1st edition, 1st issue - "Tennassee Government." Many changes from the later 1808/1811 issue - the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi are drawn very preliminarily and inaccurately, very few roads are shown throughout, there is a long note in the lower left corner about the boundaries of Georgia, parts of Maine and Canada are blank or inaccurately drawn, and Georgia and Tennessee have much less detail. Only the title sheet that shows the Carolinas and Virginia is about the same, except for fewer roads. As geographical knowledge increased about the parts north and west, Arrowsmith filled in this map. Outline color by state. In two sheets, each dissected into 16 sections and backed with linen. Folds into original tan marbled slip case 32x19 with a paste down label reading "North America. Date 1796" in ms, and "Sold by Wm. Allen 32 Dame Strt." printed in black ink. |

Roads colored in red ink. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. "Oregon" and "Upper or New California" in bold type, all areas shown in full color. General map of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and southern Pennsylvania showing cities and towns, roads, rivers, and relief by hachures. The map is overprinted in red to indicate railroads, the state name "West Virginia," and concentric circles centered on Richmond. Circles are at intervals of ten miles. A table of "Distances by Rail Roads" appears below the map title. Printed in colors, this map is probably the first U.S. Government map to show the new State of West Virginia. It is the first issue, published in July, 1863, just after West Virginia became a state on July 1, 1863. A second issue appeared in August, 1863. It was issued in substantially the same form in 1862 (Stephenson 465.45). Two other issues appeared in 1862 taken from this map: Map of Eastern Virginia and Map of Western Virginia. These were all popular maps, and Stephenson quotes the 1862 Coast Survey Annual Report as stating that 5,500 copies of the Map of Eastern Virginia alone were printed. Map is folded into textured brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Map of Virginia. W.S. & A. Martien, Philadelphia" in gilt. |

This scarce map shows a large band of central California from San Francisco Bay to Virginia City, Nevada. The showing of railroads is extensive with a separate table listing the engineers for each road. Topography is delineated in "crayon" style resulting in a very clear rendition of the Coast Range and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The mining camps are shown in great number and the overall detail is most impressive with a 4 miles to 1 inch scale. The Whitney Survey "Map of Central California" of 1873 is the only map that we know of that is comparable, yet it is eight years later, at a scale of 6 miles to 1 inch, and runs from west to east from San Francisco Bay, thus ending at Mono Lake and missing Lake Tahoe. This 1865 map runs from southwest to northeast, covering Lake Tahoe and extending to Pyramid Lake in Nevada. We have not seen any map of central California of this period that has the clarity and detail of this map. The map was copyrighted in 1865 by Hoffmann and Poett, about whom not much is known, except that Hoffmann made a "Topographical Map of Lake Tahoe..." in 1874 with Ferdinand Von Leicht (Graff 4497), it is not clear why Bielawski was not also listed on the copyright - perhaps because he was for many years surveyor for the U.S. General Land Office in San Francisco. Haiman states that Bielawski "was considered the most important person in the Land Office, that he personally surveyed and was generally recognized as the best authority on real property titles in the state." This copy is folded into untitled brown cloth covers stamped with a decorative border. |

The title of the map on the cover calls it "revised and enlarged" which means larger than the 1869 issue of the map (see our #4106) that showed the San Francisco Bay area and the country west to Sacramento, north to southern Lake County and south to Santa Cruz. This 1871 map extends west to Virginia City in Nevada, north to Fort Bragg and south to Santa Cruz, adding Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada gold country, Lake Tahoe, the Central Pacific Railroad completed over Donner Pass, and a large part of the Central Valley. At a scale of 12 miles to one inch, this map is twice the scale of the Bancroft/Knight Map of the Pacific States and the various spin off maps from it, thus showing more detail. Not listed by Vogdes or Wheat or in any references. Full color by county, map is folded into tan and red card board covers 16.5x11 printed with title "Bancroft's New Map Of Central California Revised And Enlarged. San Francisco: A.L. | Note |
This is perhaps the most extraordinary "county atlas" produced in the 19th century. Although it is a regional atlas in scope, covering both sides of the Ohio River from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati, in format it is county atlas with views, maps, and advertising directories of the local towns, cities, residences, and businesses along the river. There are 26 double page maps of the Ohio River, plus an index sheet, that are beautifully drawn and colored, as well as numerous maps of towns and cities on the river. The views frequently show the river and river boat traffic, the inside and outside of factories (an inside view of a glass blowing factory is amazing), and farms and residences. There are large fold out maps of Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. When taken all together, the effect is stunning. This atlas has become rare, with few copies surviving the "breaker's" temptation to cut it up. Rieger rates it "of extraordinary importance" and "extremely scarce." Bound in half leather dark brown cloth covered boards with "Illustrated Atlas Of The Upper Ohio River & Valley. From Pittsburgh Pa. To Cincinnati O. Titus, Simmons & Titus." stamped in gold. Full and outline color. |
