large chart maps also appeared in the American Atlas. Comparing the two Florida sheets in this atlas to the same sheets in the 1775 American Atlas, numerous changes to the coast lines and other features appear. That would indicate that Sayer updated the charts as the atlas was reissued - Phillips shows issues of 1775, 1781, 1787, 1794, 1796, 1807, and 1818. This is a superb atlas of the West Indies and a companion atlas to Jeffery's American Atlas also first issued in 1775. The latest date on the charts in this copy is 1788 (The Cape Verd Islands). There is a beautifully illustrated title page that precedes the main title page, which reads "The West Indian Atlas..." Jefferys died in 1771, Sayer and Bennet acquired his materials in preparation for this atlas, and published the atlas posthumously under his name (as they did with the American Atlas) in 1775. The heart of this atlas and the most detailed part is the sixteen sheet large chart and index sheet of the whole of the West Indies. The rest of the atlas consists of charts of the Atlantic Islands and the British Channel, as well as individual maps and charts of seventeen islands in the West Indies. This is a very unusual Lucas atlas - according to Foster, only two copies are known. The engraved title page shows a globe and books on a table, with pages open listing Lucas' products: "Drawing Materials of every kind, Paper of all sizes, Mathematical Instruments, Globes, Maps, and Atlases of every description suitable for Colleges and Schools constantly for sale by the Publisher." It has 31 of the Tanner and Harrison engraved maps of the continents and foreign countries that appeared in the (1815) and (1816) "New And Elegant General Atlas" (only Netherlands bears Lucas' imprint, engraved by Young & Delleker, and is basically the same as the map that appears in the 1823 "General Atlas Containing Distinct Maps..." ). Of the remaining 36 maps, 8 are of South America and the West Indies and are unchanged in the 1823 atlas, the other 28 maps are in many cases early states of the new U.S. maps that appear in the 1823 atlas and replace the Tanner engraved U.S. maps of 1815 and 1816 atlases. They all have Lucas' imprint and show various engravers, Welch, Young & Delker, Cone & Freeman, Kneass, and Hufty. Compared to the early 1823 atlas (our #4584), 16 of the 28 U.S. maps are earlier issues, with only one being a later issue - New Hampshire shows Merrimack County (1823) which does not appear on the early 1823 atlas map (this was probably drawn in anticipation of creation). Of particular note are: Louisiana, a double page map engraved by Harrison and "Reduced from W. Darby's Four Sheet Map" which is dated 1817 as does not show Alabama or Arkansas Territory, and a map of "North Western and Michigan Territories" which is the same base map as the 1823 "Michigan Ter." but shows a much smaller Michigan in a configuration that Paullin dates as 1819 with a large North Western Territory extending to the west. This is the first edition (and perhaps the only edition). The title calls for ten maps, but there are actually 11 maps, one U.S. map and ten state maps. Each state map (actually, groups of states) is accompanied by an index sheet of places on the map. The state maps appear in the 1825 Universal atlas by Morse (see our #3812) where some of the maps are updated. Pasted on the cover is a slip with a lovely engraving of a globe with "Morse's new atlas of the United States on an improved plan..." on it. Scarce. |
