| Full Title |
(Covers to) Atlas minor: or a new and curious set of sixty-two maps, in which are shewn all the empires, kingdoms, countries, states, in all the known parts of the earth, with their bounds, divisions, chief cities & towns, the whole composed & laid down agreable to modern history. By Herman Moll, Geographer. (3rd ed.) London, Printed for Thos. Bowles in St. Pauls Church Yard & John Bowles at the Black Horse in Cornhill (1736?) |
| List No |
5580A |
| Note |
Contains 62 hand col. double-page engraved maps (10 folding). Contemporary ink inscription on front blank endpaper. Newer full polished calf with original gilt-lettered red leather label. A few minor repairs. The Atlas Minor was first published in 1729 and reprinted in 1732. This ed. has new engraved title-page with contents and revised maps. The maps in the third ed. are similar to those of the 2nd, except that a number of the American maps contain added place names. Like most of Moll's works, the majority of the maps are undated, although the maps of Great Tartary (no. 32) and "The West Part of Barbary" (no. 41) are dated 1732. The deciding factor which makes this copy the 3rd. ed. is map no. 13 (Germany) which carries the added legend, "Lorrain was ceded to France A.D. 1736 ..." Includes 29 maps of Europe, 10 of Asia, 5 of Africa and 18 of the Americas, including the double-hemisphere world map (no. 1) and the map of America (no. 45) that show California as an island. The Rumsey Collection copy includes 17 extra inserted, uncolored, undated maps (13 folding, 2 manuscript), 7 of which deal with the West Coast of Africa, and 2 of which are manuscript maps of the harbors at Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, the mouth of the Amazon River and Straits of Magellan, all with captions and place names in French, 3 others are of Upper and Lower Canada. The 17 maps appear to have been taken from several later 18th century sources, and were probably extracted from Kitchen's Pocket Atlas, Child's Universal Traveller, the English ed. of Du Halde's Description of China, and other works. A folded world map shows George Anson's tract on his voyage of circumnavigation in 1740-1744, and is probably from one of the numerous eds. of his Voyage. Includes folded descriptions from John Howell Books and the Argonaut Book Shop. |

1st edition. Maps by F. Shallus & W. Harrison. The second American road book, after Colles. The maps are better engraved than Colles, in a style closer to the English road books of John Cary (see our 1790 copy). Descriptive text precedes the maps, describing the routes and places of interest. Smither engraved one map, I. Draper, two. The rest by Harrison & Shallus. See "New Jersey Road Maps" by Howard Rice. A second edition appeared in 1804, same maps, text rewritten. Full leather covers with no title on cover or spine. |

Notwithstanding the title, the index calls for 52 maps and only 52 are included. An earlier edition was published in 1814 (Yale) by Carey with Johnson and Warner, with the same title page as this 1816 edition and with 58 maps (according to Yale's catalog - not seen by us). An 1818 edition was published with 52 maps in the title and index. Yale's copy of the 1816 edition lists 52 maps in the title and index. So this title may be an uncorrected state. The maps in this atlas result from a collaboration between Carey and Warner, using maps from their prior publications, unchanged: maps 1-4, 30-49, and 52 are from the 1809 edition of Guthrie's Geographical Grammar, Philadelphia, by Johnson and Warner (our 0316.000), maps 5-8 are from the 1812 (late) edition of Brooke's Gazetteer, Philadelphia, Johnson and Warner (our 3807.000), maps 9-29 are from the 1814 edition of Carey's American Pocket Atlas, Philadelphia, Mathew Carey (our 2276.000), maps 50 and 51 (Turkey in Asia and Islands of the East Indies) are from an unknown American source and are copies of Wilkinson maps. Carey's maps are of separate states of the United States while Warner's maps cover the general American maps (including 5-8, which are relatively scarce general maps of Eastern States, Middle and Western States, Southern States, and North Western Territories) and maps of the rest of the World. In 1802 and 1810 Carey published Carey's Minor American Atlas (P11022, 11023) which was about the same size as this atlas, with only 19 and 20, respectively, American maps - essentially the American Pocket Atlas with maps bound unfolded and without text. He took this format and enlarged it to a world atlas by using Warner's maps. This was probably published in a small edition and was an attempt to serve the market with a cheaper and smaller version of the folio General Atlas. This atlas is not listed in any of the references, we am aware of only four copies (Baskes, Yale (2), and this one) although there may |

First edition of Tanner's guide. In pocket map form, with the map and no text, as issued. Ristow says the first edition was 1834, and while that was the first issue of the enlarged guide with text, this 1825 map is from the same plate as the 1834 map and thus should be seen as the first edition of the guide. The entire lower right corner of the map is taken up with lists of "Steam Boat Routes Throughout the United States," which are keyed to letters in the map margins. In the 1834 and later editions, these lists are replaced with inset maps of U.S. cities, and the lists are given, along with added stage and railroad routes, in the body of the text. Outline color by state. In red leather covers, 13x8, gilt stamped "Traveller's Guide Through The U. States." |

This is the second edition and the source of the White Gallaher and White map of Mexico issued in 1828, which was reissued by Disturnell in 1846. See our 1846 and 1847 issues of this Tanner map. This copy, although having several areas of loss, is significant in being the personal copy of Anthony Dey, one of the three principals of the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. It is not signed by Dey, but was found with many of his personal papers including documents relating to the Company (see our #5177). On the map, the lands owned by the Company are outlined in manuscript. The Company controled a vast area of land in southeastern Texas and was one of the earliest to offer lands for sale to colonists - several of its promotional materials are listed in Streeter Texas. Outline color by state. Map is folded into red leather covers 15x8.5 stamped with "Mexico." in gold. |

Updated from M. Carey's 1818 edition General Atlas. Many changes from the 1818 edition: new towns and many new roads. Robert DeSilver's name with the date of 1827 is printed below the map. DeSilver did an Atlas in 1822 using the Carey maps (William Mayer has the only copy we have ever seen, it is not mentioned anywhere else), which he acquired, we presume, from Carey when Carey retired in 1822 (Ristow). The six maps listed here we acquired together (Penn, Ohio, Maryland, Conn, Georgia, and Virginia), an additional map of Massachusetts is the same vintage, but folded into pocket map covers, we acquired it separately. All seven maps have the same water mark, the same outline color by county, and all were clearly issued as separates, only Pennsylvania and Virginia have the DeSilver imprint, and only these two and Georgia have substantial updates from the earlier Carey imprints. Perhaps in 1827 he decided to reissue his 1822 Carey maps as Pocket Maps and separate maps. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians: London and Philadelphia. |

This is the American Atlas map of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, in transition to becoming the later more full blown canal map of 1830 (see our #3061). Several new canals are shown that do not appear on the atlas map of 1825: the Ohio Canal, Pennsylvania Canal, Union Canal, Hudson & Delaware Canal, completed and contemplated canals are shown in the Explanation, for the first time. Tanner was very interested in showing the growth of "internal improvements" in the states and the expansion of the canals of Pennsylvania in the period from 1825 to 1845 was shown progressively on a series of his maps (see also our #3942, 4551, and 4862 (1833 issue of the American Atlas with the Pennsylvania Canal map dated 1833). Map has outline color by county, and is folded into untitled red leather covers 15x8.5 with a border pattern stamped in gilt. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and greenwich. Relief shown by hachures. |
