4th edition, corrected to 1812, but dated 1804. This map was originally issued in 1804. This copy is dated 1804 but is corrected for political and topographical changes to 1812. It shows Louisiana and Missouri Territory, both of which were established in 1812. There has been extensive redrawing of the Mississippi River from the junction of the Ohio north to the Wyaconda River (probably due to the public surveys in southern Illinois, evidenced by the appearance of Township and Range lines there). Numerous other changes from the 1804 edition have been made throughout the map adding new counties, towns, roads, and changed physical features, primarily in the mid and western portions. So far I have been able to identify 1804, 1806, 1809, and 1812 editions, but it is likely that other editions will be discovered. The dates are estimates based on the political changes on the maps - all editions are dated 1804 on the title. Since it was a postal map and needed to be current as to towns, road and counties, it is probable that the map was updated every few years, until a new plate was made in 1819 by Harrison (Karpinski 59, Karrow 1-1466). The 1796 edition of this map (a different engraving) was changed four times in as many years (Wheat & Brun 127-130). The 1819 edition became the official post office map in 1825, used until 1829 (Ristow). All of the 1804 to 1812 editions were originally engraved by Francis Shallus of Philadelphia. With outline color. This copy in original condition, dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen, in original quarter leather marbled covers 27x20 with ties (remnants now) and title "Bradley's U. States" stamped in gild on the spine. |

The date is estimated, the only date on the map being 1812. Compared to the 1812 edition, Alabama Territory is added (1817) and Mississippi is a state (1817). Indiana Territory has been divided into Illinois and Indiana Territories, Missouri Territory appears with Louisiana as a state (1812), and there are many additions of towns and roads in the Midwest and Southeast. Chicago appears. The only major topographical changes we can find are in the Florida/Georgia border and coast line. The next issue of this map was the 1820 dated issue. Comparing this map to the Arrowsmith "additions to 1819" issue of the Map of the United States, one is impressed that Tardieu's map is far more up to date. Even though Tardieu began by copying the Arrowsmith map, his editions are consistently more current with the political and topographical changes of the times. Map is in four sheets, each dissected into 15 sections, and backed and edged in linen. Outline color by state. Sheets folds into original brown marbled slip case 22x15 embossed in gold with "Metz. Ecole Royale D'Artillerie" on the front and "Tardieu. Etats-Unis D'Amerique" on the spine. |

Comparison to Carey and Lea edition of 1822: most of the state maps are similar, except Georgia, Louisiana, New York adds information on Canadian coast of Lake Erie, U.S. map adds Long's information in the west and labels the Great American Desert (in the 1822 edition Carey & Lea used Long's information on Map 35, but only slightly on the U.S. map, as they explain in their note on the U.S. Map), Phillips points out some of the other differences -- N. America shows Russian America and a Map of Russian America reflects the treaty of 1825, Mexico is different, Guatemala is added, Guadeloupe and Martinique are substituted for the Windward and Leeward Islands Maps, maps of Guyana and Paraguay are added in S. America. In general, some of the United States maps are taken from the 1822 and early 1823 editions (for example, Illinois and Indiana are from the 1822/23) and some are from the later 1823/26 edition (the U.S. and Louisiana, for example). Scarce map of Upper Canada and the Northeastern United States west to eastern Illinois. This is, for its period, one of the most detailed maps of the U.S. and Canadian border area that we have seen. Taylor lists his sources carefully, and, mysteriously, it appears that this map was his only production, other than an obscure map of the Ottawa river country (Winearls 584). We believe that this is the first large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - all of its predecessors, including the early maps by Smyth, Holland, and the Bouchettes, were engraved and printed in London. The first separately published map of Iowa. Not in Phillips or any other references. Karrow locates a copy at the Iowa Historical Society and lists it as the first map of Iowa. Shows the eastern part of the territory, with the sections shown, and the early towns being settled. Judson also issued a smaller scale map of Iowa and Wisconsin in the same year (Karrow 8-0630), and several maps of parts of Wisconsin, and towns in Wisconsin and Michigan. He also issued maps of Iowa City and Bloomington in 1839. Outline color by county. Folded into red leather covers 14x9 with "Iowa." stamped in gilt. This is a very late edition of this map. The latest American Atlas edition we have seen is 1839. State one of the map is from 1823, state two is dated 1825 below the title, with an 1823 copyright statement at bottom left, state three has an 1833 date on both the map and the copyright, and this, state four, has an 1840 date on the map with an 1839 copyright statement at the bottom. In the upper right corner, the map has been extended beyond the neat line to show the developing areas of southern Wisconsin, around Mineral Point. Many new counties have been added in Missouri and Illinois. Proposed railroads are prominently displayed crisscrossing Illinois. Full color by county with the pocket map covers missing. |

Rare reissue of 1842 Greenleaf Universal Atlas. Many changes from the 1842 edition: Florida a State, Michigan entirely redrawn, Mexican War results on North American map, Mexico, Texas, Oregon changes to show 1846 boundary with Canada, Missionary stations listed on the Hemispheres, and many new railroads, counties, boundaries, etc. There are more changes between this edition and the 1842, than between the 1842 and Burr's 1836. Not in Karpinski, which is strange because Michigan is totally redrawn, not in Phillips or any other reference. There is also an 1849 edition (property of C.W.) that has similar maps except the Mexico map does not reflect the Mexican War boundary - probably he was running out of maps and this was at the bottom of the stack! Has the same Geography text in the rear, unchanged. The Wisconsin and Iowa map in this copy differs from an 1848 in Fitch Catalogue 48, #314, in having Mandan Dist. instead of Missouri Territory in the Fitch, making this copy probably later (the 1842 has Missouri Territory). Burr's name is no longer on the map of Illinois. Maps are in full color. Bound in half leather, floral patterned blue cloth covered boards with "The Universal Atlas" stamped in gold. Spine reads "Atlas". Marbled lining. |

In 1835 Peck and Messenger published their first map, a smaller map of "Illinois and part of the Wisconsin Territory." In 1836 they issued a much larger map, published by Colton, that is the ancestor of this 1852 map. Karrow shows issues of 1836, 1838, 1839, 1844, 1846, 1848, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1863, 1866, 1868, and 1869. The 1836 copyright was kept throughout, except for the 1853 issue, when the copyright was changed to 1853. In the unrecorded 1860 and 1867 issues (see our copies), the title adds Colton's name. It is odd that with so many issues of the map, it has become truly scarce. In its time, it was the best map of Illinois by far, and was probably the most popular. It is one of the only maps to show the vast extent of the prairies by graphic symbol. In addition to the two inset maps, there is an untitled profile of the Michigan Canal. There are columns of texts on the Public Lands, the Land Districts, Canals, and Population. In 1839 Peck issued with Colton the "Traveller's Directory For Illinois," with a slightly smaller map of the state (Karrow 4-1479). Peck was a Baptist Minister who traveled extensively in Illinois and adjoining states as a part of his work, and his keen sense of observation quickly made him an authority on the West. His Guide for Emigrants appeared in 1831, and his Gazetteer of Illinois in 1834. After his death in 1858, Colton continued to publish this map under Peck's name.
