Rare U.S. edition of Arrowsmith's Globular World. Says "The whole engraved under the immediate superintendence of, corrected and improved by, Samuel Lewis, Geographer...Plan work by Harrison, Hooker, Seymour & Boyd. The writing by William Harrison." The dedication to Dalrymple that appears on the English edition is not present here, and the U.S. is somewhat redrawn, with Ohio, Indiana, Michigan (with a redrawn peninsula), Illinois, and Mississippi added. Cook's portrait remains, but in a different location with the cartouche completely redrawn. The balance of the map is almost identical to the English ed., with small exceptions such as labeling Bass Strait in New Holland (not on Eng. ed.). Compare to our 1808 English edition. |

Colored by county, engraved by J.V.N. Throop. 1826 on title. Shows the Farmington Canal extended to Northampton, Mass., which is further than the uncolored 1826 edition, so we presume it was updated at least a year later. Later Editions published to 1853. The quality of the engraving is extraordinary. Throop engraved Ohio for Lucas' 1823 General Atlas. Tooley lists an O.H. Throop of New York who engraved for Amos Lay (New York 1832) as well as for Asa Whitney, and a D.S. Throop who also engraved for Lay (U.S. 1832). Map is bordered in green silk , dissected in 24 sections, and folds with marbled end sheets into a blue marbled slip case 26x21. |

(Covers to) New Travelling and Commercial Map of the Canadas, From the Sault of St. Marie to the River Saguenay, And A Large Section Of The United States Of America, Compiled from the latest Surveys & most approved Authorities. Dedicated By Permission To Commodore Robert Barrie, C.B. &c. &c. &c. By his Obliged Obedient Humble Servant, David Taylor, R.N. March 1834. Engraved By S. Stiles & Co. New York. |
| List No |
4691A |
| Note |
Scarce map of Upper Canada and the Northeastern United States west to eastern Illinois. This is, for its period, one of the most detailed maps of the U.S. and Canadian border area that we have seen. Taylor lists his sources carefully, and, mysteriously, it appears that this map was his only production, other than an obscure map of the Ottawa river country (Winearls 584). We believe that this is the first large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - all of its predecessors, including the early maps by Smyth, Holland, and the Bouchettes, were engraved and printed in London. Uncolored. Map is in two sheets, each dissected into 30 sections. Folds into half leather marbled paper covered boards 17x12. |
