The map of Illinois has an inset map of Chicago that is one of the earlier maps of the city -- Graff lists the first Chicago map in 1834 and the second in 1835. The Travellers guide broadside is copyrighted in 1836 by H. Phelps and B.S. Squire. It gives population statistics, history and general information as well as advice for emigrants. Full color map by county, folded into stamped red leather covers 13x8 with "Squire's Map of Illinois" in gilt. Scarce. |

Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. This was compiled by J. H. Rees, undated, and is not listed in Karrow, other than an 1851 edition of somewhat different title (Karrow 4-1841). The Karrow listing of the Blanchard Chicago Map (4-0374) does not mention this Rees map on the verso, making this copy of the two maps perhaps unique. Karrow shows 1869 maps for Missouri, Missouri and Kansas together, and Illinois, (all engraved by Pfeiffer, not Shober), but he shows no 1868 maps other than this Iowa and the Chicago maps. So this may be Cram's first state pocket map. It is copyright 1868. There is a view of a steam engine in the cartouche, this does not appear in later Cram maps. A 10 page index lists principal towns and counties, and gives a brief history of the state. Full color.
