Note	1st edition. Other editions of 1828, 36, 39, 42. Reengraved by Colton in 1846 (see our 1853 edition). Rare. Stokes: "This is one of the most complete, accurate, and beautiful early engraved maps showing New York and its environs." It was engraved by Peter Maverick. Stokes states that J. M. Atwood reengraved this map in 1846 for Colton (although the reengraving changed the map substantially). The 1828 reissue was in guide book form by Hooker and Blunt, Disturnell issued the 1836 and 39 editions (see our 1839 issue), and Goodrich issued the 1842 edition. Stokes dates the map at 1811 because of a reference to its publication in the October, 1811 issue of The American Medical and Philosophical Register. Eddy's name is written "I.H. Eddy" on the map, the "I" probably mistaken by the engraver for the "J." Map has outline color, dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with a gray marbled end sheet into a new gray cloth folding case 21x13 with "Thirty Miles Round New York J. Eddy 1811" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note	2nd Lay map of N.Y. State, 1st was in 1801. In 1817 Lay extended the State map south to include New York City. This map extends only to the Pennsylvania border. Lay's 1801 map covers only the most northern parts of the state. For some reason, his 3 editions of the state map expand coverage from north to south ending with complete coverage in the 3rd edition. Phillips states that this map was engraved by Samuel Maverick in Newark, New Jersey, although nothing on our copy indicates this. Shows the Proposed Canal from Rome to the west, and shows Indian Reservations in yellow. Much information on land surveys and development, Military tracts, and evolving towns. Signature of Franklin Bache on inside cover. Bache was the great grandson of Benjamin Franklin, brother of A.D. Bache (head of the Coast Survey), and a noted teacher and scientist. Bache was in the War of 1812, and it is possible that this map was acquired for use therein, as it shows many of the areas of the conflict. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Outline color by county. Map folds into original marbled card covers 22x14, and into a new tan cloth folding case 23x15 with "Northern Part Of New York Amos Lay 1812" stamped in gold on the spine.

Note	This map was published after Eddy's death (see biography of Eddy in American Monthly Magazine and Critical Review, May, 1818). Eddy was deaf, and died young at 35, on December 22, 1817. He also published a map of the county 30 miles around New York City (circular) in 1811 (see our copy), and a map of the western part of New York State for the canal commissioners in 1811. An extraordinary map maker about whom little has been known. He planned an American Atlas and a Map of the State of New Jersey, both abandoned after his death (perhaps Tanner's American Atlas was somehow related to Eddy's proposed Atlas). Tanner lists the three New York maps as sources for his New York Map in his American Atlas and has only the highest praise for Eddy. This New York State map is remarkable for its clarity of execution and detail. New York state counties and other states with outline color. Maps is dissected into 16 sheets, and lays in a new burgundy cloth folding case 29x25 with "State Of New York J.H. Eddy 1818" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note	Vance published the upper and western part of this map in 1823 (see Streeter 3818). Dey enlarged it in 1824 and 1825 by adding an eastern portion, taking the state to its eastern boundary with New England, and also adding a lower section that includes a "Geological Profile Extending from the Atlantic to Lake Erie" (which shows the Erie Canal) and four views of the complete Erie Canal. On the main map is a profile of the western and middle sections of the Erie Canal and tables of statistics and geological remarks. The whole production is a celebration of the recently completed Erie Canal. Streeter calls the 1823 issue a "fine large scale colored map." Full color by county. Map has silk edging and is dissected into 36 sections. Folds with marbled paper end sheets, and lies loosely in quarter leather marbled paper covered boards 30x17 with leather ties, "Dey's Improved Map Of N. York" is stamped in gilt on the spine. Scarce.

Note	Colored by county, engraved by J.V.N. Throop. 1826 on title. Shows the Farmington Canal extended to Northampton, Mass., which is further than the uncolored 1826 edition, so we presume it was updated at least a year later. Later Editions published to 1853. The quality of the engraving is extraordinary. Throop engraved Ohio for Lucas' 1823 General Atlas. Tooley lists an O.H. Throop of New York who engraved for Amos Lay (New York 1832) as well as for Asa Whitney, and a D.S. Throop who also engraved for Lay (U.S. 1832). Map is bordered in green silk , dissected in 24 sections, and folds with marbled end sheets into a blue marbled slip case 26x21.

