Case Map, Chart Map
Authors Dessiou, J. Foss, Faden, William, 1750?-1836
Full Title A General Chart of the West Indies And Gulf Of Mexico, describing The Gulf and Windward Passages, Coast Of Florida, Louisiana And Mexico, Bay of Honduras and Musquito Shore, likewise the Coast Of The Spanish Main To The Mouths Of The Orinoco. Drawn from the Surveys taken by Mr. Geo. Gauld, and others, the New Spanish Charts, &c. and adjusted from recent Observations, By J. Foss Dessiou, Master of the Royal Navy. Approved by the Chart Committee of the Admiralty. London, Published by W. Faden ... Charing Cross, June 4, 1808. Engraved by J. Tyrer, Chapel St. Pentonville. (inset) Chart Of The Virgin Islands. (inset) Chart Of The Coast Of Biruquete, Panama & Veragua, From Point Solano To Point Burica.
List No 4754.000
Note With two inset charts. This is a highly detailed general chart of the West Indies that is similar in scope and size to Arrowsmith's chart of the same area, but Dessiou's chart gives more detail to the coast lines, harbors, water depths, currents and less detail of the inland areas. We can find no specific reference to this wonderful chart, other than Tooley's Dictionary. Dessiou is listed in the National Maritime Museum Catalog as the author of a London edition of Le Petit Neptune Francais, also published by Faden. Scarce. Map is dissected into 40 sections, and mounted and edged with linen. Outline color. The map has a paste down label on the end sheet reading "Sold by Wm. Faden, Geographer to the King, Charing Cross". Folds into a new blue cloth folding case 32.5x21 with "Chart Of The West Indies J. Foss Dessiou 1808" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note This is an important early map of the United States, and one of the earliest maps engraved by J.H. Young. This ranks with the Melish and Lewis maps of 1816, and the Shelton/Kensett map of 1817. Large map dissected into 24 pieces and mounted on linen with silk edging. In outline color on main map and block color on the inset. Physical sections show relief in varying scale. Folds to 29x27 with no cover.

Full Title A New Map Of Mexico And Adjacent Provinces Compiled From Original Documents By A. Arrowsmith. 1810. London, Published 5th October 1810, by A. Arrowsmith 10 Soho Sque. Hydrographer to His Majesty. Engraved by E. Jones ... (inset) Valley Of Mexico From Mr. Humboldt's Map. (inset) Veracruz. (inset) Acapulco.
List No 2032.000
Note 5th ed."Hydrographer to His Majesty." Dated 1810. Four separate sheets dissected into 16 sheets each, with light blue silk edging and linen backing. Streeter is incorrect in calling this the first edition, it is actually the last. The Adams - Onis Treaty line of 1819 is clearly marked, Arrowsmith styled himself "Hydrographer to His Majesty" in 1820 (Tooley), this edition has a road from Queretaro to Panco Valles which does not appear in W.H.'s additions to 1815 edition, as well as other roads and new towns around Mexico City and two small groups of islands off the California Coast that do not appear on the 1810 edition, this edition appears in the Atlas to Thompson's Alcedo, c.1825 copy, in the Bancroft. The mystery is why Arrowsmith did not add "additions to 1820" on the title, and in fact erased the "additions to 1817" that must have appeared on the plate from the most recent changes made before the 1820 changes, thereby leaving only 1810 on the title. With outline color. The sheets fold with marbled end sheets into a new tan cloth folding case 26x18 with "Mexico A. Arrowsmith 1820" stamped on the spine in gold.

Entered ... 16th day of June 1820. Published by James Finlayson Agent Philada. Successor to John Melish, Improved to 1823. (inset) West Indies.
List No 3948.000
Note The last edition of Melish's map of the United States, first published in 1816, and the 25th state identified by Martin/Ristow. This edition has the three additional sheets at the bottom of the map (added in the second state of the 1822 edition) that expand the coverage of Mexico and the West Indies. Compared to the first 1816 edition, there are many changes in the Great Plains area of the U.S. (that first appeared in the 1822 edition) based on Long's Map of 1822 (although Melish does not mention Long in his preface to the Geographical Description edition of 1822). Ristow (A la Carte) says there are no changes between between the 1823 edition and the second state of the 1822 edition, other than the change in publisher and date. Outline color by state or territory. The map is dissected into 50 sections, backed with linen, and edged in white silk. It folds into a new dark blue cloth folding case 25x17 with black ties, the spine is embossed with "Map Of The United States. John Melish. 1823" in gold.

