Note Wood block print. Hand colored. In Japanese. Shows the world based on Buddhist literature from India and China. This map is based on a Buddhist conceptual view of the world with India at the center, yet it includes contemporary European geographical knowledge -- Europe is shown as a group of islands in the upper left corner and South America is is an island in the ocean south of Japan on the right side. The map has many place names in Asia not found on European maps of the period. In the center of the map in the Himalayan Mountains is a quadruple helix symbolizing the origins of the four great rivers of the region (the Indus, the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Sutlej rivers) emanating from the heads of a horse, a lion, an elephant, and an ox. This is the site of the present day Lake Manasarovar, the highest fresh water lake in the world. "A land bridge connects China to an unnamed continent in the upper right corner ..."--Cortazzi. Note The 1st ed. of this map, here published as a complete chart of six sheets joined, dissected into 16 sections and folded into Jeffery's original case with a printed label: "Bought of Thomas Jefferys Engraver..." Both map and case are preserved in a new half cloth blue marbled paper book-like case 36x31 with "Green And Jefferys. Chart of North and South America. 1753." stamped in gilt on a leather label on the spine. "This is one of the most important American maps of the period, the first to label Behring's Straits, and the most accurate of the time in establishing more correct placements of the coasts of North and South America and Northeastern Asia. The map is extensively annotated by Green to show the differences of latitude and longitude between his placements on the map and other cartographers, notably Bellin, D'Anville, Brouckner, Popple, and especially DeLisle and Buache in their claims of new discoveries on the American Northwest coast. Jefferys also published Green's "Remarks, In Support of the New Chart of North and South America, in six sheets" which further detail Green's attack on DeLisle's cartography and French claims to the American Northwest. The six sheets of this map are also found bound individually with the text, as in Streeter 3453. Our copy has a printed paste down label in the lower corner of sheet six that explains the color code used to distinguish the different claims of the British, French, etc. Stevens & Tree list several later issues of this chart, including those that appear in Jeffery's American Atlas of 1775. Note The U.S. portion of the map is identical to Maclure's 1809 base map. This map seems to have a long history. It first appears as the Maclure base in 1809 (indicating that it must have been published as a Political map at that time, but we can find no record of it), then it shows up in Amer. Phil. Soc. 563 as the same map but dated 1811, then a second copy in the same holding dated 1813 and having "2nd edition, Containing the Seat of War &c." - both copies by T.L. Plowman of Philadelphia. This is a portion of the map here - it has the same notations, including the 1813 date, but three sections have been added, including Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, the West Indies, Central America and part of South America. And it has a new title (as above) and is dated 1817 - the title is a paste on slip which presumably covers the earlier title - A Map of the United States of America (as on Maclure). Ristow and Karrow then list an 1820 edition of this same map. The title mentioning the Seat of War indicates that the map had use during the War of 1812. After Plowman's name is "entered according to act of Congress 22nd Mar." With outline color by state and cloth edging. Dissected into 24 sections and folding into half leather marbled paper covered boards 27x17 with ties.

Note The first edition. With inset maps of fourteen cities, South Florida, Oregon and the Mandan Districts (with a chart of the Outlet of Oregon River), two Statistical tables, and fourteen profiles of portages, canals and railroads. With Tanner's "Memoir...Intended to Accompany His New Map of the United States." This was one of the most popular general maps of the eastern United States and went through several editions (Phillips, Karrow, Yale, and Howes show editions of 1829, 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1838, 1839, 1841, 1843, and 1850). Distances on all major roads are shown between towns, an effort that Tanner states in the Memoir caused the map to take twice as long to produce. Latitude is measured from Washington, D.C., making this a truly "American" map. Although Tanner states that "The new map of the United States is founded on, and embraces generally, the valuable and original information, contained in our American Atlas," the general form of the map bears a striking resemblance to J.&A. Walker's Map of the United States published in London in 1827, a fact that Tanner does not mention. Howes (T23) shows "An Alphabetical Index to the four sheet map of the United States," also to accompany editions of the map. This is one of best early large maps of the United States and the premier map for its period, without equal until Mitchell produced the first edition of his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in 1834. Kept in a half leather case with ties to keep it closed. Measuring 23x18, it has "Tanner's United States" embossed on the red leather spine.

Michigan peninsula has been substantially redrawn, the profiles in the lower left corner of the map have been eliminated to reveal a good bit of Republican Texas, Wisconsin and Iowa are shown, Missouri is enlarged in the northwestern corner, and new counties are added in most of the settling states. This is a major revision of the map. There is added a new key index system of numbers (and letters for Texas) to go with an attached "Alphabetical Index to the Four Sheet Map of The United States" (see our #4846). The index is bound in patterned tan cloth covered boards 18.5x11 with a label reading "Index Of Places, Contained On Tanner's Map Of The United States." Most copies of this map are either colored in outline or in full color by state, this copy is in full color by county - the only such example we have seen. Streeter Texas 1232 is the 1836 edition of this map, which apparently shows Texas in much the same form and includes the separate index volume. Map is edged in green cloth, dissected into 60 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with marbled end sheets into the original half leather red cloth covers 22x17 with ties, title on the spine is stamped in gold and reads "Map Of The United States With Index 1839."

Note Third edition, first being 1846 (according to Ristow, although Karrow only lists an 1847). Texas is still in large configuration with a panhandle running up to Oregon. California and the Great Basin are shown only as Upper or New California. Fremont's 1843 and 1845 maps are incorporated, but not the 1848 map. The title is in the lower left, with an inset map of the West Indies and an inset of Newfoundland. In the 1850 edition the title is moved to the upper right. In the 1853 edition it is moved to the upper left. Map is dissected into 16 sections and edged in pink silk. Full color by state. Folds into green and pink plaid end sheets and half leather marbled covers 38x35 with ties and a label reading "United States" in elegant manuscript.

Shows the Southern States west to eastern Missouri and Kansas, with an inset map titled "Enlarged Plan Of The Site Of The Most Recent Battles," which shows the area between Richmond and Baltimore. Many cities and towns are underlined in red, indicating a battle site or important military concentrations. Map is dissected into 21 sections and backed with linen folding into burgundy cloth covers 20x12 with Edward Stanford's printed label reading "Map Of The Seat Of War In America. London: Edward Stanford, 6, Charing Cross, S.W. 1862." Outline color by state, with the South in pink, North in blue, and Maryland in yellow. Scarce.

Inset of Central America, text on top of map describing British American Possessions, Time Tables, and U.S. Census for 1860. We can find no earlier edition of this map, so the "Revised Edition" is puzzling. Lubrecht lists three foreign publishers for this map: Bacon in London, Volkmar in Leipsic, and Lubrecht & Co. in Stuttgart. An edition in German is described in Karrow. Later, this map became the more elaborate 1871 "American Union Railroad Map of the United States..." by Hassis & Lubrecht, also published by D.L. Gurnsey (see our copy, WH's copy, and Heaston Cat. 19 for a reproduction). The Proposed transcontinental railroad is shown going south of Salt Lake City, Wyoming is still part of Dakota, and a Proposed Southern Pacific Railroad runs from Fort Smith to Sacramento. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Folded into black paper covered boards 24.5x21 with "The American Continent" stamped in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

Very large map of the northeast and middle coastal areas, which, although complete by itself, was also part of a twelve sheet map in six parts (two sheets to each part) that extended west to the 105th parallel and south to Florida and measured 10x15 feet (see Modelski). All the existing railroads are shown in great detail at a scale of six miles to one inch. Because of it great size, the map was hand colored. Dissected into 49 sections and backed with linen.
