3rd edition. Martin shows 10 issues 1825-47. 1st edition was 1825 (see W.H. copy). The 1826 edition of this map (see our copy) was the base for the White, Gallaher & White "Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Mejico" of 1828, which was then copied by Disturnell in 1846 (see our copy). Originally, Tanner copied this map from the southwestern portion of his Map of North America. This 1846 edition has updated the western cartography to include Fremont's route and topography in California and the Rocky Mountains. Interestingly, Lake Tahoe is labeled Flag Lake, a name we have never seen before. The 1826 edition of this map established the more northerly boundary of New Mexico and Mexico that White Gallaher & White copied and was ultimately used by Disturnell in his map, and affected the treaty negotiations (see Martin). See our 1847, fifth edition, #5158. Full color map, folded into dark brown cloth covers 15x9.5 with "Tanner's Travelling Map Of Mexico" stamped in gilt. |

Very rare map with no reference to it found in any of the normal bibliographies. The date is estimated. Proposed railway lines are shown to and from San Francisco to New Orleans and Napolian (sic). The map has been distorted severely with San Francisco much too far east. Napoleon, Arkansas, now defunct (why?), according to Baldwin and Thomas' Gazetteer of 1854, was the capital of Desha County. It was situated on the Mississippi at the mouth of the Arkansas. The population was about 1,000 people, and steamboats ran three times a week to Little Rock. Why it was placed so prominently on the map is unknown. Perhaps it was vying to be a terminus for the railroad. Texas is shown at a highly detailed level. The map is in color and folds into brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Map of Mexico Showing The Seat Of War" on the front cover in gilt. |

Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x10 with "Map Of The Seat Of War In Mexico." stamped in gilt. |

This edition adds an inset map of "Harbor of Vera Cruz," and "Dates of Battles" listing seven battles of the Mexican War beginning with Palo Alto May 8, 1846 and ending with Vera Cruz, March 22 to 27, 1847. Gen Kearny's route from Ft. Leavenworth to Santa Fe is shown and labeled, along with other routes of battle (unlabeled) running from Texas south to La Puebla, Mexico. This is the last edition published by Tanner, according to Martin. It is the best edition in terms of showing the events of the Mexican War. See our 1846, third edition, #2822. Folded into dark brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Tanner's Travelling Map of Mexico" stamped in gold. Full color. |

| Note |
Rare reissue of 1842 Greenleaf Universal Atlas. Many changes from the 1842 edition: Florida a State, Michigan entirely redrawn, Mexican War results on North American map, Mexico, Texas, Oregon changes to show 1846 boundary with Canada, Missionary stations listed on the Hemispheres, and many new railroads, counties, boundaries, etc. There are more changes between this edition and the 1842, than between the 1842 and Burr's 1836. Not in Karpinski, which is strange because Michigan is totally redrawn, not in Phillips or any other reference. There is also an 1849 edition (property of C.W.) that has similar maps except the Mexico map does not reflect the Mexican War boundary - probably he was running out of maps and this was at the bottom of the stack! Has the same Geography text in the rear, unchanged. The Wisconsin and Iowa map in this copy differs from an 1848 in Fitch Catalogue 48, #314, in having Mandan Dist. instead of Missouri Territory in the Fitch, making this copy probably later (the 1842 has Missouri Territory). Burr's name is no longer on the map of Illinois. Maps are in full color. Bound in half leather, floral patterned blue cloth covered boards with "The Universal Atlas" stamped in gold. Spine reads "Atlas". Marbled lining. |

With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Map is folded into dark blue cloth covers 13.5x8.5 with "Colton's Map Of The United States, Mexico &c. Shewing the Gold Region in California" printed in black on a tan paper label. |

Unlike 1849 ed., this shows California gold region named and shown in yellow. It also adds basin and range topography in Nevada including Carson and Walker lakes, and the Humboldt River (although in a manner different from the late 1850 and subsequent additions -- they probably drew the topographical changes in quickly, and then corrected them in later editions). Roads colored in red ink. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. "Oregon" and "Upper or New California" in bold type, all areas shown in full color. Shows Indian tribes and includes descriptive notes. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Washington. |

First edition. The cartography is elegant and understated. The eighteen maps and text comprise a general atlas of North America, with special emphasis on Texas and California. The Texas map shows in colored outline the lands granted to the Adelsverein and has the post road from Indianola to New Braunfels marked in red. The map of Oregon, California, Utah, New Mexico, etc. shows the gold regions in California and has an inset map of San Francisco Bay. There is also a striking separate map of San Francisco Bay titled "Bai San Francisco und Vereinigung des Sacramento mit dem San Joaquin." It has a lovely inset view of San Francisco and shows the routes by river to Sacramento and San Joaquin. Also issued under the title of "Kartenwerk zu dr. Karl Andree's Nord-Amerika," see P1231. First edition, first state. First map to show the new Kansas and Nebraska, also shows the important Gadsden Purchase of the same year. This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state, the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state, Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second, Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first, Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. Map is full color by state, folded into red cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover. |

| Note |
This was one of the first United States atlases to exclusively feature railroad lines, showing minimal topography (in this later edition more topographical features are added, earlier editions have fewer features shown ) and only showing towns on or next to the railroads lines. We find the maps most interesting and beautiful, although some might find them a bit spare. This copy was published late in 1874 and is the most complete edition. Contains maps of Washington, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Western Texas, etc. (similar to our early 1874 edition). The western United States maps are especially interesting. Full color. Bound in quarter leather dark brown and red cloth covered boards stamped with the title "Asher & Adams' new commercial and statistical alas and gazetteer of the United States." in gilt, the same title is blind stamped on the back cover. The remaining leather of the original spine reads "Asher & Adams' atlas and gazetteer of the U.S." Page numbering discontinuous. |
