Full Title A New Map of the Western Parts of Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland and North Carolina, Comprehending the River Ohio, and all the Rivers, which fall into it, Part of the River Mississippi, the Whole of the Illinois River, Lake Erie, Part of the Lakes Huron, Michigan &c. And all the Country bordering on these Lakes and Rivers. By Thos. Hutchins, Captain in the 60 Regiment of Foot. London, Published according to Act of Parliament Novembr. ye 1st, 1778 by T. Hutchins ... Engrav'd by T. Cheevers.
List No 5044.000
Note This map was published separately and at the same time as Hutchins' "Topographical Description..." and should accompany the book. Streeter calls it "by far the best map of the west printed to that time." It was the first large scale map of the area west of the Allegheny Mountains based on personal observations, although Hutchins gives credit to Lewis Evans' "Map of the Middle Colonies" as the best prior source of information about the area. The map contains extensive printed notes which describe important aspects of the country depicted. This map ranks with the most important American maps issued in the 18th century and is now rare. Hutchins later became the first Geographer of the United States. With outline color. Map is dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into new green cloth folding boards and quarter leather green cloth slip case 24x16 with "Hutchin's New Map Of Western Parts Of Virginia, Etc. 1778" on the spine in gold.

Note Wheat & Brun: "This is the best map of Pennsylvania to appear in the 18th century, and the first detailed map of the State to show its exact boundaries." This copy is a mixed state, as is usually the case, with the title and dedication in the first state. It is fully colored by county by a contemporary hand. Wheat & Brun list the first four states as 1792, with states V and VI as 1795, state VII as 1798, and state VIII as 1806. Ristow lists later editions of 1816 and 1817 published by Emmor Kimber in Philadelphia. Howell also published a smaller Map of Pennsylvania, reduced from the large map, in 1792, with later issues in 1795 and 1796, Ristow lists editions of 1811 and 1817. Howell's maps were the first maps of the state published after the revolution, and were used until Melish published his map in 1822. Samuel Lewis used Howell's map as the source for his Pennsylvania map in Carey's American Atlas of 1795. Map is dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into its original brown leather slip case 24x17.5 with "Howell's Map" printed on the front in ink, and then into a new dark green cloth folding case 25x18 with -Pennsylvania R. Howell 1792" stamped on the spine in gold.

Full Title Map Of The Northern Part of the State Of New York. Compiled from actual Survey By Amos Lay 1812. Entered ... 16th day of July 1812 by Amos Lay ... New-York.
List No 2293.001
Note 2nd Lay map of N.Y. State, 1st was in 1801. In 1817 Lay extended the State map south to include New York City. This map extends only to the Pennsylvania border. Lay's 1801 map covers only the most northern parts of the state. For some reason, his 3 editions of the state map expand coverage from north to south ending with complete coverage in the 3rd edition. Phillips states that this map was engraved by Samuel Maverick in Newark, New Jersey, although nothing on our copy indicates this. Shows the Proposed Canal from Rome to the west, and shows Indian Reservations in yellow. Much information on land surveys and development, Military tracts, and evolving towns. Signature of Franklin Bache on inside cover. Bache was the great grandson of Benjamin Franklin, brother of A.D. Bache (head of the Coast Survey), and a noted teacher and scientist. Bache was in the War of 1812, and it is possible that this map was acquired for use therein, as it shows many of the areas of the conflict. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Outline color by county. Map folds into original marbled card covers 22x14, and into a new tan cloth folding case 23x15 with "Northern Part Of New York Amos Lay 1812" stamped in gold on the spine.

Melish spent more than six years on this monumental project, which he hoped would serve as a model for other state map. The map was sponsored by the state and based on individual county surveys. List No 0975.001
Note The first edition. With inset maps of fourteen cities, South Florida, Oregon and the Mandan Districts (with a chart of the Outlet of Oregon River), two Statistical tables, and fourteen profiles of portages, canals and railroads. With Tanner's "Memoir...Intended to Accompany His New Map of the United States." This was one of the most popular general maps of the eastern United States and went through several editions (Phillips, Karrow, Yale, and Howes show editions of 1829, 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1838, 1839, 1841, 1843, and 1850). Distances on all major roads are shown between towns, an effort that Tanner states in the Memoir caused the map to take twice as long to produce. Latitude is measured from Washington, D.C., making this a truly "American" map. Although Tanner states that "The new map of the United States is founded on, and embraces generally, the valuable and original information, contained in our American Atlas," the general form of the map bears a striking resemblance to J.&A. Walker's Map of the United States published in London in 1827, a fact that Tanner does not mention. Howes (T23) shows "An Alphabetical Index to the four sheet map of the United States," also to accompany editions of the map. This is one of best early large maps of the United States and the premier map for its period, without equal until Mitchell produced the first edition of his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in 1834. Kept in a half leather case with ties to keep it closed. Measuring 23x18, it has "Tanner's United States" embossed on the red leather spine.

Note 1st edition, 1st wall map issued by Mitchell. This edition does not have the counties delineated and numbered. Ristow mistakenly says all editions have the townships (he means counties) numbered, but this one, the first, does not, thereby eliminating the index of counties and thus showing more of the western territory. This map predates the Traveler's Guide by 1 year, and thus is Mitchell's first "original" production, as opposed to the Finley material he reissued as the American Atlas and Pocket Maps. The case for the map has a leather label saying "Traveler's Map of the United States." Copyright date is October 10, 1831. There is no other date on the map. Ristow thinks the map was issued in early 1832, but it is not in Phillips until 1834 edition (which probably has the counties indicated by number and the 1831 copyright), so Ristow may not have seen this edition, but rather the 1834. The map is hand painted in bright full color by state (insets by county), dissected in 24 sections with green paper end sheets, mounted on linen and edged in pink silk. The covers 24x20 are half red leather marbled paper covered boards with ties and a leather label embossed with "Traveller's Map Of The United States" in gilt.

