Clark II-41. Third and best edition. Streeter: "The most complete version of this work, in which form it was the most informative compilation on the West at the end of the 18th century." Complete text of Filson's Kentucky, Hutchins on Florida, etc., and much else. The Map of the State of Kentucky, by Elihu Barker is a slight reduction in size from the original by Carey, but not as great a reduction as the edition of the map that appeared in Carey's American Atlas and General Atlas in 1795 (cf Wheat & Brun 641, 642). The London version of the Barker map seems to have the same information as the Philadelphia, but they are very different in engraving style with the Philadelphia copy having an "American" look. Clark is critical of the accuracy of Imlay's letters, which were probably written in Europe after he fled Kentucky and financial problems. See DAB for another critical view of Mr. Imlay. |

The Spanish "Vancouver." Atlas volume only, first edition. Sometimes attributed to Dionisio Alcala Galiano. The title of the text volume is "Relacion del Viage Hecho por las Goletas Sutil y Mexicana en al ano 1792 para reconocer el estrecho de Fuca..." The last and very important voyage up the Pacific coast to be undertaken by Spain is detailed in the nine maps and eight plates of the atlas. Galiano and Cayetano Valdes led the expedition, arriving in the northwest at the same time as Vancouver. Although the maps were published four years after the Vancouver maps, Wagner considers them in many respects to be superior, and Humboldt used them in his Essai Politique sur le Royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne. Wagner further states: "The general impression today...is that the English discoveries of Vancouver were published four years before those of the Spaniards. This...is a misapprehension... The principal reason, however, why the nomenclature and geography of Vancouver came to occupy the field was that his maps were extensively copied by the famous English cartographer, Aaron Arrowsmith, and later by the English Admiralty." |

1st edition. Notwithstanding the title, Nicholas Biddle completed the text after Lewis's suicide. The map and the written account of the expedition changed American mapping of the northwest by giving the first accurate depiction of the relationship of the sources of the Missouri, the sources of the Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains. The map was copied by Samuel Lewis from William Clark's original drawing, and was engraved by Samuel Harrison. The title of the map is "A Map of Lewis and Clark's Track, Across the Western Portion of North America From the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean ..." Maps are without color. In 2 volumes newly bound in full leather with the title "Lewis & Clark's Expedition ..." stamped in gilt on the spine. |

Volumes 22x15 in half-leather and marble paper covered boards with "Lewis & Clark - Travels" and volume number on spine. |

Reynold's penciled notations challenge Wilkes' narrative repeatedly and seem to lay the basis for the Memorial of Officers published in 1847 (and tipped in this set). This is the scarce Senate issue with four maps by "Baron" Egloffstein. Egloffstein used a unique engraving process to achieve a superb rendering of topographical features, he used the same technique in the map is drew for Macomb's Report (see our #2699). Of the maps in Ives's Report Wheat said "The two maps were drawn by F.W. Egloffstein...the first...is one of his best." Rare in this form with the two additional geological maps in color wash. These only appear in the Senate issue. They are the same as the two "normal" maps that appear in the House and Senate issue, but they have colors overlaid to show geological formations. Report bound with blue cloth covered boards with title on spine. |
