Scarce map with Drawings by Bruff. According to Tooley, Bruff did: State of Florida, 1846, this map, Tehuantepec maps, 1851, Seat of War in Virginia, 1861. In Phillips p410, this map and another smaller map also published by Disturnell are listed. From the Introduction to his travel diary, it is clear that Bruff drew for the Topographical Engineers and other government departments for over 50 years. Many of his products may not have his name on them - he is quoted in the introduction (page xxx) saying that he drew duplicates of the Fremont maps and plates for both houses of Congress. The four inset maps are titled: Plan of Monterey, Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the 8th and 9th May 1846, Tampico and its Environs, and Chart of the Bay of Vera Cruz. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x10 with "Map Of The Seat Of War In Mexico." stamped in gilt. |

Unlike 1849 ed., this shows California gold region named and shown in yellow. It also adds basin and range topography in Nevada including Carson and Walker lakes, and the Humboldt River (although in a manner different from the late 1850 and subsequent additions -- they probably drew the topographical changes in quickly, and then corrected them in later editions). Roads colored in red ink. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. "Oregon" and "Upper or New California" in bold type, all areas shown in full color. Shows Indian tribes and includes descriptive notes. Prime meridians: Greenwich and Washington. |

| Note |
This is the earliest issue of this map that we have seen, earlier than any listed in Phillips or Fitzgerald. Compared to our 1876 edition (see #5040) there is far less railroad development shown on the map and the railroads are not listed to the right of the Florida Peninsula, as they are on the 1876 issue. Julius Bien is credited as engraver and printer, which is removed on the 1876 edition. There is no copyright notice. Drew's map is probably the only pocket map of Florida published in Florida in the 19th century. Not much is known about Drew - he is listed on the map as "Bookseller & Stationer" in Jacksonville. Full color by county. Map is folded into stamped dark brown cloth covers 15x9.5 with "Drew's New Map Of Florida" in gilt. |

The copyright date is 1873, there was an 1874 edition, then this 1876 edition, and an 1877 edition. The first edition was probably 1870 (see our #5190). Fitzgerald lists Julius Bien as the engraver of the 1874 edition - his name is absent from this 1876 edition. A fine, scarce pocket map of Florida published in Jacksonville, Florida, and the only map in the Fitzgerald list and in Phillips Maps published by a Floridian in the 1800's. Several existing and proposed railroads are shown, and the map is generally thick with detail of emerging towns, roads, historic sites, etc. Map is folded into green cloth covers 15x10 with "Drew's Florida" stamped into an illustration of an armored arm stamped in gilt. |
