Published as the Act Directs by A. Arrowsmith, Charles Street, Soho Square. Jany. 1st, 1796. Boundaries Communicated by Geo. Chalmers Esqr. ...
List No 3385A
Note 1st edition, 1st issue - "Tennassee Government." Many changes from the later 1808/1811 issue - the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi are drawn very preliminarily and inaccurately, very few roads are shown throughout, there is a long note in the lower left corner about the boundaries of Georgia, parts of Maine and Canada are blank or inaccurately drawn, and Georgia and Tennessee have much less detail. Only the title sheet that shows the Carolinas and Virginia is about the same, except for fewer roads. As geographical knowledge increased about the parts north and west, Arrowsmith filled in this map. Outline color by state. In two sheets, each dissected into 16 sections and backed with linen. Folds into original tan marbled slip case 32x19 with a paste down label reading "North America. Date 1796" in ms, and "Sold by Wm. Allen 32 Dame Strt." printed in black ink.

List No 4397A
Note The date is estimated, the only date on the map being 1812. Compared to the 1812 edition, Alabama Territory is added (1817) and Mississippi is a state (1817). Indiana Territory has been divided into Illinois and Indiana Territories, Missouri Territory appears with Louisiana as a state (1812), and there are many additions of towns and roads in the Midwest and Southeast. Chicago appears. The only major topographical changes we can find are in the Florida/Georgia border and coast line. The next issue of this map was the 1820 dated issue. Comparing this map to the Arrowsmith "additions to 1819" issue of the Map of the United States, one is impressed that Tardieu's map is far more up to date. Even though Tardieu began by copying the Arrowsmith map, his editions are consistently more current with the political and topographical changes of the times. Map is in four sheets, each dissected into 15 sections, and backed and edged in linen. Outline color by state. Sheets folds into original brown marbled slip case 22x15 embossed in gold with "Metz. Ecole Royale D'Artillerie" on the front and "Tardieu. Etats-Unis D'Amerique" on the spine.

Note From the Carey & Lea 1822 and 1823 American Atlas editions. Comparison to Carey and Lea edition of 1822: most of the state maps are similar, except Georgia, Louisiana, New York adds information on Canadian coast of Lake Erie, U.S. map adds Long's information in the west and labels the Great American Desert (in the 1822 edition Carey & Lea used Long's information on Map 35, but only slightly on the U.S. map, as they explain in their note on the U.S. Map), Phillips points out some of the other differences -- N. America shows Russian America and a Map of Russian America reflects the treaty of 1825, Mexico is different, Guatemala is added, Guadeloupe and Martinique are substituted for the Windward and Leeward Islands Maps, maps of Guyana and Paraguay are added in S. America. In general, some of the United States maps are taken from the 1822 and early 1823 editions (for example, Illinois and Indiana are from the 1822/23) and some are from the later 1823/26 edition (the U.S. and Louisiana, for example). Full color. Covers are new half leather mauve marbled paper covered boards with "Buchon. Atlas des Deux Ameriques" stamped on the spine in gold.

Separate Map
Authors DeSilver, Robert
Full Title Pennsylvania. Philadelphia: Published by Robert DeSilver, 1827.
List No 2471.000
Note Updated from M. Carey's 1818 edition General Atlas. Many changes from the 1818 edition: new towns and many new roads. Robert DeSilver's name with the date of 1827 is printed below the map. DeSilver did an Atlas in 1822 using the Carey maps (William Mayer has the only copy we have ever seen, it is not mentioned anywhere else), which he acquired, we presume, from Carey when Carey retired in 1822 (Ristow). The six maps listed here we acquired together (Penn, Ohio, Maryland, Conn, Georgia, and Virginia), an additional map of Massachusetts is the same vintage, but folded into pocket map covers, we acquired it separately. All seven maps have the same water mark, the same outline color by county, and all were clearly issued as separates, only Pennsylvania and Virginia have the DeSilver imprint, and only these two and Georgia have substantial updates from the earlier Carey imprints. Perhaps in 1827 he decided to reissue his 1822 Carey maps as Pocket Maps and separate maps. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians: London and Philadelphia.
