Nurnberg, U. 1719.
List No 4385A
Note First (and only?) ed.. One of the earliest school atlases to use a system of letters on blank maps that are coded to a separate key list. This method was based on a teaching system formulated by Johann Hubner (1668-1731) and adapted by Homann. Four celestial maps illustrate the systems of Ptolemy, Tycho Brahe, Copernicus, and Descartes. Fourteen keyed maps show the countries and continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. California is shown as an island on the Americas map, and listed under islands in the key. Homann published an Atlas Scholasticus in 1732 (Phillips 577) which was also a collaboration with Hubner. Scarce. Maps are in full color, and atlas is bound in untitled red marbled paper covered boards with a vellum spine.

Note This is an unusually thorough teaching atlas for the period: each map has marginal text on both sides which explains the function of the map -- topographical, historical, political, etc. Because of its comprehensiveness, this atlas must have been used by advanced students of geography. Editions were published in 1767, 1780, 1787, 1791 and 1793. Clouet also published a set of wall maps of the continents between 1776 and 1793. Full color. Williams "A new general atlas" of 1832 and finally the Andrus and Judd 1833 "New general atlas." All have the U.S. map engraved by J.G. Melish, son of John Melish (see Ristow, Am. Maps and Mapmakers) and the other thirteen maps that appear first in this 1820 School Atlas. Maps in outline color. Cover title. Publisher's advertisement on back cover.

Note Maps say "Engraved for Woodbridge's Rudiments of Geography." Earliest Woodbridge atlas we have seen. The World in Hemispheres map does not show Palmer's land off South America. The title says "Larger Atlas" while the maps mention "Rudiments" so the use of this book is transitional - it has the same group of maps as Rudiments of Geography, which was published first in 1821. The advertisement in the back of the book clarifies things: "The following atlas was originally prepared to accompany the 'Rudiments of Geography'...The whole have been revised, and some additions made, to adapt them to a work on the same general plan with the "Rudiments," which is now preparing for the higher classes of schools." Thus this book is the first edition of Woodbridge's Modern Atlas, which did not come out in final form until late 1824 (that is when the text is copyrighted)-and this book may have served as Woodbridge's more "advanced" atlas until late 1824 when the Modern Atlas was first issued. Maps are hand painted with outline color or are without color. Covers are marbled paper covered cardboard 25x16 with a paper label printed with the above title in black.
