This map is based on a Buddhist conceptual view of the world with India at the center, yet it includes contemporary European geographical knowledge -- Europe is shown as a group of islands in the upper left corner and South America is is an island in the ocean south of Japan on the right side. The map has many place names in Asia not found on European maps of the period. In the center of the map in the Himalayan Mountains is a quadruple helix symbolizing the origins of the four great rivers of the region (the Indus, the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Sutlej rivers) emanating from the heads of a horse, a lion, an elephant, and an ox. This is the site of the present day Lake Manasarovar, the highest fresh water lake in the world. "A land bridge connects China to an unnamed continent in the upper right corner ..."--Cortazzi. The 1st ed. of this map, here published as a complete chart of six sheets joined, dissected into 16 sections and folded into Jeffery's original case with a printed label: "Bought of Thomas Jefferys Engraver..." Both map and case are preserved in a new half cloth blue marbled paper book-like case 36x31 with "Green And Jefferys. Chart of North and South America. 1753." stamped in gilt on a leather label on the spine. "This is one of the most important American maps of the period, the first to label Behring's Straits, and the most accurate of the time in establishing more correct placements of the coasts of North and South America and Northeastern Asia. The map is extensively annotated by Green to show the differences of latitude and longitude between his placements on the map and other cartographers, notably Bellin, D'Anville, Brouckner, Popple, and especially DeLisle and Buache in their claims of new discoveries on the American Northwest coast. Jefferys also published Green's "Remarks, In Support of the New Chart of North and South America, in six sheets" which further detail Green's attack on DeLisle's cartography and French claims to the American Northwest. The six sheets of this map are also found bound individually with the text, as in Streeter 3453. Our copy has a printed paste down label in the lower corner of sheet six that explains the color code used to distinguish the different claims of the British, French, etc. Stevens & Tree list several later issues of this chart, including those that appear in Jeffery's American Atlas of 1775. This is the second edition of this important map, dated 1755 but published in 1757, according to the British Museum. The only change from the first issue is the addition of several panels of interesting text in ocean. The original eight printed sheets of the map are here assembled in two large panels (each with four sheets) each dissected into 36 sections and mounted on linen. Uncolored, as issued. In the sixth line of the first column of the text this issue is referred to as the Second Edition One of the most important maps in American history, it went through five editions (see Stevens). We believe this second edition is scarcer than the other editions as it appears less often on the market. Compare to the first French edition of 1856 (our copy) regarding the conflicting claims of the British and French to American territory. |

This map was published separately and at the same time as Hutchins' "Topographical Description..." and should accompany the book. Streeter calls it "by far the best map of the west printed to that time." It was the first large scale map of the area west of the Allegheny Mountains based on personal observations, although Hutchins gives credit to Lewis Evans' "Map of the Middle Colonies" as the best prior source of information about the area. The map contains extensive printed notes which describe important aspects of the country depicted. This map ranks with the most important American maps issued in the 18th century and is now rare. Hutchins later became the first Geographer of the United States. With outline color. Map is dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen. Wheat & Brun: "This is the best map of Pennsylvania to appear in the 18th century, and the first detailed map of the State to show its exact boundaries." This copy is a mixed state, as is usually the case, with the title and dedication in the first state. It is fully colored by county by a contemporary hand. Wheat & Brun list the first four states as 1792, with states V and VI as 1795, state VII as 1798, and state VIII as 1806. Ristow lists later editions of 1816 and 1817 published by Emmor Kimber in Philadelphia. Howell also published a smaller Map of Pennsylvania, reduced from the large map, in 1792, with later issues in 1795 and 1796, Ristow lists editions of 1811 and 1817. Howell's maps were the first maps of the state published after the revolution, and were used until Melish published his map in 1822. Samuel Lewis used Howell's map as the source for his Pennsylvania map in Carey's American Atlas of 1795. Map is dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into its original brown leather slip case 24x17.5 with "Howell's Map" printed on the front in ink, and then into a new dark green cloth folding case 25x18 with -Pennsylvania R. Howell 1792" stamped on the spine in gold. |

