| Note |
In addition to a two volume Italian translation of Raynal's History of North America, this book contains the first edition of Zatta's twelve sheet version of Mitchell's Map of North America, plus three other maps: Il Canada, Le Isole di Terra Nuova e Capo Breton, and La Baja D' Hudson. All of these maps appeared also in Zatta's Atlante Novissimo published from 1779-1785. A second edition of the Zatta/Mitchell maps was published in 1791 (see P651). Zatta's version of Mitchell is not an exact or complete copy: the Zatta maps do not cover the far western portions of Mitchell's map, many geographical changes are introduced, and Bermuda is depicted as well as Jamaica., neither of which are shown by Mitchell. A separate map covers Newfoundland and Cape Breton, on the same scale. Maps are hand painted with outline color. Covers are quarter leather light brown marbled paper covered boards with "Raynal. Storia Dell' America Settentrionale. 1778" stamped in gilt on the new leather spine. |

This is the only War of 1812 map in the Streeter sale. It covers the area of conflict along the U.S. and Canadian border, showing forts on the U.S. side and a great deal of detail on Canadian townships with a separate listing of towns in the various districts. The Karpinski copy adds Doolittle as engraver. The following year Kensett with Shelton put out a more general map of the U.S. showing vignettes of sea battles. Outline color. Not in Phillips. Updated from M. Carey's 1818 edition General Atlas. Many changes from the 1818 edition: new towns and many new roads. Robert DeSilver's name with the date of 1827 is printed below the map. DeSilver did an Atlas in 1822 using the Carey maps (William Mayer has the only copy we have ever seen, it is not mentioned anywhere else), which he acquired, we presume, from Carey when Carey retired in 1822 (Ristow). The six maps listed here we acquired together (Penn, Ohio, Maryland, Conn, Georgia, and Virginia), an additional map of Massachusetts is the same vintage, but folded into pocket map covers, we acquired it separately. All seven maps have the same water mark, the same outline color by county, and all were clearly issued as separates, only Pennsylvania and Virginia have the DeSilver imprint, and only these two and Georgia have substantial updates from the earlier Carey imprints. Perhaps in 1827 he decided to reissue his 1822 Carey maps as Pocket Maps and separate maps. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians: London and Philadelphia. |

The map of Oregon, California, Utah, New Mexico, etc. shows the gold regions in California and has an inset map of San Francisco Bay. There is also a striking separate map of San Francisco Bay titled "Bai San Francisco und Vereinigung des Sacramento mit dem San Joaquin." It has a lovely inset view of San Francisco and shows the routes by river to Sacramento and San Joaquin. Also issued under the title of "Kartenwerk zu dr. Karl Andree's Nord-Amerika," see P1231. Outline color. Bound in patterned paper covered boards with dark blue cloth spine with "Lange Atlas von Nord-amerika" stamped in gold. |

| Note |
This is a composite wall map incorporating the famous 1849 Ord Survey (Robinson's first Los Angeles map) and the Hancock and Hansen survey maps of 1853 and 1859. This is the first appearance of the manuscript Ord Survey as a printed map and is therefore of considerable importance. Bancroft and Thayer were real estate brokers active in the 1870's, Robinson dates the map as circa 1875 (the map is undated) based on their activities and the fact that the map "was a popular wall decoration for real estates offices in the 1870's and '80's." The Ord Survey is in the middle of the map with the Hancock and Hansen surveys surrounding it. The Ord Survey shows the original pueblo buildings, the farms around them, a small group of lots, water courses and hills. In contrast, the later Hancock and Hansen Surveys divide the lands outside the original town center into much larger rectangular lots of equal size, imposing a grid pattern on the earlier meandering lots that is both visually striking and a portent of the phenomenal growth of settlement to come. Separately, we acquired the covers for the pocket map version (without the pocket map) in which someone wrote in a contemporary hand "This cover contained the copy of the 1st map of the City of Los Angeles made in 1849 by Lt. Ord and is now framed and hanging in my office. I paid $5.00 for it." Covers are dark brown cloth 16x11 with "Published By Bancroft & Thayer, Real Estate Brokers, 21 Spring Street, And W.H.J. Brooks, Searcher of Records, Los Angeles, Cal." stamped in gilt. |