Note The first edition, listed in Phillips but not by Stevens and Tree or Wheat (both list 1824/25 as the first edition). A large impressive map showing with great accuracy the recent discoveries in the north west passage, but wildly off in the American southwest - Wheat: "a large and beautiful map, excellent in all respects save for its southwestern geography." In the southwest, Wyld adds many mountain ranges that were purely speculative - probably just to fill in blank spaces in the map (unlike Arrowsmith). In northwestern Texas is a curious note on the topography of the area attributed to "Mellish" which is copied from a pre-1822 edition of his large map of the United States. Comparing this edition to the derived map of 1846, "Mexico, the British Possessions...," one sees many changes in the northern areas and few in the southwest. Stevens and Tree list editions of 1824, 1827/8, 1838, and 1851/56. The 1824/25 edition adds a fold out flap of Mexico and Central America (WH copy). With outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into a brown marbled paper covered slip case with black leather spine with "Map Of North America" stamped in gilt.

List No 3827.001
Note The third edition (although I can detect no changes from the first issue of 1830). Has the note in the lower left explaining the origin of the term of Fredonia. This map is the only one I have seen that copies almost literally three earlier maps: Lewis and Clark (1814), Long (1822), and Arrowsmith's Mexico (1820). Laurie used the term Fredonia, we may assume, to create a novelty of his map, in the same manner as his "Cabotia" map of 1814. Has the original case with label, and an advertisement for Crunchley's publications on the verso of the map. W. Heckrotte has another edition dated 1834 improved to 1836 (with changes in California based on John Arrowsmith's Map of British North America, 1834), and the second edition of 1832. The western topography is changed to incorporate Arrowsmith's map of 1834 (British North America) and an independent Texas is shown. Editions seen of 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1849. It appears that the map was updated frequently in order to keep it current. It is an excellent and beautiful map.

Note This is the fourth edition of the 1834 Brue map showing Jedidiah Smith's routes in the west. Although Picquet says this 1839 edition is augmented from the 1834, I can find no changes between the two. Wheat calls the 1834 edition "one of the foundation stones of western mapping history." Jedidiah Smith's geography in the Great Basin and California is shown, based on a letter of Smith describing his journeys published in the Nouvelles Annales de Voyages, Paris 1828 (Wheat). Two insets show the environs of Mexico City and Vera Cruz, and the Yucatan. Texas is still shown as a part of Mexico. Under the title Picquet has added his name as publisher, Picquet acquired all Brue's maps from his widow in 1835. There was a second edition in 1835, and a third in 1837. Wheat does not mention this fourth edition. Map is hand painted in outline color, dissected into 21 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into loose marbled paper wrappers and then into a marbled paper covered slip case with a red label stamped with "Mexique" in gilt.

Note Third edition, first being 1846 (according to Ristow, although Karrow only lists an 1847). Texas is still in large configuration with a panhandle running up to Oregon. California and the Great Basin are shown only as Upper or New California. Fremont's 1843 and 1845 maps are incorporated, but not the 1848 map. The title is in the lower left, with an inset map of the West Indies and an inset of Newfoundland. In the 1850 edition the title is moved to the upper right. In the 1853 edition it is moved to the upper left. Map is dissected into 16 sections and edged in pink silk. Full color by state. Folds into green and pink plaid end sheets and half leather marbled covers 38x35 with ties and a label reading "United States" in elegant manuscript.

Note Late edition, 1st edition 1830. Lacks the note in the lower left corner regarding the origin of the term Fredonia, such note appears in the earlier editions. However, the western geography of this edition is most interesting, as it incorporates Fremont's discoveries. It does not have indications of gold discoveries. Graphically, a very beautiful map. See Spafford's Geography 1809 for further discussion of Fredonia. Cruchley published the 1830, 1832, and 1833 editions (as did Laurie, according to Wheat 393).

Note First edition. Very large map of North America with nine inset maps of important cities. This map contains and is the basis of all the maps that appear in the Rogers and Johnston Atlas of the United States of North America, published in the same year. It is a stunning map, very detailed in the west, Wheat did not see this map, but did comment on two of the western maps in the Atlas - "This map is...notable for its clarity, though it is equally notable for the amount of information it contains. W and A.K. Johnston, of Edinburgh, were engravers who well understood their art, and their maps are outstanding." The Proposed Pacific Railway routes are shown. This map compares favorably to the large Colton and Mitchell U.S. maps of the same date (which are also on the same scale) and generally it is more accurate. Scarce, with only the later 1861 edition (title slightly changed - "Map of the United States and Mexico, with Canada...") in Karrow. This first edition is not in any references. A later edition, 1859, was issued with geological coloring (HR 13-123). The map case has Stanford's name at the bottom of the spine, indicating that he sold the map (and perhaps printed it as he did the Atlas). See also the 1861 U.S. only edition (#5405) and the full 1869 edition (#5402).

