Maps dated 1743-71. Most of D'Anville's atlases were made up for the individual customer, so it appears that no two are alike. Many of the maps are multisheet maps that have here been joined, so the actual map sheet count is about 45. This set is accompanied by a printed list of "Cartes Geographiques de M. D'Anville" with the maps numbered 1-38 in ms, corresponding to the maps in the atlas. This sheet also lists "Ouvrages par ecrit, et qui ont ete imprimes." One of the listed books is dated 1777. D'Anville's maps have a clarity and directness that is very "modern." He read widely, and incorporated the best available geographic knowledge into his work. The English and others copied from his maps extensively. Many of the maps were missing when we acquired this atlas, and have been added subsequently. Maps stored, some bound, in a binding with half leather and cloth ties. "Atlas" printed on the spine. |

The third U.S. state atlas, after Mill's North Carolina and Burr's New York State. Contains six maps, one of which is a sheet of Geologic sections, and a sheet of Meteorological Diagrams. The maps are engraved by William Chapin of New York. The atlas accompanied Greenleaf's Survey of the State of Maine and his Map of Maine, all published together in 1829. The first four maps relate to the Northeastern Boundary dispute and are the only maps published in Maine that dealt with the boundary question. The fifth and sixth maps relate to grants, patterns of settlement, population, etc. The final plate gives Meteorological diagrams with information derived from Greenleaf's own observations of climate. In original half leather, marbled paper covered boards with printed title and index label. This copy has notes from Portland Bookseller Francis O'Brien written in 1954 and stating that "This copy is from the noted Maine collection of Janus G. Elder of Lewiston, Maine ... See tribute to him in the preface to Williamson's Bibliography of Maine." |

Colton & Co. No. 172 William St. New York 1856. Engraved by J.M. Atwood, New York. Entered ... 1856 by J. De Cordova ... Texas. (with untitled inset of southwestern U.S.). |

| Note |
First edition of Pressler's revision of De Cordova's map, and first edition published by Colton. Shows Texas east of the 102nd meridian. First issued by De Cordova in 1849, with editions of 1850, 51, 53, 56, 57, 58, and 61 (Ristow and Rosenberg), and a late unlisted edition in 1867 (see our #4801). De Cordova employed Pressler to revise the map in 1855 and then sold the rights to Colton in the same year. The 1849 edition has only two copies located. Eberstadt called the 1849 issue "possibly the finest (Texas map) of the period." Colton changed the inset map from the oval showing all of Texas to the southwestern portion of Colton's U.S. atlas map. J.M. Atwood was the engraver of all editions. With a list of the Land districts, this map was useful for both land promoters and settlers. Colton published a reduced version of the map in his 1856 Atlas of the World. The full color map is folded into stamped dark maroon leather covers 16x10.5 with "J. De Cordova's Texas J.H. Colton & Co. New York." in gilt. |

This atlas is exceptional for its "spheroidal" maps of the globe, showing the various continents and poles, shaded to give the effect of a sphere floating in space. The remaining maps are also very well executed and colored, mostly by hand, a few in colored litho. In recent years, this atlas has become rare in the trade. This is the only atlas that Garnier produced, according to Phillips. Tooley lists an 1860 edition. Covers are quarter leather marbled paper covered boards with a paper label, the burgundy leather spine is embossed with "F.A. Garnier. Atlas Universel et Spheroidal de Geographie" in gilt. On verso of half-title: Paris -- Imprimerie de P.-A. Bourdier et Cie., Rue Mazarine, 30. |
