The 1st ed. of this map, here published as a complete chart of six sheets joined, dissected into 16 sections and folded into Jeffery's original case with a printed label: "Bought of Thomas Jefferys Engraver..." Both map and case are preserved in a new half cloth blue marbled paper book-like case 36x31 with "Green And Jefferys. Chart of North and South America. 1753." stamped in gilt on a leather label on the spine. "This is one of the most important American maps of the period, the first to label Behring's Straits, and the most accurate of the time in establishing more correct placements of the coasts of North and South America and Northeastern Asia. The map is extensively annotated by Green to show the differences of latitude and longitude between his placements on the map and other cartographers, notably Bellin, D'Anville, Brouckner, Popple, and especially DeLisle and Buache in their claims of new discoveries on the American Northwest coast. Jefferys also published Green's "Remarks, In Support of the New Chart of North and South America, in six sheets" which further detail Green's attack on DeLisle's cartography and French claims to the American Northwest. The six sheets of this map are also found bound individually with the text, as in Streeter 3453. Our copy has a printed paste down label in the lower corner of sheet six that explains the color code used to distinguish the different claims of the British, French, etc. Stevens & Tree list several later issues of this chart, including those that appear in Jeffery's American Atlas of 1775. Outline color. |

With two inset charts. This is a highly detailed general chart of the West Indies that is similar in scope and size to Arrowsmith's chart of the same area, but Dessiou's chart gives more detail to the coast lines, harbors, water depths, currents and less detail of the inland areas. We can find no specific reference to this wonderful chart, other than Tooley's Dictionary. Dessiou is listed in the National Maritime Museum Catalog as the author of a London edition of Le Petit Neptune Francais, also published by Faden. Scarce. Map is dissected into 40 sections, and mounted and edged with linen. Outline color. The map has a paste down label on the end sheet reading "Sold by Wm. Faden, Geographer to the King, Charing Cross". Folds into a new blue cloth folding case 32.5x21 with "Chart Of The West Indies J. Foss Dessiou 1808" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

1st edition. Other editions of 1828, 36, 39, 42. Reengraved by Colton in 1846 (see our 1853 edition). Rare. Stokes: "This is one of the most complete, accurate, and beautiful early engraved maps showing New York and its environs." It was engraved by Peter Maverick. Stokes states that J. M. Atwood reengraved this map in 1846 for Colton (although the reengraving changed the map substantially). The 1828 reissue was in guide book form by Hooker and Blunt, Disturnell issued the 1836 and 39 editions (see our 1839 issue), and Goodrich issued the 1842 edition. Stokes dates the map at 1811 because of a reference to its publication in the October, 1811 issue of The American Medical and Philosophical Register. Eddy's name is written "I.H. Eddy" on the map, the "I" probably mistaken by the engraver for the "J." Map has outline color, dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with a gray marbled end sheet into a new gray cloth folding case 21x13 with "Thirty Miles Round New York J. Eddy 1811" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

A scarce map that is not listed in Fordham's Cary bibliography, nor in the British Museum list - the BM lists shows a later map (1827) with a different title. This is a finely detailed map in the best Cary style. The cartography follows closely his 18" globe of 1818 (see our copy) and may have been inspired by it - the scale is the same at the equator. The tracks of the various navigations of the period are shown with great precision. An interesting feature is the repetition of western Europe and Africa on both sides of the map. Full color. Map is dissected into 30 sections and folds into a dark olive green marbled board slip case 29x21 with label reading "World. Sold By C. Smith. Mapseller, 172 Strand, London." This may be the earliest chart to depict the heights of mountains and the lengths of rivers together in one illustration, with the rivers hanging down over the mountains. Wolter says that Bulla's Tableau Comparatif of 1826 is the earliest of the combined mountain and river type, but he had not seen this chart by Gardner done three years earlier and does not list it. This chart is beautifully done and, while not large in size, it is impressive in its scope. Full color. Map is mounted on linen, dissected into 8 sections with an end sheet label reading "The Most Approved Modern Maps, Plans, And Charts, Of every Description, From The Best Authorities, Constantly on Sale at William Darton's Map, Print, and Chart Warehouse, 58, Holborn Hill, London..." Map folds into a dark green marbled cardboard case with a turquoise paper label printed with the map title (as above), there is a "William Darton's, Map seller" bookplate label on the back of the case. |

The first edition. With inset maps of fourteen cities, South Florida, Oregon and the Mandan Districts (with a chart of the Outlet of Oregon River), two Statistical tables, and fourteen profiles of portages, canals and railroads. With Tanner's "Memoir...Intended to Accompany His New Map of the United States." This was one of the most popular general maps of the eastern United States and went through several editions (Phillips, Karrow, Yale, and Howes show editions of 1829, 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1838, 1839, 1841, 1843, and 1850). Distances on all major roads are shown between towns, an effort that Tanner states in the Memoir caused the map to take twice as long to produce. Latitude is measured from Washington, D.C., making this a truly "American" map. Although Tanner states that "The new map of the United States is founded on, and embraces generally, the valuable and original information, contained in our American Atlas," the general form of the map bears a striking resemblance to J.&A. Walker's Map of the United States published in London in 1827, a fact that Tanner does not mention. Howes (T23) shows "An Alphabetical Index to the four sheet map of the United States," also to accompany editions of the map. This is one of best early large maps of the United States and the premier map for its period, without equal until Mitchell produced the first edition of his Reference and Distance Map of the United States in 1834. Kept in a half leather case with ties to keep it closed. Measuring 23x18, it has "Tanner's United States" embossed on the red leather spine. |
