Woolworth Colton as the cartographer, publisher, copyright holder, and has ads for "G. Woolworth Colton, Geographer to the late Firm of J.H. Colton & Co..." on the inside cover paste down. Apparently the J.H. Colton firm ceased to exist briefly in 1862 and G. Woolworth Colton decided to start his own business under his own name. This curious lapse in the Colton firm is probably related to their arrangements with A.J. Johnson regarding Johnson's Family Atlas. At some point later in 1862, J.H. Colton decided to resuscitate his firm. Folded into stamped dark green cloth covers 15x10 with "G. Woolworth Colton's New Guide Map Of The United States & Canada With Railroads Counties &c" in gilt. First edition. This is the source of Colton's two General Atlas regional maps of the west, beginning with the 1864 atlas edition. This was the first map to show Montana (Wheat). Colton also issued in 1862 (W. Heckrotte copy) "Colton's Map of the Pacific States, California and Oregon...and British Columbia" which is from the same plate, earlier, and goes further north to include much of the Canadian west, but does not go as far east. All these maps derive from "Johnson's New Illustrated & Embellished County Map of the Republics of North America" (see our 1859 edition, #4012) which was first issued in 1856 (We assume this date because our copy says entered in 1856). This shows further that the relationship between Johnson and Colton included Colton using Johnson's maps, as well as Johnson using Colton's maps in Johnson's Family Atlas. Folded into dark green cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Colton's Map Of The States & Territories From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean. &c., &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt. Full color by county. |

Wheat: "In Arizona the year 1865 was made notable by the first great map of that Territory, the 'Official Map of the Territory of Arizona...by Richard Gird'...Gird's richly varied map concentrates upon Arizona and adjacent parts of California and Sonora..." Wheat also reprints a portion of Bancroft's description of Gird's life. Streeter lists the Hartley Map of Arizona as circa 1863 and hence earlier that the Gird, Wheat disagrees, listing Hartley as 1865 (as, he claims, the Library of Congress does also), thus making the Gird the more important map: "Except that it is overshadowed by Gird's great map, Hartley's production would receive more attention here." Gird's map is full of interesting detail and is also a beautiful graphic production. Full color by county.
