Wheat's copy of the 1847 edition is essentially the same as the 1846 edition, this copy is later in the year because it adds many towns in Mexico (probably to reflect battles, etc.) and it adds two tables, of population and distances in Mexico, which are placed in the ocean below North America. Full and outline color map. Includes chronological and statistical view of the United States. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |

The map is surrounded by views of farmers and Indians, portrait of John Hancock in decorative cartouche is below the title, the Boston Tea Party is shown, seals of New England states in upper left corner, and the same whaling vignette is repeated five times. This is the "cheap" production for which this publisher is well known during the late 40's. The method of printing is hard to determine - it is either wood block, litho, or cerograph. Compare to 1846, '47 Ornamental Map by H. Phelps. This copy is the same as the Streeter 3872, but a slight variant of the Wheat Gold 38 (Changes in the Cincinnati, Boston and Buffalo addresses). Wheat suggests that the map is a cerograph or a wood cut - we believe it is a cerograph. This piece celebrates the U.S. victory over Mexico and shows graphically the growth of U.S. territory from coast to coast. Views of the Contemplated Oregon Railroad from New York to the Pacific Coast, Portraits of Generals Taylor and Scott, etc. A table of Distances in Mexico is in the lower right corner of the map. Rufus Blanchard's name appears in the lower left under the Great Temple. There was an edition of 1855 by Ensign, Bridgman and Fanning (see our copy and see Streeter 3892 for 1854, also by EB&F). With the wide (1.5 inch) ornamental border and printed on heavy paper. Similar to but an earlier version of the Upper or New California and Oregon portion of the Atwood and Ensigns & Thayer's Map of the United States, 1849. Closer to and derived from their Pictorial Map of the United States of 1847 (see Wheat). Also has a map of North and South America from an unknown source. Under the maps are two blocks of text, one titled "Important Directions to Persons Emigrating to California" and the other titled "Description of California or the new Gold Region." Another version of this map was published on thinner paper and with a 5/16 inch ornamental border (Wheat 85) (see our copy- the title is in different print). The geography of the west is pre-Fremont 1848 unlike the 1849 Map of the United States which incorporates Fremont 1848. This makes us think that the map may be 1848 - there is no date on the map and Wheat estimates the date from sources he does not mention (other than finding the thinner paper copy in a book published in 1849). This is the thin paper copy with smaller ornamental border and no publisher credit. Wheat believes it was folded into some copies of Farnham's "Life, Adventures, and Travels in California;" our copies of that book have the Haven map pasted in one (see our #3963) and this map pasted in the other (see our #5001). This copy shows signs of being folded. It was probably sold with the book and separately. The text is the same as the broadside issue but the title is in different type. Scarce. |

This is earlier than our 1849 Map of the United States (see #264) which uses the same base map. Here, San Francisco is named Yerba Buena (which name appeared only briefly on maps published in 1848-1849), the Gold Region has far fewer towns (no Sacramento City, Sutters City or Fremont), and the Humboldt River is not yet drawn in the Great Basin. The copyright date is still 1847. Wall map surrounded by drawings showing the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the landing of the pilgrims and numerous battles. A small inset map of Mexico and a chart showing the population of the United States are included. The map is in color by state or region. The gold region of California is shown in gold. Mounted on black rollers and backed with linen. |
