Note	Relief shown by hachures Prime meridian: Washington. Covers also parts of Oklahoma (Indian Territory) and Kansas. Derived from the Finley 1826 American Atlas map and issued originally by Mitchell in 1831, this edition has many changes topographically and a new border. The western part of the old Arkansas Territory is now called "Indian Territory Attached to Arkansas." There are many new counties in Missouri and Arkansas, and a table of steam boat routes appear in the lower right corner of the map. The detail in the surrounding states is now filled in. Full color, folded into red leather covers 13.5x8 with "Mitchell's Map of Missouri & Arkansas" and a decorative border in gilt.

Note	First edition, first state. First map to show the new Kansas and Nebraska, also shows the important Gadsden Purchase of the same year. This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state, the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state, Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second, Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first, Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. Map is full color by state, folded into red cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover.

Note	Streeter's copy with his notes in pencil: "An unusually good large scale map..." In green cloth covers with an interesting printed sheet on the inside cover dated June 15, 1856, promoting Whitman and Searl's land business. Three inset views. This was an early map for settlers and speculators. Inset map shows in detail the area around Ft. Riley, "The Geographical Centre of U.S. Possessions." The roads to California, Oregon, and Santa Fe are shown, with 13 Indian reservations taking up about a fifth of the area of the map. This is a very detailed map and very elegant. All the township and range lines completed to date are shown, making this a useful map for locating land claims. Map is folded into stamped green cloth covers 16x10 with "Township Map Of Eastern Kansas" in gold. Indian reservations are indicated by color.

The main map is mostly unchanged, with only a few railroad routes added. The addition of the detailed county map inset was probably due to the "bleeding Kansas" troubles of 1856. Note	This is the third reissue of the 1859 Gunn map of Kansas, which was originally issued with a Handbook showing routes to the Mines, etc. The 1859 edition was by Gunn only, Mitchell was added to the 1861 and all subsequent editions (1862, 64, 65, 66, and 67). The 1859 edition is very rare (Howes "d"), and the later editions of the map only are scarce (not in Heaston's list or Phillips). Karrow lists all the editions except the 1867 (see our copy). The map is of eastern Kansas west to the 98th meridian, with an inset of the "Routes from the Missouri River to the Kansas Gold Mines." This inset does not show Colorado, even though it was formed in 1860. There is a list of the Population of Kansas Counties, and a vignette of an Indian. Mitchell issued his own Sectional Map of Kansas in 1859 (Karrow 13-0585). There is an advertisement for Mitchell's Law practice and Land Agency on the inside of the map cover. Border color by county. Covers are a dark brown cloth 16x11 with "Gunn & Mitchell's New Map Of Kansas And The Gold Mines" stamped in gilt.

Note	Changes from the 1864 edition (see our #2928) include substantial additions in northern Nevada (Williamson expedition to Silver City in 1865 provided information used in this map), the extension of southern Nevada border into Arizona, a full delineation of the Black Hills in Dakota, the Central Pacific completed to Donner Pass and the Union Pacific completed to just east of "Cheyenne's Pass," and many additional counties, principally in Nebraska and Kansas. A vine border is added, and Colton's two sons are now the publishers. Full color by county. Folded into stamped dark brown cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Colton's Map Of The States & Territories From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean, &c., &c. G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co." in gilt. Everything about this map is different from Cram's later productions: it is his first year of operation, at 134 Lake Street, and the style of the cover, the map and the cartouche all have an "early" and unsophisticated look. Charles Shober is listed as Lithographer. Cram also produced the Guide Map to Chicago in 1868 (see our copy). Surviving pre fire maps by Cram are rare. Karrow shows 1869 maps for Missouri, Missouri and Kansas together, and Illinois, (all engraved by Pfeiffer, not Shober), but he shows no 1868 maps other than this Iowa and the Chicago maps. So this may be Cram's first state pocket map. It is copyright 1868. There is a view of a steam engine in the cartouche, this does not appear in later Cram maps. A 10 page index lists principal towns and counties, and gives a brief history of the state. Full color.
