Note	With red cloth covers 14.5x9 stamped with gilt title reading "Thirty Three Miles Around The City Of New-York." and a small circular map of New York (later editions omit the map on the cover). First issued in 1846, when it was reengraved by Atwood from J.H. Eddy's "Map of the Country Thirty Miles round the City of New York" which was originally issued in 1811 (see our #3472). This is one of Colton's most attractive maps, showing New York and vicinity in circular format surrounded by a vine border with views of City Hall, New York and City Hall, Brooklyn. It was published in many editions for almost fifty years - our latest edition is 1891 (Haskell lists eight editions from 1846 to 1873 only). The early editions were engraved on copper plate (our 1853) and at some point before our 1865 edition the copper plate was transferred to lithographic stone and all subsequent editions were lithographed.

This was #2 in Bacon's London issue six map series of Colton maps depicting the areas of the Civil War. Note	This is the earliest map of the Pennsylvania Oil District that we have seen. It predates the 1865 maps by Beers, Colton and Plumb, Townsend and Dale, Hunt, and Howe (1866). It is large scale and shows excellent detail. Individual wells are shown, and operating wells are distinguished from wells being drilled. An extension flap is attached to the upper left corner of the map showing the East Branch of Oil Creek. Folded into dark green textured cloth covers 18.5x10 with "Map Of The Oil District" in gilt. Not in Streeter (unusual because Streeter has all the other important Oil maps) or any references. Scarce.

Note	Third edition. Shows Colona, Shoshone, Nevada. The maker of this map must have seen copies of Mitchell's 1859 New National Map - this has the same proposed territorial names that Mitchell used that year. This also has a line dividing the northern and southern states in the civil war. According to Phillips Maps, this was also No. 48 in the Atlas Universel for 1862. Map is dissected into 21 sections and mounted on tan linen with the book plate of Andriveau-Goujon. Covers are dark green cloth 23.5x14.5 with "Etats-Unis Et Mexique. Andriveau-Goujon. Rue Du Bac, 2I." stamped in gold on the front with the same embossed gold and green globe as the 1862 issue. The spine is stamped with "Etats-Unis" in gold. Map has full color by state.

Note	2nd edition. Wheat: "the first 'indigenous' (Colorado) map of importance...a truly imposing map, a credit to all who had a hand in it..." Rare. The 1st edition was published in 1862 with a different title (Map of the Colorado Territory, Embracing the Central Gold Region...) and coloring (it does not emphasize the system of parks) but the same topography and political delineation. This 1865 edition colors the parks in deep blue (they look like water) and the continental divide in bright red and yellow. Ellis lists this map under Monk, has the copyright which was issued in 1862 (when he published the first edition). Streeter mentions that the 1862 edition was the first separate map of Colorado and that it also appeared on a smaller scale (18 miles/inch) as an inset in the huge Pratt and Buell "Map of the Gold Regions in...Colorado Territory" of 1862. Wheat mentions and Phillips lists an 1866 issue of the 1862 map, with J.H. Colton as the publisher. To further complicate matters, our copy of the 1865 edition has covers 16x12 with a printed blue label saying "Monk's Map of Colorado Territory" (barely legible) and a paste down advertisement for "J.H. Colton's Geographical Establishment" on the inside front cover. So Colton was distributing the 1865 edition and then took over publishing the map in 1866. Gilpin wrote "The Central Gold Region" in 1860 with six maps, republished in 1873 with additions and titled "Mission of the American People," which had a map showing the system of parks in manner similar to this map.

Note	For some reason Haskell and Stokes date this map 1864 although it was copyrighted by Viele in 1865. Removed from the Report of the Council of Hygiene (see our copy). The map shows all the original water courses of Manhattan Island, with the street grid superimposed on top. Also, three different kinds of land are shown: Marsh, Made Land, and Meadow. Sewer lines are indicated. A very beautiful full color map occasioned by a not so beautiful subject. In 1874 Viele reissued the map in larger format as the Topographical Atlas of the City of New York (see our copy). This map was also published as a separate pocket map, in covers.

