Although it looks like the Mitchell, particularly in the title and overall size, they are clearly different maps. Map is in two sheets, each dissected into 16 sections and edged in green cloth. Sheets have beautiful marbled paper end sheets, and fold in an elegant full red leather folio 39x27 embossed in gold with "Teesdale's Map Of The World" and a decorative border. No mention of the U.S. Exploring Expedition track (which the Mitchell shows). Full color by country. |

With 46 page "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map Of Texas, Oregon, and California With The Regions Adjoining;" the full color map is folded into stamped black leather covers 13.5x8 with "Texas, Oregon And California" in gilt. This was one of Mitchell's most popular and important pocket maps. Later editions were published in 1849, 1851, and 1852, as pocket maps and as insets to the large Reference and Distance Map of the United States. It was also issued separately as a wall map. This issue has Texas colored green, some copies have Texas colored brown (has the green changed over time?). The text has a catalogue for Mitchell's publications. Mitchell first issued this map as an inset to his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in the 1846 edition (see our copy). |

3rd edition. Martin shows 10 issues 1825-47. 1st edition was 1825 (see W.H. copy). The 1826 edition of this map (see our copy) was the base for the White, Gallaher & White "Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Mejico" of 1828, which was then copied by Disturnell in 1846 (see our copy). Originally, Tanner copied this map from the southwestern portion of his Map of North America. This 1846 edition has updated the western cartography to include Fremont's route and topography in California and the Rocky Mountains. Interestingly, Lake Tahoe is labeled Flag Lake, a name we have never seen before. The 1826 edition of this map established the more northerly boundary of New Mexico and Mexico that White Gallaher & White copied and was ultimately used by Disturnell in his map, and affected the treaty negotiations (see Martin). The first Disturnell edition, and the second Martin edition (after the 1828 White Gallaher and White first edition). Wheat calls this edition a "famous" map. This edition is distinguished by the absence of a trail line running directly from San Antonio to Austin, Texas, that appears on the third Martin edition. Compared to our seventh edition (see our # 2541), there are substantially fewer towns, roads, and physical features both in Mexico and the U.S. The two profiles in the Pacific and two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico of the 1847 edition are not present. The covers and paste down statistics are the same as our 1847 edition. The map was printed from the same plate as the 1828 White Gallaher and White edition, evidenced by the faint copyright notice in the lower right corner under the neat line, Disturnell made many updates to the 1828 edition, and its republication by him was occasioned by the outbreak of the Mexican War. White Gallaher and White copied and slightly enlarged Henry Tanner's 1826 Map of the United States of Mexico (see our #5176). Martin lists twenty three editions of Disturnell's map. A significant difference between the Disturnell map and the earlier editions by White Gallaher and White, and Tanner, is the moving of the boundary line between Alta and Baja California about 70 miles further north toward San Diego, which was then used as the boundary in the treaty to end the Mexican War. Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt. |

Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. The seventh edition known as the "Treaty Map." This map was "the official cartographic reference consulted in negotiating the peace treaty of February 2, 1848, which terminated the Mexican war..." (Martin). The first of seven issues in 1847, this is easily identifiable by having only two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico (later issues have four). The twelfth edition was also used as a treaty map. This copy folds into red cloth covers 15x10, with "Mexico" stamped in gold, and with "Statistics of the Republic of Mexico" pasted on the inside front cover. Signature of Cornelius S. On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. First edition, first state. First map to show the new Kansas and Nebraska, also shows the important Gadsden Purchase of the same year. This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state, the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state, Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second, Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first, Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. First edition of Pressler's revision of De Cordova's map, and first edition published by Colton. Shows Texas east of the 102nd meridian. First issued by De Cordova in 1849, with editions of 1850, 51, 53, 56, 57, 58, and 61 (Ristow and Rosenberg), and a late unlisted edition in 1867 (see our #4801). De Cordova employed Pressler to revise the map in 1855 and then sold the rights to Colton in the same year. The 1849 edition has only two copies located. Eberstadt called the 1849 issue "possibly the finest (Texas map) of the period." Colton changed the inset map from the oval showing all of Texas to the southwestern portion of Colton's U.S. atlas map. J.M. Atwood was the engraver of all editions. With a list of the Land districts, this map was useful for both land promoters and settlers. Colton published a reduced version of the map in his 1856 Atlas of the World. The full color map is folded into stamped dark maroon leather covers 16x10.5 with "J. De Cordova's Texas J.H. Colton & Co. New York." in gilt. |

This is Meyer's grandest production, a real tour de force that has fifty maps of the Americas including thirty three maps that are derived from the Tanner/Mitchell Universal atlas maps of the various U.S. States and Territories, Canada, and South America and are dated from 1844 to 1854 (with most dated 1844 or 1845). Many of the maps in this atlas have Philadelphia as a place of publication (along with several other cities) indicating that there may have been an arrangement with Tanner and/or Mitchell to copy the maps. The U.S. maps dated 1844-46 all appear to derive from a late 1830s edition of Tanner's Universal atlas. Those dated from 1850-54 derive from the Mitchell and Thomas Cowperthwait issues of the Universal atlas from 1850-54. Espenhorst lists a separate atlas (3.3.3) published in 1860 with these U.S. maps only, titled "Grosse und vollstandiger Auswanderungs-Atlas fur Nordamerika." The Iowa, Wisconsin, and Texas maps are not copied from the Universal atlas, but all the others are almost exact copies and it is strange that no credit is given to Tanner or Mitchell. Notwithstanding that, the copies are beautifully done and in some cases (the California map adds an inset of San Francisco Bay not on the Mitchell version) superior to the American originals. Wheat misses the Tanner/Mitchell derivation in the two maps he cites. The other maps in the atlas are all superbly engraved and the city maps have exquisite views -- all combining to make this the finest German atlas of the mid 19th century. Full and outline hand coloring. Maps are bound in half leather marbled boards with "Meyer's Grosser Hand-Atlas aller Theile der Erde." stamped on the spine in gilt. Scarce. |