Note	First edition, to accompany the author's "British Dominions in North America." A later enlarged edition was published in New York by Sherman & Smith in 1846 (see our #5071), reprinted with additions in 1852, 1853 (no significant changes)(see NMM 479 for an atlas edition of the map, 1853). Joseph Bouchette Junior carried on his father's work and this map is a worthy successor to the elder Bouchette's 1815 map of Upper and Lower Canada. The scale is almost three times as large and the size of the map is doubled. A list of authorities is given, all Canadian, ending with "several important American Authorities" (which are unnamed). Lands belonging to the Canada Company are shown. There is a great deal of detail in the U.S. portions of the map, and attention is paid to the Maine boundary dispute with a note - but only the British claim line is shown. Outline color by state. Map has green cloth edging and is dissected into 35 sections. Folds with blue paper end sheets into a new gray cloth folding case 28x21.5 with "Upper And Lower Canada J. Bouchette, Jr. 1831" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note	First edition, here in the form of a case map, in exceptionally fine condition, with the original marbled end sheets and half leather marbled covers 31x24.5 with gold stamped leather label saying "Mitchell's Map Of The United States." It is difficult to find any changes between this and the 1835 edition, although there probably are some. Ristow states that there was an issue of this map in 1834 without the word "Mitchell" in the title (see our copy #4843), and he does not mention this word appearing in the title until the 1835 issue. He also notes an 1834 issue of essentially the same map but with the title changed to "A New Map of the United States" (Karrow 1-1484 and our #4396). Insets show the United States, south part of Florida, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, north part of Maine, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Albany, Baltimore and Washington, Cincinnati, Charleston and New Orleans. Note	Scarce map of Upper Canada and the Northeastern United States west to eastern Illinois. This is, for its period, one of the most detailed maps of the U.S. and Canadian border area that we have seen. Taylor lists his sources carefully, and, mysteriously, it appears that this map was his only production, other than an obscure map of the Ottawa river country (Winearls 584). Note	First edition. This map is an extensive revision and redrawing on the same scale of Bouchette's 1831 map of Upper and Lower Canada (see our #4436). The map is extended east to include all of Nova Scotia and further north to include Anticosti Island. New inset maps are added of Environs of Montreal, Lake Superior, and the Niagara District, and the other insets of Newfoundland and British North America are thoroughly revised. The changes to the U.S./Canadian boundaries in Oregon (1846) and Maine (1842) are shown, as well as the first three, short Canadian railways (compared to a large number shown underway in the U.S.). In addition, there are many other revisions to the main map, well documented by Winearls. Copyrights are given for Canada and New York. NMM 479 is a folio atlas version of the six sheets of this map issued in 1853. Winearls lists two later editions of the map in 1852 and 1853. To us, the most interesting aspect of this edition is the fact it was engraved and printed in New York by Sherman and Smith, rather than in London by J. & C. Walker and James Wyld as with the 1831 edition. The style is very definitely "New York" - bold and visually striking. This is the second large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - after the map of the Canadas by David Taylor, 1834 (see our #4691). It is a most beautiful and rare map. Full color by county. Map is dissected into three sheets of 16 sections each. Map has silk edging, and folds with green plain end sheets into a burgundy leather slip case with "Bouchette's Map Of British North America 1846." stamped in gold.

Note	Colton took over the publishing of this map from Johnson in 1849. This is a later Colton issue. Many updates have been made in North America, the Arctic, Africa, and elsewhere. The journey of a Frenchman around the world in 1854 to 1857 is shown in manuscript with interesting notes on the travel. Two stickers on the outside of the case are French in origin, further indicating that the map was most likely purchased in Paris by the Frenchman at the end of his journey in 1857 - showing that Colton was selling his maps in Europe at that time and that his maps were competitive with European maps - at least our traveler thought so. Note	One issue of 8 issues (Ristow). This issue has inset maps and business directories of Philadelphia, Germantown, Frankford, Bridesburg plus five small towns (all at the top), and Manayunk, Falls of Schuykill, Hestonville, Paschallville, Tacony and Holmesburg at the bottom. Other issues of the map have Philadelphia and Trenton and Philadelphia and Camden in the titles. Lake and Beers may have done eight issues to cover different parts of the local market, much in the manner of Beers' six different issues of his Atlas of New York and Vicinity of 1867-8. The date of 1860 on the map has been changed to 1869 by someone drawing the "9" in place of the "0" which probably had rubbed off - the artist thought incorrectly that the date was 1869 (unless there was an unrecorded later issue and it really was a "9"). Full color map, dissected into 36 sections, and backed and bordered in linen. Folds into blue marbled end sheets 31x28, and is layed into a new green cloth folding case with "Vicinity Of Philadelphia Lake And Beers 1869" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note	1st edition, shows all of Staten Island. This edition extends further south than the 1863 issue of "New-York and Its Vicinity" that we have (although Haskell lists an 1863 edition that is the same coverage as this edition - #1121) but it does not extend as far north (it extends 19 miles north and 15 miles south, shown with circles). Walling seems to have published two variants of this map to meet the demands of two markets - similar to Beers' "Philadelphia and Vicinity" map of the same period. Much land ownership information is shown outside of Manhattan Island. Full color by county, dissected into 36 sections.

Note	Civil War map - Confederacy green, North red, border states yellow. A pasted down sheet in the bottom margin explains the color coding and gives population statistics for the three regions. There is an ad for "Colton's...Complete Series of War Maps" on the verso of the cover and a pasted down list of Union and Confederate Political and Military leaders on the verso of the map. The map was sold in London by Sampson Low, Son & Co., by arrangement with Colton. All the prices quoted for Colton's maps on the paste down are in pounds. There was great demand in England for maps of the American Civil War, and Colton exploited it by providing his maps to English map sellers. W.H. has an identical copy of this map sold by Crutchly. Stanford also sold this map under his imprint. Full color. Dissected into 32 sections.
