Note An unusual made up atlas of Blunt's charts in excellent condition, bound in quarter leather marbled paper covered boards for a French owner, with a small leather label on the spine: "Blunt. Ameriq. Septentrionale." The four charts on 10 sheets are all in first editions. Atlases of Blunt's charts are rare, with the Library of Congress atlas of 14 charts on 29 sheets the only other one we have seen.

Note Scarce map of Upper Canada and the Northeastern United States west to eastern Illinois. This is, for its period, one of the most detailed maps of the U.S. and Canadian border area that we have seen. Taylor lists his sources carefully, and, mysteriously, it appears that this map was his only production, other than an obscure map of the Ottawa river country (Winearls 584). We believe that this is the first large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - all of its predecessors, including the early maps by Smyth, Holland, and the Bouchettes, were engraved and printed in London. Uncolored. Map is in two sheets, each dissected into 30 sections. Folds into half leather marbled paper covered boards 17x12.

Another example of the Colton/Smith relationship - this Guide, the Western Guide, and the Large Map of the U.S. and the Canadas. This map is derived from the large wall map of the United States of America (see our #3960). The division between the two plates used to make this portion of the wall map is visible in Tenn. and N. Note First edition, first state. First map to show the new Kansas and Nebraska, also shows the important Gadsden Purchase of the same year. This state precedes all other copies we have seen - it is an early pull from the late 1854, early 1855 Colton Map of the United States of America... wall map plate (see our #2834, indicating it appeared in middle or late 1854 - see our 1855 wall map copy #2278 for the corrected topography), with the title different from the second 1854 state, in that the letters of Nebraska and Kansas have stars in them and are open as opposed to the black letters of the second state. Also, this first state has numerous areas that are "cleaned up" in the second state: the trail that crosses the two forks of the Colorado in southern Utah near the map edge has the word "Route" on it - this is removed in the second state, the vine border is reversed from the first to the second state, Louisiana is written straight across in the first - it curves down in the second, Bucksport and San Augustine are shown in Texas along the map southern edge in the second state and not in the first, Sacket's Well and Laguna in California in the inset map are given dots for their location in the second state but not in the first. There are other changes. Streeter shows a second edition in 1855, Heaston a third edition in 1856, but both copyrighted 1855. These have various route changes and place names added when compared to the 1854. A fourth edition appeared in 1857 (see Karrow 12-0361.2 and Graff 836) with the inset of the U.S. changed to Eastern Nebraska and Kansas. Map is full color by state, folded into red cloth covers 15x9 with "Nebraska And Kansas" stamped in gilt, advertisement for Colton on inside front cover.

Note Streeter's copy with his notes in pencil: "An unusually good large scale map..." In green cloth covers with an interesting printed sheet on the inside cover dated June 15, 1856, promoting Whitman and Searl's land business. Three inset views. This was an early map for settlers and speculators. Inset map shows in detail the area around Ft. Riley, "The Geographical Centre of U.S. Possessions." The roads to California, Oregon, and Santa Fe are shown, with 13 Indian reservations taking up about a fifth of the area of the map. This is a very detailed map and very elegant. All the township and range lines completed to date are shown, making this a useful map for locating land claims. Map is folded into stamped green cloth covers 16x10 with "Township Map Of Eastern Kansas" in gold. Indian reservations are indicated by color.

Note The contents calls for only one map but a second new map is added of the entire U.S., from the Mitchell Universal Atlas plate. The Drake1856 map adds J.L. Hazzard to the title and compared to the 1855 issue shows several new proposed railroads, particularly in the area west of the Missouri River (possibly the proposed Pacific Railroad routes). The Mitchell/Young U.S. map is slightly different from the same map in the 1856 Universal Atlas, in its showing of the Pacific Railroad routes. Bound in dark green leather covers with "Mitchell's New Traveler's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration stamped in gilt. The two insets in the first map are titled "Gold Region Of California" and "District Of Columbia". Both maps in outline color. Prime meridians are in Washington D.C. and Greenwich.

Note A scarce railroad map of the eastern U.S. with an untitled inset map of North America. The style is a greatly simplified cartography showing railroads and canals. At least two other versions of this map appeared in 1856: one without the inset map (Karrow 1-1609), and one with a different inset map of the City of New York (Modelski 30). Dinsmore published the American Railway Guide in the 1850's which included a smaller railway map (see Modelski 10, 16). Richard Fisher wrote for both Colton and Johnson - Statistical Gazetteer, History of the Civil War, text in the Johnson Family Atlas and Colton's General Atlas, and others. In covers of J.G. Wells, who is also listed as publisher of Karrow 1-1610. Schonberg & Co. are listed as "Acrographers" which is a form of printing we have never seen before. Map is full color by state, and folded into embossed brown cloth covers 16x10 with "New Rail Road Map Of The U. States & Canada J.G. Wells" and a decorative leaf design stamped in gilt.
