Full Title (Covers to) Map Of The Northern Part of the State Of New York. Compiled from actual Survey By Amos Lay 1812. Entered ... 16th day of July 1812 by Amos Lay ... New-York.
List No 2293A
Note 2nd Lay map of N.Y. State, 1st was in 1801. In 1817 Lay extended the State map south to include New York City. This map extends only to the Pennsylvania border. Lay's 1801 map covers only the most northern parts of the state. For some reason, his 3 editions of the state map expand coverage from north to south ending with complete coverage in the 3rd edition. Phillips states that this map was engraved by Samuel Maverick in Newark, New Jersey, although nothing on our copy indicates this. Shows the Proposed Canal from Rome to the west, and shows Indian Reservations in yellow. Much information on land surveys and development, Military tracts, and evolving towns. Signature of Franklin Bache on inside cover. Bache was the great grandson of Benjamin Franklin, brother of A.D. Bache (head of the Coast Survey), and a noted teacher and scientist. Bache was in the War of 1812, and it is possible that this map was acquired for use therein, as it shows many of the areas of the conflict. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Outline color by county. Map folds into original marbled card covers 22x14, and into a new tan cloth folding case 23x15 with "Northern Part Of New York Amos Lay 1812" stamped in gold on the spine.

List No 0974.001
Note First edition of Tanner's guide. In pocket map form, with the map and no text, as issued. Ristow says the first edition was 1834, and while that was the first issue of the enlarged guide with text, this 1825 map is from the same plate as the 1834 map and thus should be seen as the first edition of the guide. The entire lower right corner of the map is taken up with lists of "Steam Boat Routes Throughout the United States," which are keyed to letters in the map margins. In the 1834 and later editions, these lists are replaced with inset maps of U.S. cities, and the lists are given, along with added stage and railroad routes, in the body of the text. Outline color by state. In red leather covers, 13x8, gilt stamped "Traveller's Guide Through The U. States."

Corrected and improved to 1826. Entered ... 7th day of June 1822, by John Melish ... Pennsylvania. Published by B. Tanner, Engraver, No. 74 South Eighth Street Philadelphia ... (illustration) Drawn by F. Kearny. Engraved by B. Tanner.
List No 2279A
Note This is called Melish's greatest work (Ristow). 1st ed. 1822. Melish died in 1822, eds. were published in 1824, 1826, and 1832 by the state (which explains B. Tanner listing as publisher instead of Melish). Morris did a revised ed. in 1849 (see our copy). Melish spent more than six years on this monumental project, which he hoped would serve as a model for other state map. The map was sponsored by the state and based on individual county surveys. Map has outline color by county, blue cloth edging, and is dissected into 40 sections. Folds into marbled end sheets which slips into a half leather marbled cover 35x21 with "Pennsylvania" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Tanner published this map in two forms: colored geologically to accompany Tanner's publication of Gerard Troost's Geological Survey of the Environs of Philadelphia, 1826, and, (eliminating "designed to illustrate the geological survey made by G. Troost" from the title and the geological coloring), as a map of Philadelphia and the adjacent country. Marcou says the Troost book and map are rare. This pocket map version is not in Phillips and is quite scarce. See Tanner 1829 Memoir catalogue, No. 50 and 51 for a listing of this map in both forms. Authors DeSilver, Robert
Full Title Pennsylvania. Philadelphia: Published by Robert DeSilver, 1827.
List No 2471.000
Note Updated from M. Carey's 1818 edition General Atlas. Many changes from the 1818 edition: new towns and many new roads. Robert DeSilver's name with the date of 1827 is printed below the map. DeSilver did an Atlas in 1822 using the Carey maps (William Mayer has the only copy we have ever seen, it is not mentioned anywhere else), which he acquired, we presume, from Carey when Carey retired in 1822 (Ristow). The six maps listed here we acquired together (Penn, Ohio, Maryland, Conn, Georgia, and Virginia), an additional map of Massachusetts is the same vintage, but folded into pocket map covers, we acquired it separately. All seven maps have the same water mark, the same outline color by county, and all were clearly issued as separates, only Pennsylvania and Virginia have the DeSilver imprint, and only these two and Georgia have substantial updates from the earlier Carey imprints. Perhaps in 1827 he decided to reissue his 1822 Carey maps as Pocket Maps and separate maps. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians: London and Philadelphia.

List No 5152.001
Note This is the American Atlas map of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, in transition to becoming the later more full blown canal map of 1830 (see our #3061). Several new canals are shown that do not appear on the atlas map of 1825: the Ohio Canal, Pennsylvania Canal, Union Canal, Hudson & Delaware Canal, completed and contemplated canals are shown in the Explanation, for the first time. Tanner was very interested in showing the growth of "internal improvements" in the states and the expansion of the canals of Pennsylvania in the period from 1825 to 1845 was shown progressively on a series of his maps (see also our #3942, 4551, and 4862 (1833 issue of the American Atlas with the Pennsylvania Canal map dated 1833). Map has outline color by county, and is folded into untitled red leather covers 15x8.5 with a border pattern stamped in gilt. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and greenwich. List No 3272.001
Note Two maps from Finley's General Atlas, both double page, within one brown leather cover 12.5x7.5 with "New York. & Pennsylvania." in gilt. These maps appear in our 1831 Finley General Atlas, in much later states and an earlier state of the New York map appears in the 1829 General Atlas. These pocket map editions are very early, with less detail on railroads and canals. The date of 1829 is estimated from an owner's signature and a stamp on the front cover. Finley's ad is pasted under the Pennsylvania map. Full color. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and Greenwich.
