DeLisle is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. His maps of America contain many innovations: discarding the fallacy of California as an island, first naming of Texas, first correct delineation of the Mississippi Valley, and first correct longitudes of America. Lloyd Brown states that DeLisle "undertook a complete reform of a system of geography that had been in force since the second century, and by the time he was twenty five he had very nearly accomplished his purpose." This copy is without title page, as issued. This is a relatively early edition of DeLisle's untitled atlas, published in Paris, with most of the maps having the "Quai de l'Horloge" imprint. All of the important maps of the Americas are present: Hemisphere Occidental, 1st issue 1724, Carte d'Amerique, 1st issue, 2nd state 1722, L'Amerique Septentrionale, 2nd issue 1700-1708, L'Amerique Meridionale, 3rd issue 1700-1708, Carte du Canada, 2nd issue 1703-1708, Carte de la Louisiane, 1st issue, 2nd state with New Orleans 1718, Carte du Mexique et de la Floride, 2nd issue 1703-1708, Carte de l'Isle de Saint Dominque, 1st issue 1725, Carte des Antilles, 1st issue 1717, Carte de la Terre Ferme du Peru, du Brazil, 2nd issue 1703-1708, and Carte du Paraguay du Chili, 2nd issue 1703-1708. Only two of the ninety four maps were issued after De l'Isle's death in 1826: "Carte du... Senegal... Ouvrage Posthume... Par... La Veuve Delisle 1826" and "Alexandri Magni Imperium...Opus Posthumum...1731." Early Paris editions (ie before Buache became publisher in 1732) of DeLisle's atlas with the full 94 maps are scarce - the LOC has none. |

This is a very unusual Lucas atlas - according to Foster, only two copies are known. The engraved colored title page shows a globe and books on a table, with pages open listing Lucas' products: "Drawing Materials of every kind, Paper of all sizes, Mathematical Instruments, Globes, Maps, and Atlases of every description suitable for Colleges and Schools constantly for sale by the Publisher." It has 31 of the Tanner and Harrison engraved maps of the continents and foreign countries that appeared in the (1815) and (1816) "New And Elegant General Atlas" (only Netherlands bears Lucas' imprint, engraved by Young & Delleker, and is basically the same as the map that appears in the 1823 "General Atlas Containing Distinct Maps..." ). Of the remaining 36 maps, 8 are of South America and the West Indies and are unchanged in the 1823 atlas, the other 28 maps are in many cases early states of the new U.S. maps that appear in the 1823 atlas and replace the Tanner engraved U.S. maps of 1815 and 1816 atlases. They all have Lucas' imprint and show various engravers, Welch, Young & Delker, Cone & Freeman, Kneass, and Hufty. Compared to the early 1823 atlas (our #4584), 16 of the 28 U.S. maps are earlier issues, with only one being a later issue - New Hampshire shows Merrimack County (1823) which does not appear on the early 1823 atlas map (this was probably drawn in anticipation of creation). Of particular note are: Louisiana, a double page map engraved by Harrison and "Reduced from W. Darby's Four Sheet Map" which is dated 1817 as does not show Alabama or Arkansas Territory, and a map of "North Western and Michigan Territories" which is the same base map as the 1823 "Michigan Ter." but shows a much smaller Michigan in a configuration that Paullin dates as 1819 with a large North Western Territory extending to the west. This is called Melish's greatest work (Ristow). 1st ed. 1822. Melish died in 1822, eds. were published in 1824, 1826, and 1832 by the state (which explains B. Tanner listing as publisher instead of Melish). Morris did a revised ed. in 1849 (see our copy). Melish spent more than six years on this monumental project, which he hoped would serve as a model for other state map. The map was sponsored by the state and based on individual county surveys. Map has outline color by county, blue cloth edging, and is dissected into 40 sections. Folds into marbled end sheets which slips into a half leather marbled cover 35x21 with "Pennsylvania" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

A rare guide and map (actually two maps on one sheet) that is a "cousin" of Mitchell's "Accompaniment to Mitchell's New Map of Texas, Oregon and California with The Regions Adjoining" also issued in 1846. Although Howes lists this under Mitchell, Mitchell's name is not on any part of the guide or map, Streeter lists it under Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., the publisher. There are 62 pages of text and several woodcut illustrations. The two full color maps are titled "Map of That Part of the West Coast of North America Comprising Oregon and Upper California" (26x20) and "Map of the State of Texas With Portions of the Adjoining Regions" (26x20) both printed on one sheet. These maps are earlier states of similar maps with slightly different titles that appear in Mitchell's School Atlas of 1846, maps #13 and #15. The School Atlas was published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. and the maps in it were copyrighted by Mitchell (this may be the reason Howes lists this "Geographical Description..." under Mitchell). The stamped leather covers 13.5x8 to both of these guides are the same with the exception that they are red in this copy. So I presume that Thomas, Cowperthwait issued this to compete with Mitchell's guide, yet somehow had Mitchell's cooperation in using the maps and the covers (assuming that Mitchell had some control over these). The two maps are impressive taken together and although smaller than Mitchell's "New Map of Texas, Oregon and California" they are very elegant. This guide is much rarer that Mitchell's guide and sold for two and one half times more at the Streeter sale. |
