1st French edition, 8 sheets. Very interesting French reengraving of Mitchell's map, emphasizing their territorial claims at the expense of the British claims, in particular they add an area of "contestations" between French claims and the English claims. |

This is the second edition of this important map, dated 1755 but published in 1757, according to the British Museum. The only change from the first issue is the addition of several panels of interesting text in ocean. The original eight printed sheets of the map are here assembled in two large panels (each with four sheets) each dissected into 36 sections and mounted on linen. Uncolored, as issued. In the sixth line of the first column of the text this issue is referred to as the Second Edition One of the most important maps in American history, it went through five editions (see Stevens). We believe this second edition is scarcer than the other editions as it appears less often on the market. Compare to the first French edition of 1856 (our copy) regarding the conflicting claims of the British and French to American territory. |

1st edition 1841. Shows independent Texas. Similar to Mitchell's World which was first published in 1837. Although it looks like the Mitchell, particularly in the title and overall size, they are clearly different maps. Map is in two sheets, each dissected into 16 sections and edged in green cloth. Sheets have beautiful marbled paper end sheets, and fold in an elegant full red leather folio 39x27 embossed in gold with "Teesdale's Map Of The World" and a decorative border. No mention of the U.S. Exploring Expedition track (which the Mitchell shows). Full color by country. |

Related to Williams' New Nat. Map for Mitchell. Compare to 1857 and 1860 Mitchell New National Map exhibiting the United States... We assume that this Williams is the son of Wellington Williams and that he took over his father's map and reissued it. It is interesting to see that John M. Atwood published this map - it appears that he not only published maps, but also drew them for others, i.e. Colton and Ensign & Thayer. Inset maps include: Island Of Newfoundland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island & Connecticut, The Atlantic Ocean Showing The Communications By Cable And Steam Between Europe And The United States, Is. Of Porto Rico, Virgin Is. And S. Cruz, Islands Of Japan ..., Map Of The Great Pacific Ocean With It's Shores And Islands, Alaska, and The Sandwich Islands Or Hawaiian Group. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 36 sections and folds into a new green cloth folding case 29x29 with "United States, Canada, Mexico &c. G.W. Williams 1876" stamped in gilt on the spine. Relief shown by hachures. |