Note First edition, here in the form of a case map, in exceptionally fine condition, with the original marbled end sheets and half leather marbled covers 31x24.5 with gold stamped leather label saying "Mitchell's Map Of The United States." It is difficult to find any changes between this and the 1835 edition, although there probably are some. Ristow states that there was an issue of this map in 1834 without the word "Mitchell" in the title (see our copy #4843), and he does not mention this word appearing in the title until the 1835 issue. He also notes an 1834 issue of essentially the same map but with the title changed to "A New Map of the United States" (Karrow 1-1484 and our #4396). Insets show the United States, south part of Florida, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, north part of Maine, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Albany, Baltimore and Washington, Cincinnati, Charleston and New Orleans. Full bright color by state with green cloth edging. Dissected into 36 sections.

Full Title Map Of The First And Second Anthracite Coal Field. By Samuel B. Fisher Pottsville, Pennsylvania. 1836. Watson's Lith., Philada. Lithog. by J.F. & C.A. Watson, No. 62 Walnut Street, Philadelphia.
List No 4304.000
Note Very large and detailed map of the coal fields around Pottsville, Pennsylvania. This must be one of the earliest maps of this type, and we can find no record of it. Watson's Lithography produced other coal maps during this period, and this is earlier than any that were listed. This is an unusual thematic map showing coal deposits and ownership. Edged in green silk and dissected into 36 sections. Map has marbled end sheets and folds into a new dark teal cloth folding case 39x22 with "Pennsylvania Coal Fields S.B. Fisher 1836" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Tanner, assisted by E.B. Dawson, W. Allen & J. Knight. (title by) J.W. Steel Sc. (with 17 inset maps and 1 profile). (with index) An alphabetical index to the four sheet map of the United States by H. S. Tanner. Philadelphia: Rackliff and Jones, Printers, South-West Corner of George and Swanwick streets.
List No 4845A
Note Covers to map, and cover and title page of index. The seventh edition. Michigan peninsula has been substantially redrawn, the profiles in the lower left corner of the map have been eliminated to reveal a good bit of Republican Texas, Wisconsin and Iowa are shown, Missouri is enlarged in the northwestern corner, and new counties are added in most of the settling states. This is a major revision of the map. There is added a new key index system of numbers (and letters for Texas) to go with an attached "Alphabetical Index to the Four Sheet Map of The United States" (see our #4846). The index is bound in patterned tan cloth covered boards 18.5x11 with a label reading "Index Of Places, Contained On Tanner's Map Of The United States." Most copies of this map are either colored in outline or in full color by state, this copy is in full color by county - the only such example we have seen. Streeter Texas 1232 is the 1836 edition of this map, which apparently shows Texas in much the same form and includes the separate index volume. Map is edged in green cloth, dissected into 60 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with marbled end sheets into the original half leather red cloth covers 22x17 with ties, title on the spine is stamped in gold and reads "Map Of The United States With Index 1839."

List No 2903.000
Note One issue of 8 issues (Ristow). This issue has inset maps and business directories of Philadelphia, Germantown, Frankford, Bridesburg plus five small towns (all at the top), and Manayunk, Falls of Schuykill, Hestonville, Paschallville, Tacony and Holmesburg at the bottom. Other issues of the map have Philadelphia and Trenton and Philadelphia and Camden in the titles. Lake and Beers may have done eight issues to cover different parts of the local market, much in the manner of Beers' six different issues of his Atlas of New York and Vicinity of 1867-8. The date of 1860 on the map has been changed to 1869 by someone drawing the "9" in place of the "0" which probably had rubbed off - the artist thought incorrectly that the date was 1869 (unless there was an unrecorded later issue and it really was a "9"). Full color map, dissected into 36 sections, and backed and bordered in linen. Folds into blue marbled end sheets 31x28, and is layed into a new green cloth folding case with "Vicinity Of Philadelphia Lake And Beers 1869" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note An unusual very large scale map of the center oil region (the largest scale we have seen) made by the photographic process. Privately produced, this map was printed during the hiatus between the First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania ending in 1858, (see our (No. 4120) Henry Darwin Rogers map) and the beginning of the Second Geological Survey in 1874. Henry Wrigley was a civil engineer active in the oil region who self published a series of five oil region maps by the photographic process, on the map he states "By this means (photography) every one can be kept constantly advised of the progress of all developments and possess the information desired at the time he most needs it." Wrigley goes on to say that the most active sections of the map will be updated every three months with "fresh plates." Subscribers will receive the updated sections as they are issued. "As the expense of publishing the work by photographing is very great, and as the work is local, the cost of the maps will be necessarily much greater than heretofore." Each of the large scale maps was $100, and $150 if the buyer wanted the updates - a huge amount in those times, but then this was probably only purchased by those who gambled in the high stakes game of oil development. Photography was used in the Civil War for maps (see our examples) but this is the only instance of its use in the commercial map trade that we have seen. Phillips lists three later Wrigley maps that were lithographed, indicated that this unusual scheme was not long lived. Map is without color. Dissected in 28 sections. Folds into brown leather end sheets 34x26 with "Centre Oil Region From Oil City To Parker's Landing, By Henry E. Wrigley, Civil Engineer, Titusville, Pa.", map lies in a new brown cloth folding case with "Map Of The Centre Oil Region Henry E. Wrigley 1871" stamped in gold on the spine.