Inset of Central America, text on top of map describing British American Possessions, Time Tables, and U.S. Census for 1860. Later, this map became the more elaborate 1871 "American Union Railroad Map of the United States..." by Hassis & Lubrecht, also published by D.L. The Proposed transcontinental railroad is shown going south of Salt Lake City, Wyoming is still part of Dakota, and a Proposed Southern Pacific Railroad runs from Fort Smith to Sacramento. Later, this map became the more elaborate 1871 "American Union Railroad Map of the United States..." by Hassis & Lubrecht, also published by D.L. Gurnsey (see our copy, WH's copy, and Heaston Cat. 19 for a reproduction). The Proposed transcontinental railroad is shown going south of Salt Lake City, Wyoming is still part of Dakota, and a Proposed Southern Pacific Railroad runs from Fort Smith to Sacramento. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Folded into black paper covered boards 24.5x21 with "The American Continent" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

Note 1st edition. Not in Streeter, Phillips, Wheat. Map shows routes of important reconnaissances, Indian trails, roads, railroads in operation, projected railroads, army routes, Indian lands and reservations. One of the earliest detailed Army surveys of the area. The map was printed in two sheets, a north sheet and a south sheet. The north sheet appears in the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies as Plate CXIX, with the same title as this map, but with the title placed in the upper right corner of the north sheet. We also have the North sheet without title, dated c1875, with much additional information on new routes, railroads, etc. This map is signed by William E. Merrill, Maj. Engrs., and dated August 10, 1867. Merrill also signed our copy of the Warren Map of the U.S., 1867, with a signature date of August 26, 1867 Merrill later made maps of Kansas (See Karrow). Graff misspells Merrill's name, as does Streeter (his signature is hard to read). Dissected into 48 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into two dark green cloth end boards 22.5x13.5 with paper label reading "Kansas, Texas, And Indian Territory, With Parts Of Colorado And New Mexico. Engineer Bureau, W.D. Prepared for Issue in Engineer Office, M.D. Mo. All Person Into Whose Hands The Map Falls Are Particularly Requested To Send All Corrections And Additions To The Chief Engineer, Mil. Div. Of The Mo., St. Louis." With hand painted color.

Case Map
Authors Haasis & Lubrecht
Full Title The American Union Railroad Map Of The United States, British Possessions, West Indies, Mexico, And Central America. 1871. Published by Haasis & Lubrecht, 107 Liberty Street, New York. Smith & McDougal, Electrotypers, 82 Beekman Street, New York. (inset) Central America.
List No 3822.000
Note This is a reworking of the Lubrecht and Rosa map "The American Continent" of 1864, and the first edition, first issue in a new format. Statistics at the top of the 1864 map are here replaced with a view "From the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean" emphasizing the recently completed transcontinental railroad. Also, an elaborate title and view of a steam engine and train station have replaced the more subdued 1864 title. Population tables of the United States are added to the left and right sides of the map. The map itself has been updated to show political and some topographical changes of the ensuing seven years. Projected railroad lines are shown running everywhere in the west. The coloring is very bright, to match the decidedly optimistic (expansionist) flavor of the map. D.L. Guernsey published editions of 1871 and 1874 in Concord New Hampshire, with no major changes in the map. WH has an 1873 edition by Haasis and Lubrecht that adds text next to the population figures, more railroads, no changes in topography. Issued in a cover with a label in German from Wilhelm Lubrecht in Stuttgart, Germany, indicating it may have been sold to emigrants. Full color. Map has green paper edging, is dissected into 16 sections, and fold into a new gray cloth folding case 35x27 with "American Union Railroad Map Haasis & Lubrecht 1871" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note Related to Williams' New Nat. Map for Mitchell. Compare to 1857 and 1860 Mitchell New National Map exhibiting the United States... We assume that this Williams is the son of Wellington Williams and that he took over his father's map and reissued it. It is interesting to see that John M. Atwood published this map - it appears that he not only published maps, but also drew them for others, i.e. Colton and Ensign & Thayer. Inset maps include: Island Of Newfoundland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island & Connecticut, The Atlantic Ocean Showing The Communications By Cable And Steam Between Europe And The United States, Is. Of Porto Rico, Virgin Is. And S. Cruz, Islands Of Japan ..., Map Of The Great Pacific Ocean With It's Shores And Islands, Alaska, and The Sandwich Islands Or Hawaiian Group. Full color by state.
