Ornamental Map Of The United States & Mexico. Map Of The United States And Mexico Including Oregon, Texas and the Californias. Entered ... 1848, by Ensigns & Thayer ... New York. Published by Ensign & Thayer, 50 Ann Street New York. And 12 Exchange St., Buffalo. Sowle & Ward, 43 Cornhill, Boston. Rufus Blanchard: Cincinatti. |

| Note |
Compare to 1846, '47 Ornamental Map by H. Phelps. This copy is the same as the Streeter 3872, but a slight variant of the Wheat Gold 38 (Changes in the Cincinnati, Boston and Buffalo addresses). Wheat suggests that the map is a cerograph or a wood cut - we believe it is a cerograph. This piece celebrates the U.S. victory over Mexico and shows graphically the growth of U.S. territory from coast to coast. Views of the Contemplated Oregon Railroad from New York to the Pacific Coast, Portraits of Generals Taylor and Scott, etc. A table of Distances in Mexico is in the lower right corner of the map. Rufus Blanchard's name appears in the lower left under the Great Temple. There was an edition of 1855 by Ensign, Bridgman and Fanning (see our copy and see Streeter 3892 for 1854, also by EB&F). Full color. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and washington, D.C. |

Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. See our 2878 and 3209 for related maps. Full color. Folded into red embossed cloth covers 14.5x9.5 with title "Map Of The United-States Canada, Mexico, Central America And The West India Islands" stamped in black. |

A wonderful broadside, with heights of mountains, lengths of rivers, female costumes, and much else. |

Compare to 1846, '47, and '48 issues. Derived from the 1848 edition by Ensigns and Thayer, this edition uses the same U.S. base map (cerograph) updated to show changes in the western U.S., and changing the map title to "Map of the United States and Mexico" (eliminating "Including Oregon, Texas and the Californias"). Portraits of Lafayette and Franklin flank Washington (replacing Gen. Taylor and Gen. Scott). "Distances in Mexico" is removed from the lower left of the map. The rest of the broadside is unchanged. Seven years after the Mexican War, the patriotic themes of expansion continue in this map. Full color map. Includes "Panoramic view from New York to the Pacific Ocean". Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C. |

Broadside map in full color, portraits, historical sketch. Copyright is by H. Phelps, 1847. This may be a later reissue by EB&F, which we would date at 1855 based on finding it with two other EB&F broadsides of 1855. This was probably issued to appeal to the desire of recent immigrants from Ireland for information and images of the home country. Relief shown pictorially and by hachures. |
