Authors Carey, Mathew
Full Title (Title Page to) Carey's American Atlas: Containing Twenty Maps And One Chart ... Philadelphia: Engraved For, And Published By, Mathew Carey, No. 118, Market Street. M.DCC.XCV. [Price, Plain, Five Dollars-Coloured, Six Dollars.]
List No 2542B
Note First atlas of America printed in America. First edition. These maps were also published in Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography (1795) and most of the maps say "engraved for Carey's American edition of Guthrie's improved." The maps were again used for the 1796 edition of Carey's General Atlas, unchanged except for the Tennessee map, which is titled "Tennassee State" instead of "Tennassee Government" which is the title in both the American Atlas and the Guthrie Atlas - see Wheat and Brun, and has several counties delineated in the eastern part of the state which do not show in the 1795 edition of the map. NMM 480 (American Atlas) has "Tennassee State" indicating that Carey was not consistent. This atlas was the model for John Reid's American Atlas of 1796. This copy's maps have very strong impressions. Rebound quarter leather, marbled paper covered boards.

Full Title (Title Page to) Carey's General Atlas ... Philadelphia: Published By Mathew Carey. May 1, 1796.
List No 2862B
Note This was the first General Atlas published in the United States. It has the same maps as Carey's Guthrie Atlas, and adds a large map of the United States by Samuel Lewis, which is an imposing and important map, lacking in most copies. The Lewis map of the United States appears here for the first time. Even though the contents page of Carey's Guthrie Atlas calls for a map of the United States, it is not found in any copies that we know of. Karpinski (CXIV) incorrectly says this map appeared in the American Atlas of 1795. These maps are not folded horizontally, as are the 1795 Guthrie maps, and the Map of France has a 1798 engraving credit that does not appear on the Guthrie 1795 issue. This copy also contains a map not belonging to this atlas, glued inside the back cover, entitled "Chart of the Atlantic Ocean" published by Edmund M. Blunt, Newburyport in 1802. Atlas is bound in quarter leather, brown and black patterned paper covered boards.

Chart Atlas
Authors France. Depot-general de la Marine
Full Title (Title Page to) Neptune des cotes occidentales d'Amerique sur le Grand Ocean.
List No 0233B
Note This volume 7 of Neptune Francois forms an extensive atlas of charts of the western coasts of North and South America, with most charts dated or updated to the 1820's. 25 charts are listed in the index, yet 36 charts are present here. This copy is from the library of the Duc d'Orleans. This issue must be later than the NMM 256, since it has 10 extra charts dated from 1823 to 1828, the latest date in NMM256 is 1822. The eight Vancouver charts appear to be original issues or restrikes from the original plates, the La Perouse charts are absolutely restrikes on newer paper, with the Mappe Monde updated in Australia to show the coastal discoveries in the south. The progression of engraving style from the La Perouse to the 1828 charts is most interesting. The charts of Mexico and South America are largely copies of the Spanish Marine charts issued in the early 1800s showing the Malaspina Expedition tracks (see W. Heckrotte's copy of the Spanish charts). Bound in full red leather covers with decorative gold border and the same titles as above stamped on the spine.

Note Considered to be the best book on California prior to the American occupation. Wheat calls the large map "a landmark...It made these western regions known in European official circles...his highly original map has much to commend it." Wheat neglects to mention the similarities between this map and the John Arrowsmith Map of British North America, 1837 edition. While not a copy of the Arrowsmith, it clearly followed the Arrowsmith map in most areas. The atlas volume contains, in addition to the large map, plans of ports from Acapulco to the Aleutians, including San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and the mouth of the Columbia. The chart of San Francisco Bay is based on Beechey's chart of 1833, improved by de Mofras' own explorations, particularly in the north bay. This copy belonged to the Prince of Coburg, with a presentation inscription from the author. The large map is hand painted in outline color, all others are without color. Covers of the volumes are half leather dark green cloth covered boards with a crown embossed on the front in gilt. The title "De Mofras. Mexique. Californie. Oregon. 1" is stamped in gilt on the spine of volume one, "... 2" on volume two, and "...Atlas" on the atlas. Rare.
