List No 2032.000
Note 5th ed."Hydrographer to His Majesty." Dated 1810. Four separate sheets dissected into 16 sheets each, with light blue silk edging and linen backing. Streeter is incorrect in calling this the first edition, it is actually the last. The Adams - Onis Treaty line of 1819 is clearly marked, Arrowsmith styled himself "Hydrographer to His Majesty" in 1820 (Tooley), this edition has a road from Queretaro to Panco Valles which does not appear in W.H.'s additions to 1815 edition, as well as other roads and new towns around Mexico City and two small groups of islands off the California Coast that do not appear on the 1810 edition, this edition appears in the Atlas to Thompson's Alcedo, c.1825 copy, in the Bancroft. The mystery is why Arrowsmith did not add "additions to 1820" on the title, and in fact erased the "additions to 1817" that must have appeared on the plate from the most recent changes made before the 1820 changes, thereby leaving only 1810 on the title. With outline color. The sheets fold with marbled end sheets into a new tan cloth folding case 26x18 with "Mexico A. Arrowsmith 1820" stamped on the spine in gold.

Authors Melish, John
Full Title (Northwestern Part only of) Map of the United States with the contiguous British & Spanish Possessions Compiled from the latest & best Authorities by John Melish. Engraved by J. Vallance & H.S. Tanner. Entered ... 16th day of June 1820. Published by James Finlayson Agent Philada. Successor to John Melish, Improved to 1823.
List No 5188.000
Note This is an unusual survivor - in about 1854 someone cut out the Northwestern one third of John Melish's large Map of the United States (1823 edition) and updated it to show the states, territories and proposed territories of that period, notably Kansas and Nebraska but no Gadsden Purchase, and Shoshone and Dakota (which are usually seen on circa 1858-59 maps). The new boundaries are hand colored with white past down labels for names of states and territories. It might have been used as a school map in the west - we found it in a small town in the California gold country. This portion is dissected into 15 sections mounted on linen with silk edging, and folds down to 23x15.

Note Folding, backed with linen, in a case. This copy was issued separately in its own folder. It is state 5 of our five issues: it says improved to 1828 and has many changes in the north shore of Hudson's Bay and the western coast of Alaska, the area around Texas and Santa Fe has been redrawn as to political boundaries, Arkansas has been reduced to its second form (Paullin), and New and Old California are renamed Upper and Lower California. The borders beyond the neat lines are very wide.

Note The third edition (although I can detect no changes from the first issue of 1830). Has the note in the lower left explaining the origin of the term of Fredonia. This map is the only one I have seen that copies almost literally three earlier maps: Lewis and Clark (1814), Long (1822), and Arrowsmith's Mexico (1820). Laurie used the term Fredonia, we may assume, to create a novelty of his map, in the same manner as his "Cabotia" map of 1814. Has the original case with label, and an advertisement for Crunchley's publications on the verso of the map. W. Heckrotte has another edition dated 1834 improved to 1836 (with changes in California based on John Arrowsmith's Map of British North America, 1834), and the second edition of 1832. The western topography is changed to incorporate Arrowsmith's map of 1834 (British North America) and an independent Texas is shown. Editions seen of 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1849. It appears that the map was updated frequently in order to keep it current. It is an excellent and beautiful map.

Note This is the fourth edition of the 1834 Brue map showing Jedidiah Smith's routes in the west. Although Picquet says this 1839 edition is augmented from the 1834, I can find no changes between the two. Wheat calls the 1834 edition "one of the foundation stones of western mapping history." Jedidiah Smith's geography in the Great Basin and California is shown, based on a letter of Smith describing his journeys published in the Nouvelles Annales de Voyages, Paris 1828 (Wheat). Two insets show the environs of Mexico City and Vera Cruz, and the Yucatan. Texas is still shown as a part of Mexico. Under the title Picquet has added his name as publisher, Picquet acquired all Brue's maps from his widow in 1835. There was a second edition in 1835, and a third in 1837. Wheat does not mention this fourth edition. Map is hand painted in outline color, dissected into 21 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into loose marbled paper wrappers and then into a marbled paper covered slip case with a red label stamped with "Mexique" in gilt.

Note Third edition, first being 1846 (according to Ristow, although Karrow only lists an 1847). Texas is still in large configuration with a panhandle running up to Oregon. California and the Great Basin are shown only as Upper or New California. Fremont's 1843 and 1845 maps are incorporated, but not the 1848 map. The title is in the lower left, with an inset map of the West Indies and an inset of Newfoundland. In the 1850 edition the title is moved to the upper right. In the 1853 edition it is moved to the upper left. Map is dissected into 16 sections and edged in pink silk. Full color by state. Note Late edition, 1st edition 1830. Lacks the note in the lower left corner regarding the origin of the term Fredonia, such note appears in the earlier editions. However, the western geography of this edition is most interesting, as it incorporates Fremont's discoveries. It does not have indications of gold discoveries. Graphically, a very beautiful map. See Spafford's Geography 1809 for further discussion of Fredonia. Cruchley published the 1830, 1832, and 1833 editions (as did Laurie, according to Wheat 393).

Note This edition is not in Vogdes (he lists editions of 1869, 1876, and 1888). The copyright date is 1876, so it is probably similar to that edition. There are many changes, as one would hope (or expect) between this and the 1869 edition, both in graphic composition and topography. The map has been completely reengraved by S.B.Linton (the original engraver) and shows much of the General Land Office surveys. It is so full of detail as to be difficult to read in many areas. Two views are added: the Capital-Nevada, and University-California. The 1888 edition is reengraved completely yet again (WH's copy). This copy belonged to Lewis M. Clement, Chief Engineer of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad. The inside of the case flap closure reads "Lewis M. Clement, Chief Engineer of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad - Office: Safe Deposit Building Room 8 - San Francisco, Cal." in calligraphic manuscript. The map is slightly trimmed at the bottom (affecting only the decorative border) in order to fit into his custom brown cloth case 28x17. Map has outline color, is in two sheets (Northern and Southern halves), each undissected and mounted on linen.

It is copyrighted in 1901 with the present title (indicating that it may be the first edition in this form) and in 1893 and 1898 as "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Standard Map of the United States" (suggesting that it may have been derived from a larger map of the entire U.S.). A pocket map version was also made of different parts of this map - see our 1888 Standard Map of California and Nevada, with the scale slightly enlarged. Outline color by state. Dissected into 42 sections. Folds into a new black cloth folding case 29x23 with "Pacific Coast States Rand McNally 1901" stamped in gilt along the spine.
