This map was published separately and at the same time as Hutchins' "Topographical Description..." and should accompany the book. Streeter calls it "by far the best map of the west printed to that time." It was the first large scale map of the area west of the Allegheny Mountains based on personal observations, although Hutchins gives credit to Lewis Evans' "Map of the Middle Colonies" as the best prior source of information about the area. The map contains extensive printed notes which describe important aspects of the country depicted. This map ranks with the most important American maps issued in the 18th century and is now rare. Hutchins later became the first Geographer of the United States. With outline color. Map is dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into new green cloth folding boards and quarter leather green cloth slip case 24x16 with "Hutchin's New Map Of Western Parts Of Virginia, Etc. 1778" on the spine in gold. |

We believe this is Lucas' largest separate map of Baltimore. Papenfuse illustrates editions of 1822, 1836 and 1841. This 1852 issue may be the last (Ristow). It is interesting to note that the copyright has been renewed to 1852, indicating that Lucas was still active as a map publisher. Full color. Map is dissected into 18 sections, edged in green silk, and mounted on linen. Folds with marbled end sheets into a new mint green cloth folding case 19.5x13 with "Baltimore F. Lucas 1852" stamped in gold on the spine. |

This large and decorative map by Monk reflects the interest in Central America in the mid 50's (see Palmer, Wyld, Disturnell, and others) but adds the U.S. coast line from Florida to Texas, which is missing in most of the other maps of Central America. With a large inset map of the World, statistics on the Yucatan, boundary notes on Costa Rica, Historical Notes on Belize and the Mosquito Coast, and the usual abundance of Monk's decorative sailing ships. The inside cover lists this map, Monk's New American Map, and Monk's Railroad and Telegraph Map - which we have never heard of before (although Karrow does list an 1856 edition: 1-1612). Full color map, folded into stamped brown cloth covers 16x11 titled "Monk's New Map Of Central America, Cuba, Florida &c." Relief shown by hachures. |
