DeLisle is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. His maps of America contain many innovations: discarding the fallacy of California as an island, first naming of Texas, first correct delineation of the Mississippi Valley, and first correct longitudes of America. Lloyd Brown states that DeLisle "undertook a complete reform of a system of geography that had been in force since the second century, and by the time he was twenty five he had very nearly accomplished his purpose." This copy is without title page, as issued. This is a relatively early edition of DeLisle's untitled atlas, published in Paris, with most of the maps having the "Quai de l'Horloge" imprint. All of the important maps of the Americas are present: Hemisphere Occidental, 1st issue 1724, Carte d'Amerique, 1st issue, 2nd state 1722, L'Amerique Septentrionale, 2nd issue 1700-1708, L'Amerique Meridionale, 3rd issue 1700-1708, Carte du Canada, 2nd issue 1703-1708, Carte de la Louisiane, 1st issue, 2nd state with New Orleans 1718, Carte du Mexique et de la Floride, 2nd issue 1703-1708, Carte de l'Isle de Saint Dominque, 1st issue 1725, Carte des Antilles, 1st issue 1717, Carte de la Terre Ferme du Peru, du Brazil, 2nd issue 1703-1708, and Carte du Paraguay du Chili, 2nd issue 1703-1708. Only two of the ninety four maps were issued after De l'Isle's death in 1826: "Carte du... Senegal... Ouvrage Posthume... Par... La Veuve Delisle 1826" and "Alexandri Magni Imperium...Opus Posthumum...1731." Early Paris editions (ie before Buache became publisher in 1732) of DeLisle's atlas with the full 94 maps are scarce - the LOC has none. |

(Covers to) Atlas minor: or a new and curious set of sixty-two maps, in which are shewn all the empires, kingdoms, countries, states, in all the known parts of the earth, with their bounds, divisions, chief cities & towns, the whole composed & laid down agreable to modern history. By Herman Moll, Geographer. (3rd ed.) London, Printed for Thos. Bowles in St. Pauls Church Yard & John Bowles at the Black Horse in Cornhill (1736?) |

| Note |
Contains 62 hand col. double-page engraved maps (10 folding). Contemporary ink inscription on front blank endpaper. Newer full polished calf with original gilt-lettered red leather label. A few minor repairs. The Atlas Minor was first published in 1729 and reprinted in 1732. This ed. has new engraved title-page with contents and revised maps. The maps in the third ed. are similar to those of the 2nd, except that a number of the American maps contain added place names. Like most of Moll's works, the majority of the maps are undated, although the maps of Great Tartary (no. 32) and "The West Part of Barbary" (no. 41) are dated 1732. The deciding factor which makes this copy the 3rd. ed. is map no. 13 (Germany) which carries the added legend, "Lorrain was ceded to France A.D. 1736 ..." Includes 29 maps of Europe, 10 of Asia, 5 of Africa and 18 of the Americas, including the double-hemisphere world map (no. 1) and the map of America (no. 45) that show California as an island. The Rumsey Collection copy includes 17 extra inserted, uncolored, undated maps (13 folding, 2 manuscript), 7 of which deal with the West Coast of Africa, and 2 of which are manuscript maps of the harbors at Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, the mouth of the Amazon River and Straits of Magellan, all with captions and place names in French, 3 others are of Upper and Lower Canada. The 17 maps appear to have been taken from several later 18th century sources, and were probably extracted from Kitchen's Pocket Atlas, Child's Universal Traveller, the English ed. of Du Halde's Description of China, and other works. A folded world map shows George Anson's tract on his voyage of circumnavigation in 1740-1744, and is probably from one of the numerous eds. of his Voyage. Includes folded descriptions from John Howell Books and the Argonaut Book Shop. |

| Note |
This is a later edition of DeLisle's maps, including some maps by Sanson, Jaillot and others, first published by Covens and Mortier in 1730. It is bound with a geography text by Sanson. This issue did not included the abbreviated edition of Popple's map that appears in the P596 copy and the index does not call for it. The maps are beautifully done, following the original DeLisle plates closely. This copy does not have the plan of Carthagene called for in the index, and it does not appear to have been bound in originally (there is a ms line drawn through the index line referring to this map that may have been done at the time of issue). Koeman's C&M 6 is slightly different from our copy: it has 1733 on the title page and 1741 on the index (our copy has 1742 on the index and no date on the title page, also, C&M 6 lists 107 maps on the index - this one lists 108 maps with one crossed out (see above) - that map crossed out was published in 1741 or 42 and probably was not yet ready for inclusion. So our copy was unknown to Koeman or Phillips. Atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "DeLisle Atlas" stamped in gilt on the new spine. Maps are hand painted with outline color. |
