List No 1657A
Note The 1st ed., with a list of subscribers. Fordham lists eds. of 1808, 1811 (reissue of 1808, no maps changes other than the 1811 date appearing on some of the maps), 1819 (one third of the maps amended), 1824 (maps unchanged from 1819 except for the date), 1828 (same as 1824, except for date changes, with reissues in 1833, 1836 (Baskes), and 1844). This is a fine atlas, one of the best of its period, and a source for American mapmakers (Tanner directly copied the World and continental maps for his New American Atlas). Fordham: (The maps) "are finely engraved, with full details, showing especially the water-ways and roads, and hill-shading, and are usually coloured. The work is very clear and delicate and of a uniform character throughout." Maps are hand painted in outline color and bound in half leather brown boards with "Cary's Atlas. 1808" stamped in gilt on the new leather spine.

Atlas Map
Authors Carey, Mathew, Warner, Benjamin
Full Title (Covers to) A General Atlas, Being A Collection Of Maps Of The World And Quarters, Their Principal Empires, Kingdoms, &c. Containing Fifty Eight Maps And Charts. Philadelphia: Published By M. Carey, And B. Warner. 1816.
List No 4864.001
Note Notwithstanding the title, the index calls for 52 maps and only 52 are included. An earlier edition was published in 1814 (Yale) by Carey with Johnson and Warner, with the same title page as this 1816 edition and with 58 maps (according to Yale's catalog - not seen by us). An 1818 edition was published with 52 maps in the title and index. Yale's copy of the 1816 edition lists 52 maps in the title and index. So this title may be an uncorrected state. The maps in this atlas result from a collaboration between Carey and Warner, using maps from their prior publications, unchanged: maps 1-4, 30-49, and 52 are from the 1809 edition of Guthrie's Geographical Grammar, Philadelphia, by Johnson and Warner (our 0316.000), maps 5-8 are from the 1812 (late) edition of Brooke's Gazetteer, Philadelphia, Johnson and Warner (our 3807.000), maps 9-29 are from the 1814 edition of Carey's American Pocket Atlas, Philadelphia, Mathew Carey (our 2276.000), maps 50 and 51 (Turkey in Asia and Islands of the East Indies) are from an unknown American source and are copies of Wilkinson maps. Carey's maps are of separate states of the United States while Warner's maps cover the general American maps (including 5-8, which are relatively scarce general maps of Eastern States, Middle and Western States, Southern States, and North Western Territories) and maps of the rest of the World. In 1802 and 1810 Carey published Carey's Minor American Atlas (P11022, 11023) which was about the same size as this atlas, with only 19 and 20, respectively, American maps - essentially the American Pocket Atlas with maps bound unfolded and without text. He took this format and enlarged it to a world atlas by using Warner's maps. This was probably published in a small edition and was an attempt to serve the market with a cheaper and smaller version of the folio General Atlas. This atlas is not listed in any of the references, we am aware of only four copies (Baskes, Yale (2), and this one) although there may

Note Scarce and early land sale map with a very early issue of Britton & Co.'s "Map of the City of San Francisco" and below it on the same sheet a larger "Map of the Beideman Tract..." Beideman owned several large parcels of land in the emerging areas of the city and this tract was one of the earliest to be sold in the newly annexed Western Addition. The Britton & Co. Map of San Francisco is the earliest issue that we have seen, followed by several issues in 1863 to 1867 by Gensoul and the San Francisco Municipal Reports and the San Francisco Directory (see our copies under Gensoul). The Norris catalog lists an 1859 Map of Hayes Tract also by M. Hoadley with lots to be sold at auction by H.A. Cobb, but the San Francisco map is not printed above the Hayes Tract map. One of the earliest San Francisco land sales maps. Covers area bounded by Laguna, Bush, Larkin and McAllister streets. Casastral map.

List No 4332.001
Note This map expands the coverage of the large Pacific States Map to include New Mexico, Colorado, most of Dakota and all of Montana. However, because of its relatively small size, there is much less detail shown. This same map appears in two parts in Clarke's New School Geography (see our copy) also published by Bancroft in 1866. In fact, we believe that the map was made primarily for the school geography (hence the simplification) and secondarily as a separate map. Wheat trashes the map: "we are surprised that Knight should have a hand in so inferior a job...No getting away from it, we must point the finger of shame at Knight for this map." The simplification is understandable for a school map, but showing the Green River entering the Colorado in Arizona is inexcusable at this date (especially for a school atlas!). Curiously, the companion Outline Map of the Pacific States in four sheets which accompanied the Clarke School Geography does show the Green and Colorado correctly. Notwithstanding its faults, the map is quite attractive, and, for some reason, scarce. With an excellent catalog of Bancroft's maps on the inside cover. Full color by county, and folded into stamped light brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Bancroft's Map Of The Rocky Mountain States, And The Pacific Coast." in gold. Relief shown by hachures.

Full Title (Covers to) Rand, McNally & Co.'s new geological map of Colorado. Copyright, 1879, by Rand, McNally & Co.
List No 4788A
Note This is a very unusual map for Rand McNally to issue - geological maps were not common in their catalog and this may be the only one they published. It was probably the interest in mining that motivated publication and the inclusion of "Mineralogical References" in the map key. The main source for the geological formations was Hayden's General Geological Map of Colorado that appeared in his 1877 Atlas of Colorado. But Rand McNally's map has much more detail on towns and railroads than Hayden and is a much superior map in that respect. Ellis 82 is the 1880 edition, which was also issued without geological coloring as "Rand McNally & Co.'s New Sectional Map of Colorado." This map is in printed full color, folded into dark blue cloth covers 16.5x10 titled "Rand, McNally & Co's geological and mineralogical maps Of Colorado" in gold.

Pocket Map
Authors Rand McNally and Company
Full Title Rand, McNally & Co.'s new geological map of Colorado. Copyright, 1879, by Rand, McNally & Co.
List No 4788.001
Note This is a very unusual map for Rand McNally to issue - geological maps were not common in their catalog and this may be the only one they published.
