Issued in vol 1 of the 1797 edition of Trumbull's history, opposite the title page (the History vol is not present here), the map was not issued in the complete 2 volume edition of 1818. Thompson says this map is inferior to Doolittle's Connecticut map of 1795 for Carey, however I find it a more interesting map. Outline color by county. |

Scarce, not in any references. The only mention of this map appears in ABPC 1987 Sotheby's sale to Quaritch for 1600 pounds. This copy came out of a 1730 house in Fairfield Connecticut, where it may have been since it was published. This copy is very browned with some losses at the edges restored. The map is very elaborate, showing all kinds of terrestrial and celestial information. Thompson also did a map of America in 1799 and a later edition of this map in 1817 (Tooley Dict.). Uncolored. Shows voyages of Captain Cook and crews, and discovery of Cape of Good Hope by Vasques di Gana in 1487. Relief shown by hachures. |

First detailed 19th century survey. Has Humphrysville "Woolen Manufactory..." notation, thus 1st edition, 2nd state (Thompson). Foundation map of state, first to show turnpikes. Extensive listing of manufactories, mills, churches, etc. Later published in smaller size, editions from 1820 to 1847. Engraved by Abner Reed, East Winsor. Thompson lists this same map as 1812, but it is entered in 1813, and the current Governor is listed as 1813-, leading one to believe an 1813 date would be more accurate. Outline color. With black top and bottom rollers. |

Large map of the United States based on the Arrowsmith/Tardieu maps of the same period, with a similar "Falls of Niagara" cartouche. Engraved by Amos Doolittle. Interestingly, credit for the cartouche is given to Tardieu, who copied it from Arrowsmith (perhaps evidence of a prejudice against the British from the War of 1812?). This map is far superior to either the Arrowsmith or Tardieu maps: in the west it incorporates both of Pike's maps of the Upper Mississippi and the western tributaries of the Mississippi and the Missouri, east of the Mississippi, it uses much from the Bradley "Postal" map of the United States of 1804/1812, including public survey lines, county formations, township boundaries, roads, etc. There are two very interesting inset maps and a commentary on ancient fortifications along the Ohio River. This highly detailed and accurate map must be one of the best of its period. Outline color by states. Maps is dissected into 35 sections and folds into marbled paper end sheet, then into a new gray cloth folding case 28x23 with "United States Shelton And Kensett 1816" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

Manuscript map. Dated by Bridgeport (1821 incorporation of city). Howard Welsh has two sheets of notes attempting to date this map by the appearance of the Southwick "notch" of 1805 (and noting that Thompson did not identify the appearance of the notch in 1805 as a map dating device). However, we think that Thompson's approach of the appearance of towns is best here. Who was Lucy Barker? The map is very well done. Edged in golden tan silk, with black top and bottom rollers. Maps say "Engraved for Woodbridge's Rudiments of Geography." Earliest Woodbridge atlas we have seen. The World in Hemispheres map does not show Palmer's land off South America. The title says "Larger Atlas" while the maps mention "Rudiments" so the use of this book is transitional - it has the same group of maps as Rudiments of Geography, which was published first in 1821. The advertisement in the back of the book clarifies things: "The following atlas was originally prepared to accompany the 'Rudiments of Geography'...The whole have been revised, and some additions made, to adapt them to a work on the same general plan with the "Rudiments," which is now preparing for the higher classes of schools." Thus this book is the first edition of Woodbridge's Modern Atlas, which did not come out in final form until late 1824 (that is when the text is copyrighted)-and this book may have served as Woodbridge's more "advanced" atlas until late 1824 when the Modern Atlas was first issued. Maps are hand painted with outline color or are without color. Covers are marbled paper covered cardboard 25x16 with a paper label printed with the above title in black. |
