Note	Notwithstanding the title, the index calls for 52 maps and only 52 are included. An earlier edition was published in 1814 (Yale) by Carey with Johnson and Warner, with the same title page as this 1816 edition and with 58 maps (according to Yale's catalog - not seen by us). An 1818 edition was published with 52 maps in the title and index. Yale's copy of the 1816 edition lists 52 maps in the title and index. So this title may be an uncorrected state. The maps in this atlas result from a collaboration between Carey and Warner, using maps from their prior publications, unchanged: maps 1-4, 30-49, and 52 are from the 1809 edition of Guthrie's Geographical Grammar, Philadelphia, by Johnson and Warner (our 0316.000), maps 5-8 are from the 1812 (late) edition of Brooke's Gazetteer, Philadelphia, Johnson and Warner (our 3807.000), maps 9-29 are from the 1814 edition of Carey's American Pocket Atlas, Philadelphia, Mathew Carey (our 2276.000), maps 50 and 51 (Turkey in Asia and Islands of the East Indies) are from an unknown American source and are copies of Wilkinson maps. Carey's maps are of separate states of the United States while Warner's maps cover the general American maps (including 5-8, which are relatively scarce general maps of Eastern States, Middle and Western States, Southern States, and North Western Territories) and maps of the rest of the World. In 1802 and 1810 Carey published Carey's Minor American Atlas (P11022, 11023) which was about the same size as this atlas, with only 19 and 20, respectively, American maps - essentially the American Pocket Atlas with maps bound unfolded and without text. He took this format and enlarged it to a world atlas by using Warner's maps. This was probably published in a small edition and was an attempt to serve the market with a cheaper and smaller version of the folio General Atlas. This atlas is not listed in any of the references, we am aware of only four copies (Baskes, Yale (2), and this one) although there may

Note	With eleven pages of text titled "Particulars of Routes, Distances, Fares, &c., to Accompany Colton's Map of California and the Gold Region. Collected from Official Documents." On the map there is a view of Pyramid Lake over the title, taken from the Fremont Report and inset maps of the Gold Region and South America, showing the route around Cape Horn. Ackerman did the Lithography for this map as well as the Map of California, Oregon, and Texas (see our #98). This is the second state of the map - the first appeared in Fayette Robinson's "California and its Gold Regions" issued earlier in 1849 (see our 5029). Streeter: "This appears to be the first Colton map showing the gold fields." The North American portion of the map is taken from the North American map inset to the huge Smith/Colton "Map of the United States and the Canadas..." first issued in 1844, this inset later became the Johnson Family Atlas North American map of 1860. The map and the view of Pyramid Lake also appears in a Disturnell/Colton map of North America issued in 1854 and earlier (see our 3507). Outline color. Note	A scarce railroad map of the eastern U.S. with an untitled inset map of North America. The style is a greatly simplified cartography showing railroads and canals. At least two other versions of this map appeared in 1856: one without the inset map (Karrow 1-1609), and one with a different inset map of the City of New York (Modelski 30). Dinsmore published the American Railway Guide in the 1850's which included a smaller railway map (see Modelski 10, 16). Richard Fisher wrote for both Colton and Johnson - Statistical Gazetteer, History of the Civil War, text in the Johnson Family Atlas and Colton's General Atlas, and others. In covers of J.G. Wells, who is also listed as publisher of Karrow 1-1610. Schonberg & Co. are listed as "Acrographers" which is a form of printing we have never seen before. Note	Colton took over the publishing of this map from Johnson in 1849. This is a later Colton issue. Many updates have been made in North America, the Arctic, Africa, and elsewhere. The journey of a Frenchman around the world in 1854 to 1857 is shown in manuscript with interesting notes on the travel. Two stickers on the outside of the case are French in origin, further indicating that the map was most likely purchased in Paris by the Frenchman at the end of his journey in 1857 - showing that Colton was selling his maps in Europe at that time and that his maps were competitive with European maps - at least our traveler thought so. See our 1847 first edition by Johnson. Full color map with silk edging, dissected into 20 sections. Folds into half leather brown cloth covered boards 38x41 with ties, titled "Colton's World. New-York" stamped in gilt.

Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. At the same time, Colton uses the Johnson 1863 map of the same area for the first time in his atlas, they must have had an agreement to switch maps. Full color. Note	First edition. This is the source of Colton's two General Atlas regional maps of the west, beginning with the 1864 atlas edition. This was the first map to show Montana (Wheat). Colton also issued in 1862 (W. Heckrotte copy) "Colton's Map of the Pacific States, California and Oregon...and British Columbia" which is from the same plate, earlier, and goes further north to include much of the Canadian west, but does not go as far east. All these maps derive from "Johnson's New Illustrated & Embellished County Map of the Republics of North America" (see our 1859 edition, #4012) which was first issued in 1856 (We assume this date because our copy says entered in 1856). This shows further that the relationship between Johnson and Colton included Colton using Johnson's maps, as well as Johnson using Colton's maps in Johnson's Family Atlas. Folded into dark green cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Colton's Map Of The States & Territories From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean. &c., &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt. Full color by county.
