The first edition, including Mexico to the Pacific, and with the dedication to Admiral John Willett Payne. In four sheets. Countries are outlined in color. The 1810 second and later editions only extend to the east coast of Mexico, presumably because Arrowsmith published his large map of Mexico in 1810. In its coverage of Mexico and Central America, this map is the largest scale and most accurate map of those areas published to date, preceding Pike's and Humboldt's maps by several years. It seems odd that Humboldt would criticize Arrowsmith for copying his map of New Spain, when Arrowsmith produced his own map (this West Indies Map) which included substantial portions of Mexico several years before Humboldt's map was issued. There are many differences between this map's rendering of Mexico and the 1810 Map of Mexico - the later map has more and better detail, but the earlier rendition is still impressive. Stevens and Tree only list two editions, 1803 and 1810, but Phillips lists an 1811 (P-Maps) and an 1816 (atlases). There probably were others. |

Considered to be the best book on California prior to the American occupation. Wheat calls the large map "a landmark...It made these western regions known in European official circles...his highly original map has much to commend it." Wheat neglects to mention the similarities between this map and the John Arrowsmith Map of British North America, 1837 edition. While not a copy of the Arrowsmith, it clearly followed the Arrowsmith map in most areas. The atlas volume contains, in addition to the large map, plans of ports from Acapulco to the Aleutians, including San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and the mouth of the Columbia. The chart of San Francisco Bay is based on Beechey's chart of 1833, improved by de Mofras' own explorations, particularly in the north bay. This copy belonged to the Prince of Coburg, with a presentation inscription from the author. The large map is hand painted in outline color, all others are without color. Covers of the volumes are half leather dark green cloth covered boards with a crown embossed on the front in gilt. The title "De Mofras. Mexique. Californie. Oregon. 1" is stamped in gilt on the spine of volume one, "... 2" on volume two, and "...Atlas" on the atlas. Rare. |

This is the eastern two thirds (including Texas) of Colton's important "Map of the United States of America, the British Provinces, Mexico, the West Indies and Central America, with part of New Grenada and Venezuela," (our #4312) here issued in pocket map form, without the eagle cartouche. Texas is shown extending north to the 42nd parallel. The western half was also issued separately (see Colton's catalogue) and with the fifth edition of Edwin Bryant's "What I saw in California," 1849 (see our copy). Outline color. This is Thomas Streeter's copy of this important map, identified as such by the inclusion of his handwriting on the inside cover, and the words "Louis Billon 1849" in ink on the inside front cover and verso of map. The border includes twelve views. As noted in Streeter, "This later issue of lot 3873 differs in the binding and in showing not only the 'Gold Region' near New Helvetia, but also 'El Dorado or Gold Region' along the Feather River. It also has quite an extensive 'Table of Distances' added at the right of the inset." This is the second 1849 edition, which was also produced as a wall map (see our #4312). In this edition Fremont's route is shown along the Humboldt River, and California has been extensively remapped. Map is in full color and folds into the original blind-stamped covers, 16x11, with the title "Colton's Map of the United States Mexico &c." in gilt on the front cover. |

Shows the Gold Regions in California. Atwood made important maps of the Gold Rush for Colton and Ensign & Thayer in 1849. In this map he publishes his own Gold Rush map, showing the routes to California and Oregon. This map is rare: it is not in Philips, Karrow, Wheat, Streeter, Graff, or nine years of Jolly. Wheat Gold 258 is an 1854 derivative of this map put out by Ensign, Bridgman & Fanning. This 1851 map is very well done, and possibly the only map that Atwood published under his own name. This map is derived from the large wall map of the United States of America (see our #3960). The division between the two plates used to make this portion of the wall map is visible in Tenn. and N. Early state map, inaccurate yet elegant. Graphically, it is exceptionally well done. Wheat: "This was the most elaborate map of California that had yet appeared. It is beautifully designed and drawn, and includes a large number of the mining towns, though it cannot be entirely commended for accuracy." A portion of this map was published as Gibbes' New Map of the Gold Region in California, 1851, which was also issued in the Stockton Directory and Emigrant's Guide to the Southern Mines, Stockton, 1852 (Rocq 12978).
