Wood block print. Hand colored. In Japanese. Shows the world based on Buddhist literature from India and China. This map is based on a Buddhist conceptual view of the world with India at the center, yet it includes contemporary European geographical knowledge -- Europe is shown as a group of islands in the upper left corner and South America is is an island in the ocean south of Japan on the right side. The map has many place names in Asia not found on European maps of the period. In the center of the map in the Himalayan Mountains is a quadruple helix symbolizing the origins of the four great rivers of the region (the Indus, the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Sutlej rivers) emanating from the heads of a horse, a lion, an elephant, and an ox. This is the site of the present day Lake Manasarovar, the highest fresh water lake in the world. "A land bridge connects China to an unnamed continent in the upper right corner ..."--Cortazzi. A scarce map that is not listed in Fordham's Cary bibliography, nor in the British Museum list - the BM lists shows a later map (1827) with a different title. This is a finely detailed map in the best Cary style. The cartography follows closely his 18" globe of 1818 (see our copy) and may have been inspired by it - the scale is the same at the equator. The tracks of the various navigations of the period are shown with great precision. An interesting feature is the repetition of western Europe and Africa on both sides of the map. Full color. This may be the earliest chart to depict the heights of mountains and the lengths of rivers together in one illustration, with the rivers hanging down over the mountains. Wolter says that Bulla's Tableau Comparatif of 1826 is the earliest of the combined mountain and river type, but he had not seen this chart by Gardner done three years earlier and does not list it. This chart is beautifully done and, while not large in size, it is impressive in its scope. Full color. With 48 inch spheres, this may be one of the largest World Maps produced in the early 1800's. Arrowsmith's Map of the World on a Globular Projection had 36 inch spheres and was last published in 1814. Gardner's map is fairly up to date in the American Northwest, less so in the plains area. He probably used Wyld's and Arrowsmith's maps of North America as sources. Not in Phillips or Wheat. British Museum World catalog lists this edition and an 1837 edition. The drawing and engraving of this map is very elegant and spare. In eight sheets, dissected into 6 sections each, and mounted on linen with dark green silk edging. Outline color. Folds into a new gray cloth folding case 36x23 with "Western And Eastern Hemispheres J. Gardner 1825" stamped in gold on the spine. |

This large and decorative map by Monk reflects the interest in Central America in the mid 50's (see Palmer, Wyld, Disturnell, and others) but adds the U.S. coast line from Florida to Texas, which is missing in most of the other maps of Central America. With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). Colton took over the publishing of this map from Johnson in 1849. This is a later Colton issue. Many updates have been made in North America, the Arctic, Africa, and elsewhere. The journey of a Frenchman around the world in 1854 to 1857 is shown in manuscript with interesting notes on the travel. Two stickers on the outside of the case are French in origin, further indicating that the map was most likely purchased in Paris by the Frenchman at the end of his journey in 1857 - showing that Colton was selling his maps in Europe at that time and that his maps were competitive with European maps - at least our traveler thought so. See our 1847 first edition by Johnson. Full color map with silk edging, dissected into 20 sections. Folds into half leather brown cloth covered boards 38x41 with ties, titled "Colton's World.