Smyth was the first Surveyor General of Canada and in 1799 wrote "A Short Topographical Description of His Majesty's Province of Upper Canada, In North America" which was sold with the map. This map is the first edition of the "Smyth Series" which went through 13 separate editions to 1858 (see Farrell, Explorations in the History of Canadian Mapping, pp152-154). Smyth's name was dropped from all editions after 1835. Faden published the map until 1818, Wyld published it after 1831. Longest publishing history of any map of the region (Farrell). This map is entirely a copy of Arrowsmith's Map of the United States (see our 1796 issue) except for certain parts (mentioned by Tardieu in his "Note" above the title) that Tardieu has altered and improved, based on other sources. A Plan of Washington, D.C. is also added. Later editions depart more radically from Arrowsmith and this actually becomes a better map in many respects (certainly more up to date regarding new States and Territories) than the Arrowsmith editions, although Arrowsmith remains better in the areas west of the Mississippi. This is a highly detailed general chart of the West Indies that is similar in scope and size to Arrowsmith's chart of the same area, but Dessiou's chart gives more detail to the coast lines, harbors, water depths, currents and less detail of the inland areas. We can find no specific reference to this wonderful chart, other than Tooley's Dictionary. Dessiou is listed in the National Maritime Museum Catalog as the author of a London edition of Le Petit Neptune Francais, also published by Faden. Scarce. Stokes: "This is one of the most complete, accurate, and beautiful early engraved maps showing New York and its environs." It was engraved by Peter Maverick. Stokes states that J. M. Atwood reengraved this map in 1846 for Colton (although the reengraving changed the map substantially). The 1828 reissue was in guide book form by Hooker and Blunt, Disturnell issued the 1836 and 39 editions (see our 1839 issue), and Goodrich issued the 1842 edition. Stokes dates the map at 1811 because of a reference to its publication in the October, 1811 issue of The American Medical and Philosophical Register. Eddy's name is written "I.H. Eddy" on the map, the "I" probably mistaken by the engraver for the "J." Map has outline color, dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen. Folds with a gray marbled end sheet into a new gray cloth folding case 21x13 with "Thirty Miles Round New York J. Eddy 1811" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

4th edition, corrected to 1812, but dated 1804. This map was originally issued in 1804. This copy is dated 1804 but is corrected for political and topographical changes to 1812. It shows Louisiana and Missouri Territory, both of which were established in 1812. There has been extensive redrawing of the Mississippi River from the junction of the Ohio north to the Wyaconda River (probably due to the public surveys in southern Illinois, evidenced by the appearance of Township and Range lines there). Numerous other changes from the 1804 edition have been made throughout the map adding new counties, towns, roads, and changed physical features, primarily in the mid and western portions. So far I have been able to identify 1804, 1806, 1809, and 1812 editions, but it is likely that other editions will be discovered. The dates are estimates based on the political changes on the maps - all editions are dated 1804 on the title. Since it was a postal map and needed to be current as to towns, road and counties, it is probable that the map was updated every few years, until a new plate was made in 1819 by Harrison (Karpinski 59, Karrow 1-1466). The 1796 edition of this map (a different engraving) was changed four times in as many years (Wheat & Brun 127-130). The 1819 edition became the official post office map in 1825, used until 1829 (Ristow). All of the 1804 to 1812 editions were originally engraved by Francis Shallus of Philadelphia. With outline color. This copy in original condition, dissected into 32 sections and mounted on linen, in original quarter leather marbled covers 27x20 with ties (remnants now) and title "Bradley's U. States" stamped in gild on the spine. |

The changes between this and the last edition (1811) are monumental. This copy is from the collection of Sir Charles Broke (or Brooke, subsequently Vere). Large map of the United States based on the Arrowsmith/Tardieu maps of the same period, with a similar "Falls of Niagara" cartouche. Engraved by Amos Doolittle. Interestingly, credit for the cartouche is given to Tardieu, who copied it from Arrowsmith (perhaps evidence of a prejudice against the British from the War of 1812?). This map is far superior to either the Arrowsmith or Tardieu maps: in the west it incorporates both of Pike's maps of the Upper Mississippi and the western tributaries of the Mississippi and the Missouri, east of the Mississippi, it uses much from the Bradley "Postal" map of the United States of 1804/1812, including public survey lines, county formations, township boundaries, roads, etc. There are two very interesting inset maps and a commentary on ancient fortifications along the Ohio River. This highly detailed and accurate map must be one of the best of its period. Outline color by states. This map has the distinction of being the first large scale detailed map made in the U.S. that showed the entire country from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This copy is an early state of the first edition -this is Martin's third state of the first edition and Ristow's fourth state (Ristow discovered a town and trail added in Ohio - Adelphi - making for a sub state of Martin's third state). The first state was an incomplete proof copy, making this the second/third state of the completed copy. The differences between this and the first complete state are small: Mansfield, Wooster, and Adelphi (and a trail from Adelphi to Athens and Chillicothe) added in Ohio, and "Vevay or" added before "Swiss Vineyards" in southeastern Indiana. Martin and Ristow identify seven states of the 1816 edition. Melish published new editions in 1818 (five states), 1819 (two states), 1820 (eight states), 1822 (two states), and 1823 (one state) for a total of twenty five different issues. Notwithstanding the many issues, the map has become extremely rare. A book accompanied the map (though issued separately) titled "A Geographical Description of the United States..." (see our #2424). Outline color by state or territory. This copy is dissected into 40 sections, backed with linen, and edged in brown cloth. It folds with marbled end sheets into new blue cloth folding boards and slip case 24.5x16.5 with leather label on spine reading "Melish. Map Of The United States. 1816" in gold. |
