This is an unusual survivor - in about 1854 someone cut out the Northwestern one third of John Melish's large Map of the United States (1823 edition) and updated it to show the states, territories and proposed territories of that period, notably Kansas and Nebraska but no Gadsden Purchase, and Shoshone and Dakota (which are usually seen on circa 1858-59 maps). The new boundaries are hand colored with white past down labels for names of states and territories. It might have been used as a school map in the west - we found it in a small town in the California gold country. This portion is dissected into 15 sections mounted on linen with silk edging, and folds down to 23x15. |

Shows the Southern States west to eastern Missouri and Kansas, with an inset map titled "Enlarged Plan Of The Site Of The Most Recent Battles," which shows the area between Richmond and Baltimore. Many cities and towns are underlined in red, indicating a battle site or important military concentrations. Map is dissected into 21 sections and backed with linen folding into burgundy cloth covers 20x12 with Edward Stanford's printed label reading "Map Of The Seat Of War In America. London: Edward Stanford, 6, Charing Cross, S.W. 1862." Outline color by state, with the South in pink, North in blue, and Maryland in yellow. Scarce. |

1st edition. Not in Streeter, Phillips, Wheat. Map shows routes of important reconnaissances, Indian trails, roads, railroads in operation, projected railroads, army routes, Indian lands and reservations. One of the earliest detailed Army surveys of the area. The map was printed in two sheets, a north sheet and a south sheet. The north sheet appears in the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies as Plate CXIX, with the same title as this map, but with the title placed in the upper right corner of the north sheet. We also have the North sheet without title, dated c1875, with much additional information on new routes, railroads, etc. This map is signed by William E. Merrill, Maj. Engrs., and dated August 10, 1867. Merrill also signed our copy of the Warren Map of the U.S., 1867, with a signature date of August 26, 1867 Merrill later made maps of Kansas (See Karrow). Graff misspells Merrill's name, as does Streeter (his signature is hard to read). Dissected into 48 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into two dark green cloth end boards 22.5x13.5 with paper label reading "Kansas, Texas, And Indian Territory, With Parts Of Colorado And New Mexico. Engineer Bureau, W.D. Prepared for Issue in Engineer Office, M.D. Mo. All Person Into Whose Hands The Map Falls Are Particularly Requested To Send All Corrections And Additions To The Chief Engineer, Mil. Div.