Note	Wheat: "In Arizona the year 1865 was made notable by the first great map of that Territory, the 'Official Map of the Territory of Arizona...by Richard Gird'...Gird's richly varied map concentrates upon Arizona and adjacent parts of California and Sonora..." Wheat also reprints a portion of Bancroft's description of Gird's life. Streeter lists the Hartley Map of Arizona as circa 1863 and hence earlier that the Gird, Wheat disagrees, listing Hartley as 1865 (as, he claims, the Library of Congress does also), thus making the Gird the more important map: "Except that it is overshadowed by Gird's great map, Hartley's production would receive more attention here." Gird's map is full of interesting detail and is also a beautiful graphic production. Full color by county. Note	The first Atlas of Peru, with wonderful maps, plans, thematic maps, views and statistical information. The atlas exudes the optimism of the period. In addition to the forty five maps and plans, there are twenty three views and scenes, including a very large fold out panorama of Paz Soldan's home city of Arequipa. This issue's title page is the same as Sabin's, the title of the copy listed in Phillips does not have the dedication to Castilla and has Fermin Didot Hermanos as the publisher - which is also the case with the copy owned and described by Michael Layman in TM C. Apparently there were two Spanish issues made in the same year in Paris, Durand also published a Paris edition in French in 1865. The contents of our copy and Layland's copy appear to be identical, so perhaps only the title pages were different. Nine of the Department maps in our copy are hand colored, with the rest uncolored (normally the Department maps are uncolored). Paz Soldan published a large six sheet Mapa del Peru in 1864 (see The Map Collector). Atlas is bound in half leather brown marbled paper covered boards with "Paz Soldan. Atlas Geografico Del Peru" stamped in gold on the spine. David Rumsey Collection copy lacks pl. LIV.

Note	This scarce map shows a large band of central California from San Francisco Bay to Virginia City, Nevada. The showing of railroads is extensive with a separate table listing the engineers for each road. Topography is delineated in "crayon" style resulting in a very clear rendition of the Coast Range and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The mining camps are shown in great number and the overall detail is most impressive with a 4 miles to 1 inch scale. The Whitney Survey "Map of Central California" of 1873 is the only map that we know of that is comparable, yet it is eight years later, at a scale of 6 miles to 1 inch, and runs from west to east from San Francisco Bay, thus ending at Mono Lake and missing Lake Tahoe. This 1865 map runs from southwest to northeast, covering Lake Tahoe and extending to Pyramid Lake in Nevada. We have not seen any map of central California of this period that has the clarity and detail of this map. The map was copyrighted in 1865 by Hoffmann and Poett, about whom not much is known, except that Hoffmann made a "Topographical Map of Lake Tahoe..." in 1874 with Ferdinand Von Leicht (Graff 4497), it is not clear why Bielawski was not also listed on the copyright - perhaps because he was for many years surveyor for the U.S. General Land Office in San Francisco. Haiman states that Bielawski "was considered the most important person in the Land Office, that he personally surveyed and was generally recognized as the best authority on real property titles in the state." This copy is folded into untitled brown cloth covers stamped with a decorative border.

Note	First edition, first issue. Streeter was unaware of the two issues of this map and we cannot find any other mention of them. Streeter's comments on the map ("This Colton map is almost certainly earlier than the Hunt or the Townsend & Dale maps, both also of 1865, and it is best for giving a general view of the oil region as first opened up and first developed") indicate that he probably had this first issue of 1865 and had not seen the second issue (see our # 4529) which shows more development. The nine maps are all double page and full of interesting information. They were lithographed by Grafton T. Brown, the first black lithographer in San Francisco. Rare. Book bound with cloth covers and "Guide Book of the Pacific" on the spine.
