This map was published separately and at the same time as Hutchins' "Topographical Description..." and should accompany the book. Streeter calls it "by far the best map of the west printed to that time." It was the first large scale map of the area west of the Allegheny Mountains based on personal observations, although Hutchins gives credit to Lewis Evans' "Map of the Middle Colonies" as the best prior source of information about the area. The map contains extensive printed notes which describe important aspects of the country depicted. This map ranks with the most important American maps issued in the 18th century and is now rare. Hutchins later became the first Geographer of the United States. With outline color. Map is dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into new green cloth folding boards and quarter leather green cloth slip case 24x16 with "Hutchin's New Map Of Western Parts Of Virginia, Etc. 1778" on the spine in gold. |

With insets of the West Indies and a Statistical Table. This map has the distinction of being the first large scale detailed map made in the U.S. that showed the entire country from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This copy is an early state of the first edition -this is Martin's third state of the first edition and Ristow's fourth state (Ristow discovered a town and trail added in Ohio - Adelphi - making for a sub state of Martin's third state). The first state was an incomplete proof copy, making this the second/third state of the completed copy. The differences between this and the first complete state are small: Mansfield, Wooster, and Adelphi (and a trail from Adelphi to Athens and Chillicothe) added in Ohio, and "Vevay or" added before "Swiss Vineyards" in southeastern Indiana. Martin and Ristow identify seven states of the 1816 edition. Melish published new editions in 1818 (five states), 1819 (two states), 1820 (eight states), 1822 (two states), and 1823 (one state) for a total of twenty five different issues. Notwithstanding the many issues, the map has become extremely rare. A book accompanied the map (though issued separately) titled "A Geographical Description of the United States..." (see our #2424). Outline color by state or territory. This copy is dissected into 40 sections, backed with linen, and edged in brown cloth. It folds with marbled end sheets into new blue cloth folding boards and slip case 24.5x16.5 with leather label on spine reading "Melish. Map Of The United States. 1816" in gold. |

The U.S. portion of the map is identical to Maclure's 1809 base map. This map seems to have a long history. It first appears as the Maclure base in 1809 (indicating that it must have been published as a Political map at that time, but we can find no record of it), then it shows up in Amer. Phil. Soc. 563 as the same map but dated 1811, then a second copy in the same holding dated 1813 and having "2nd edition, Containing the Seat of War &c." - both copies by T.L. Plowman of Philadelphia. This is a portion of the map here - it has the same notations, including the 1813 date, but three sections have been added, including Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, the West Indies, Central America and part of South America. And it has a new title (as above) and is dated 1817 - the title is a paste on slip which presumably covers the earlier title - A Map of the United States of America (as on Maclure). Ristow and Karrow then list an 1820 edition of this same map. The title mentioning the Seat of War indicates that the map had use during the War of 1812. After Plowman's name is "entered according to act of Congress 22nd Mar." With outline color by state and cloth edging. Dissected into 24 sections and folding into half leather marbled paper covered boards 27x17 with ties. |

The last edition of Melish's map of the United States, first published in 1816, and the 25th state identified by Martin/Ristow. This edition has the three additional sheets at the bottom of the map (added in the second state of the 1822 edition) that expand the coverage of Mexico and the West Indies. Compared to the first 1816 edition, there are many changes in the Great Plains area of the U.S. (that first appeared in the 1822 edition) based on Long's Map of 1822 (although Melish does not mention Long in his preface to the Geographical Description edition of 1822). Ristow (A la Carte) says there are no changes between between the 1823 edition and the second state of the 1822 edition, other than the change in publisher and date. Outline color by state or territory. The map is dissected into 50 sections, backed with linen, and edged in white silk. It folds into a new dark blue cloth folding case 25x17 with black ties, the spine is embossed with "Map Of The United States. John Melish. 1823" in gold. |

Scarce map of Upper Canada and the Northeastern United States west to eastern Illinois. This is, for its period, one of the most detailed maps of the U.S. and Canadian border area that we have seen. Taylor lists his sources carefully, and, mysteriously, it appears that this map was his only production, other than an obscure map of the Ottawa river country (Winearls 584). We believe that this is the first large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - all of its predecessors, including the early maps by Smyth, Holland, and the Bouchettes, were engraved and printed in London. First edition. Very large map of North America with nine inset maps of important cities. This map contains and is the basis of all the maps that appear in the Rogers and Johnston Atlas of the United States of North America, published in the same year. It is a stunning map, very detailed in the west, Wheat did not see this map, but did comment on two of the western maps in the Atlas - "This map is...notable for its clarity, though it is equally notable for the amount of information it contains. W and A.K. Johnston, of Edinburgh, were engravers who well understood their art, and their maps are outstanding." The Proposed Pacific Railway routes are shown. This map compares favorably to the large Colton and Mitchell U.S. maps of the same date (which are also on the same scale) and generally it is more accurate. Scarce, with only the later 1861 edition (title slightly changed - "Map of the United States and Mexico, with Canada...") in Karrow. This first edition is not in any references. A later edition, 1859, was issued with geological coloring (HR 13-123). The map case has Stanford's name at the bottom of the spine, indicating that he sold the map (and perhaps printed it as he did the Atlas). See also the 1861 U.S. only edition (#5405) and the full 1869 edition (#5402). |