Scarce and early land sale map with a very early issue of Britton & Co.'s "Map of the City of San Francisco" and below it on the same sheet a larger "Map of the Beideman Tract..." Beideman owned several large parcels of land in the emerging areas of the city and this tract was one of the earliest to be sold in the newly annexed Western Addition. The Britton & Co. Map of San Francisco is the earliest issue that we have seen, followed by several issues in 1863 to 1867 by Gensoul and the San Francisco Municipal Reports and the San Francisco Directory (see our copies under Gensoul). The Norris catalog lists an 1859 Map of Hayes Tract also by M. Hoadley with lots to be sold at auction by H.A. Cobb, but the San Francisco map is not printed above the Hayes Tract map. One of the earliest San Francisco land sales maps. Covers area bounded by Laguna, Bush, Larkin and McAllister streets. Casastral map. |

2nd edition. Wheat: "the first 'indigenous' (Colorado) map of importance...a truly imposing map, a credit to all who had a hand in it..." Rare. The 1st edition was published in 1862 with a different title (Map of the Colorado Territory, Embracing the Central Gold Region...) and coloring (it does not emphasize the system of parks) but the same topography and political delineation. This 1865 edition colors the parks in deep blue (they look like water) and the continental divide in bright red and yellow. Ellis lists this map under Monk, has the copyright which was issued in 1862 (when he published the first edition). Streeter mentions that the 1862 edition was the first separate map of Colorado and that it also appeared on a smaller scale (18 miles/inch) as an inset in the huge Pratt and Buell "Map of the Gold Regions in...Colorado Territory" of 1862. Wheat mentions and Phillips lists an 1866 issue of the 1862 map, with J.H. Colton as the publisher. To further complicate matters, our copy of the 1865 edition has covers 16x12 with a printed blue label saying "Monk's Map of Colorado Territory" (barely legible) and a paste down advertisement for "J.H. Colton's Geographical Establishment" on the inside front cover. So Colton was distributing the 1865 edition and then took over publishing the map in 1866. Gilpin wrote "The Central Gold Region" in 1860 with six maps, republished in 1873 with additions and titled "Mission of the American People," which had a map showing the system of parks in manner similar to this map. |

For some reason Haskell and Stokes date this map 1864 although it was copyrighted by Viele in 1865. Removed from the Report of the Council of Hygiene (see our copy). The map shows all the original water courses of Manhattan Island, with the street grid superimposed on top. Also, three different kinds of land are shown: Marsh, Made Land, and Meadow. Sewer lines are indicated. A very beautiful full color map occasioned by a not so beautiful subject. In 1874 Viele reissued the map in larger format as the Topographical Atlas of the City of New York (see our copy). This map was also published as a separate pocket map, in covers. |

This map expands the coverage of the large Pacific States Map to include New Mexico, Colorado, most of Dakota and all of Montana. However, because of its relatively small size, there is much less detail shown. This same map appears in two parts in Clarke's New School Geography (see our copy) also published by Bancroft in 1866. In fact, we believe that the map was made primarily for the school geography (hence the simplification) and secondarily as a separate map. Wheat trashes the map: "we are surprised that Knight should have a hand in so inferior a job...No getting away from it, we must point the finger of shame at Knight for this map." The simplification is understandable for a school map, but showing the Green River entering the Colorado in Arizona is inexcusable at this date (especially for a school atlas!). Curiously, the companion Outline Map of the Pacific States in four sheets which accompanied the Clarke School Geography does show the Green and Colorado correctly. Notwithstanding its faults, the map is quite attractive, and, for some reason, scarce. With an excellent catalog of Bancroft's maps on the inside cover. Full color by county, and folded into stamped light brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Bancroft's Map Of The Rocky Mountain States, And The Pacific Coast." in gold. Relief shown by hachures. |

South 2 sheets of 4, top 2 sheets never issued, thus complete. Two unmounted sheets on heavy paper. Never folded. Hoffmann was the principal topographer. Wheat says the Northwest sheet was issued, does not mention the northeast being issued. WH says the two northern sheets were issued with areas left unsurveyed, he doubts that they were ever mounted on linen and colored. So the bottom two in this issue can be considered "complete". Vogdes lists the date as 1872 (and elsewhere as 1873!). We think 1873 is correct. Vogdes says sheet II, northeast sheet, was issued in 1872, he also dates sheet III and IV as 1872, and sheet III as having an 1871 issue (Fitch had a copy of this 1871 sheet III issue on thin paper, folded into covers, Cat. 41). There is a note on the map reading "The portion of Nevada included between the parallels ... taken from the work of the 40th Parallel Survey in charge of Clarence King, by permission of Genl. A.A. Humphreys, Chief of Engineers." Outline color by county. |
