Map of New London and Windha …
1833
Wall Map
Authors Lester, William Jun.
Full Title Map of New London and Windham Counties In Conn. from Actual Survey.
List No 3721.000
Note One of the first county wall maps of a New England state. Nothing is known about William Lester and this and the Norwich map may be the only maps he made. There are eight inset maps of towns in the counties and a large inset "Geological Map of Windham & New London Counties From the surveys of Lt. W.W. Mather, U.S.M.A. 1832." A small red paste on label says "Colored And Put Up by C.S. Williams, N. Haven, Conn." One of the insets shows the projected Boston, Norwich & New London Rail Road - the earliest charting of a Connecticut railroad (Thompson). The map is exceedingly well done, with the drawing and the engraving of the highest quality for the period. It is rare - the only reference found was in Thompson's listing.

List No 4822.001
Note This scarce map shows a large band of central California from San Francisco Bay to Virginia City, Nevada. The showing of railroads is extensive with a separate table listing the engineers for each road. Topography is delineated in "crayon" style resulting in a very clear rendition of the Coast Range and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The mining camps are shown in great number and the overall detail is most impressive with a 4 miles to 1 inch scale. The Whitney Survey "Map of Central California" of 1873 is the only map that we know of that is comparable, yet it is eight years later, at a scale of 6 miles to 1 inch, and runs from west to east from San Francisco Bay, thus ending at Mono Lake and missing Lake Tahoe. This 1865 map runs from southwest to northeast, covering Lake Tahoe and extending to Pyramid Lake in Nevada. We have not seen any map of central California of this period that has the clarity and detail of this map. The map was copyrighted in 1865 by Hoffmann and Poett, about whom not much is known, except that Hoffmann made a "Topographical Map of Lake Tahoe..." in 1874 with Ferdinand Von Leicht (Graff 4497), it is not clear why Bielawski was not also listed on the copyright - perhaps because he was for many years surveyor for the U.S. General Land Office in San Francisco. Haiman states that Bielawski "was considered the most important person in the Land Office, that he personally surveyed and was generally recognized as the best authority on real property titles in the state." This copy is folded into untitled brown cloth covers stamped with a decorative border.

Note Magnificent, huge atlas showing the area of the 40th Parallel Survey in topographical and geological maps. Wheat notes: "These are pioneer survey maps, and as such are most interesting. Mapping the West in so broad a cross-section had never before been attempted, a portent of things to come." King, at the age of 25, was made Geologist-in-charge of the Survey in 1867. He was formally ordered "to examine and describe the geological structure, geographical condition and natural resources of a belt of country extending from the 120th meridian eastward to the 105th meridian, along the 40th parallel of latitude with sufficient expansion north and south to include the lines of 'Central' and 'Union Pacific' railroads..." (Wheat). The topographical sheets depict features by brush shading rather than hachuring. In original binding -rare. Bound in green half leather with a label on the front, "Geological and Topographical Atlas Accompanying the Report of the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel. Clarence King, Geologist in Charge."