This immense, large scale map at first appears to be manuscript, entirely hand drawn. Dissected into 35 sections and mounted on linen. Upon closer inspection, it proves to be a lithograph of a hand drawn field map, with several large sections filled in or corrected in manuscript and with the waterways colored blue. It is centered on the area around Suffolk, Virginia, extending north and east to Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads and Norfolk, west to Franklin, Zuni and the Blackwater River, and south to about nine miles south of the North Carolina border. It was probably hand drawn and lithographed for immediate field use (note the title says "Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret") with a very small press run, and corrected and updated as needed. There is a great deal of local information shown: the names of all property owners and their farms and buildings, railroads, rivers and small streams, the large Dismal Swamp, fortifications, roads and paths and distances thereon, "old Rebl. camp," "Rebl camp," "Marmaduke Ellis (Deserter)," "Negroes," and more. A "Note" at the top right corner gives the sources of the map: "Coast lines by U.S. Coast Survey" and then a list of surveys by Maj Wetterall, Maj. Stratton, 1st Lieut. James, 1st Lieut. Ch. Worrett, Lt. Soederquist, and Geo. Kayser, that were used in the construct of this map. Below the Note is the manuscript signature of "Lieut. James Ch Engr. Suffolk" and a manuscript presentation of the map "To Brig. Gen Terry with compliments of 1st Lt. C.H. James Act. Chief Engineer Maj. Gen Pecks Staff." We have dated the map (1863) based on the Soederquist Map of Suffolk & vicinity (Stephenson 661) which Stephenson dates (1863). Soederquist's map is on the same scale as this map, and is most likely a companion map to the Soederquist map of Norfolk & Vicinity that is listed in the "Note" as a source for this map. Reissue, with new discoveries, of 1857 Warren "Map of the Territory of the United States..." Although Freyhold's name is not on the title, he clearly redrew this map from his earlier 1858 edition (where his name does appear on the title). This is earlier than the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions (Streeter 3080 and 3081), and should be distinguished from them in having the title still in the lower left corner (not in the lower center as in the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions), and because it does not have the Alaska inset, has 47 authorities vs. 48, and is dated Aug 26, 1867 in Ms. next to the same inscription mentioned by Streeter on his later copy (Wm. E. Merrill, etc., which Streeter mistakes for E. Hamill). Mail routes in red ink (original?)(Streeter says they were dropped from the second 1868 ed.) plus many interesting Ms. additions of names of forts, and extension of pacific railroad. Cf. Wheat 1185. Wheat does not mention this edition and was not aware of it (see his "correction" of Wheeler's mention of the map in the note, p. 244). See a very informative article by Lewis Buttery on a slightly earlier state of this map (early 1867) found at West Point - "Warren Map of 1867." Outline color. Wheat: "a complex map very different in aspect from that of 1868, yet no less beautiful, and employing the new information that had reached the War Department during the 1870's." It is a complete redrawing of the Freyhold/Warren map of 1868, larger in scale, and so dense in information that the itineraries are no longer shown. There is an inset of Alaska in the lower right. This copy belonged to James Douglas, the founder of the Phelps Dodge mining empire in Arizona and for whom Douglas, Arizona, was named. In the same year the Army issued somewhat larger versions of this map on thin paper for field use, one example being the Map of California and Nevada with Parts of Utah & Arizona (see our #3360). Each sheet folds with a marbled end paper into brown cloth covers 21.5x12.5, the sheet no. and region shown in each map is written in ms on the inside covers, alongside bookplates reading "Jamais Arriere. Ex Libris James Douglas. History Science Literature Theology ..." The photocopy of sheet 6 folds into new brown cloth covers very similar to the original covers. All six maps reside in a new brown cloth slip case 22.5x13.5 with a black label on spine reading "Territory of the U.S. west of the Mississippi River. Edward Freyhold. 1879" in gilt. With outline color by state, water in full color. |

In the same year the Army issued somewhat larger versions of this map on thin paper for field use, one example being the Map of California and Nevada with Parts of Utah & Arizona (see our #3360). Each sheet folds with a marbled end paper into brown cloth covers 21.5x12.5, the sheet no. and region shown in each map is written in ms on the inside covers, alongside bookplates reading "Jamais Arriere. Ex Libris James Douglas. History Science Literature Theology ..." The photocopy of sheet 6 folds into new brown cloth covers very similar to the original covers. All six maps reside in a new brown cloth slip case 22.5x13.5 with a black label on spine reading "Territory of the U.S. west of the Mississippi River. Edward Freyhold. 1879" in gilt. With outline color by state, water in full color. |

Very large map of the northeast and middle coastal areas, which, although complete by itself, was also part of a twelve sheet map in six parts (two sheets to each part) that extended west to the 105th parallel and south to Florida and measured 10x15 feet (see Modelski). All the existing railroads are shown in great detail at a scale of six miles to one inch. Because of it great size, the map was hand colored. Dissected into 49 sections and backed with linen.
