Full Title (Covers to) (Atlas de Geographie)
List No 4764A
Note DeLisle is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. His maps of America contain many innovations: discarding the fallacy of California as an island, first naming of Texas, first correct delineation of the Mississippi Valley, and first correct longitudes of America. Lloyd Brown states that DeLisle "undertook a complete reform of a system of geography that had been in force since the second century, and by the time he was twenty five he had very nearly accomplished his purpose." This copy is without title page, as issued. This is a relatively early edition of DeLisle's untitled atlas, published in Paris, with most of the maps having the "Quai de l'Horloge" imprint. All of the important maps of the Americas are present: Hemisphere Occidental, 1st issue 1724, Carte d'Amerique, 1st issue, 2nd state 1722, L'Amerique Septentrionale, 2nd issue 1700-1708, L'Amerique Meridionale, 3rd issue 1700-1708, Carte du Canada, 2nd issue 1703-1708, Carte de la Louisiane, 1st issue, 2nd state with New Orleans 1718, Carte du Mexique et de la Floride, 2nd issue 1703-1708, Carte de l'Isle de Saint Dominque, 1st issue 1725, Carte des Antilles, 1st issue 1717, Carte de la Terre Ferme du Peru, du Brazil, 2nd issue 1703-1708, and Carte du Paraguay du Chili, 2nd issue 1703-1708. Only two of the ninety four maps were issued after De l'Isle's death in 1826: "Carte du... Senegal... Ouvrage Posthume... Par... La Veuve Delisle 1826" and "Alexandri Magni Imperium...Opus Posthumum...1731." Early Paris editions (ie before Buache became publisher in 1732) of DeLisle's atlas with the full 94 maps are scarce - the LOC has none.

List No 5176.001
Note This is the second edition and the source of the White Gallaher and White map of Mexico issued in 1828, which was reissued by Disturnell in 1846. See our 1846 and 1847 issues of this Tanner map. This copy, although having several areas of loss, is significant in being the personal copy of Anthony Dey, one of the three principals of the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. It is not signed by Dey, but was found with many of his personal papers including documents relating to the Company (see our #5177). On the map, the lands owned by the Company are outlined in manuscript. The Company controled a vast area of land in southeastern Texas and was one of the earliest to offer lands for sale to colonists - several of its promotional materials are listed in Streeter Texas. Outline color by state. Map is folded into red leather covers 15x8.5 stamped with "Mexico." in gold.

List No 5024.001
Note This is the third edition of this scarce and important map of Texas. The first edition was issued in 1833 and the second edition in 1834. Streeter also lists an 1845 edition with the title changed to "The State of Texas." This copy was Streeter's copy with his notes on the inside front cover. The brown cloth covers 13.5x8 have "Burr's Map Of The State of Coha. & Texas Published By J.H. Colton & Co. New York" stamped in gilt. Full color. Streeter refers to this map as "the first large scale map of Texas... to show all of Texas to the Arkansas River" and states that "The Burr map, like the Austin Map, is one of the landmarks of Texas cartography..." The detail on the land grants is the best for its time. The 1833 issue shows a smaller Texas extending west to the 103rd meridian, whereas the 1834 and 1835 issues show a much expanded Texas extending west to about the 106th meridian and north to the Arkansas River. There is an inset map of Galveston Bay that Streeter refers to in his penciled notes on the inside cover as "1st detailed printed chart of Galveston Bay?" Above the inset map is a table of Distances. Yale has an 1835 edition that was issued earlier in the year than this copy - it does not show Milan's Grant in place of Beal's Grant and it does not list the four new towns that appear on our 1835 edition: Columbia, Electa, Mina and Augusta. Taliaferro 247 (illustrated) appears to be the same as Yale's copy.

Folded into black leather covers 12.5x7.5 with "Mitchell's Map Of Texas" and a decorative border stamped in gilt.
