List No 5825.001
Note The first atlas of Russia, published by the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg, expanding on the cartographic work done previously by Ivan K. Kirilov. Postnikov: "It brings together all the geographical discoveries of the early 18th century to give a fuller picture of the entire Empire than shown in the so-called Kirilov atlas. The maps were mostly based on instrumental surveys, geographical descriptions and maps compiled by the Petrine geologists and their successors." Normally the atlas includes 20 maps, this copy is special in adding an additional 17 maps and 2 text pages, including plans of St. Petersburg and Moscow (similar to Phillips 4060). Maps have titles in German, Latin, place names in Russian and Latin alphabet. Text of cartouches in Latin. Also issued in French and in Russian with title Atlas Russicus and Atlas Rossiiskoi. Atlas contains, 7 p. text with descriptions of the maps, and explanation of geographical names and symbols used in German, Russian, French and Latin, a general map of the Russian empire, 13 maps of European Russia at a uniform scale of 1:1,470,000 (35 versts to one inch), and 6 maps of Siberia at a uniform scale of 1:3,444,000 (82 versts to one inch). Bound in at end: 19 additional text and maps of Russian territories, plans from the Russo-Turkish war of 1736, engravings of military fortifications, maps of Ladoga Lake, environs of St. Petersburg, Kronstadt and the Gulf of Finland. Maps are colored in outline, with some maps in full color. Bound in reddish brown contemporary Russian binding in full calf with simple tooling. Atlas was printed in September 1745 in St. Petersburg in Russian, Latin, French and German, with engravers listed as Ellinger, Unversagt, Zubov and Rostovtsev.

List No 2293A
Note 2nd Lay map of N.Y. State, 1st was in 1801. In 1817 Lay extended the State map south to include New York City. This map extends only to the Pennsylvania border. Lay's 1801 map covers only the most northern parts of the state. For some reason, his 3 editions of the state map expand coverage from north to south ending with complete coverage in the 3rd edition. Phillips states that this map was engraved by Samuel Maverick in Newark, New Jersey, although nothing on our copy indicates this. Shows the Proposed Canal from Rome to the west, and shows Indian Reservations in yellow. Much information on land surveys and development, Military tracts, and evolving towns. Signature of Franklin Bache on inside cover. Bache was the great grandson of Benjamin Franklin, brother of A.D. Bache (head of the Coast Survey), and a noted teacher and scientist. Bache was in the War of 1812, and it is possible that this map was acquired for use therein, as it shows many of the areas of the conflict. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Outline color by county. Map folds into original marbled card covers 22x14, and into a new tan cloth folding case 23x15 with "Northern Part Of New York Amos Lay 1812" stamped in gold on the spine.

Note Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x10 with "Map Of The Seat Of War In Mexico." stamped in gilt.

List No 3236.001
Note Separate issue of Johnston's National Atlas Map of the United States. Rare variant issue of this map: it has an inset of Charleston Vicinity and Harbor that does not appear on any other issues of the maps, and most importantly, the southern slave states and northern free states are color coded (solid red for slave and outline red for free). Two printed notes relate to the boundaries of the slave states and the cotton growing regions. The three forts at the entrance to Charleston Harbor are underlined in red. Although the presence of Minnesota Territory would indicate a date no later than 1858 (when it became a state), this map has much Civil War information and, in typical British fashion, it is probably a bit out of date as to political information, so we date it at the beginning of the war, 1861. Not in Stephenson. Map is dissected into 18 sections and mounted on linen with dark purple cloth covers 18.5x12 of Edward Stanford's map establishment, labeled with "Map Of The United States. London: Edward Stanford, 6, Charing Cross, S.W."
