1st edition, 1st issue - "Tennassee Government." Many changes from the later 1808/1811 issue - the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi are drawn very preliminarily and inaccurately, very few roads are shown throughout, there is a long note in the lower left corner about the boundaries of Georgia, parts of Maine and Canada are blank or inaccurately drawn, and Georgia and Tennessee have much less detail. Only the title sheet that shows the Carolinas and Virginia is about the same, except for fewer roads. As geographical knowledge increased about the parts north and west, Arrowsmith filled in this map. Outline color by state. In two sheets, each dissected into 16 sections and backed with linen. Folds into original tan marbled slip case 32x19 with a paste down label reading "North America. Date 1796" in ms, and "Sold by Wm. Allen 32 Dame Strt." printed in black ink. |

First edition. This map is entirely a copy of Arrowsmith's Map of the United States (see our 1796 issue) except for certain parts (mentioned by Tardieu in his "Note" above the title) that Tardieu has altered and improved, based on other sources. A Plan of Washington, D.C. is also added. Later editions depart more radically from Arrowsmith and this actually becomes a better map in many respects (certainly more up to date regarding new States and Territories) than the Arrowsmith editions, although Arrowsmith remains better in the areas west of the Mississippi. G. Gibbs name on label- a famous scientist, see DAB. Map folds into a new brown cloth folding case 32x26 with "United States P.F. Tardieu 1802" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

Watermark, J. Whatman 1811, NE sheet, lower left. Comparing to 79(d), 1804, I cannot find the changes indicated by Stevens, and comparing to 79(f), which only has added "-1815" in ms, I cannot find any changes either. It could be that this copy of 79(e) is later than the one Stevens saw as indicated by the 1811 watermark. There may be a 79(e) without the 1811 watermakr that is earlier. Outline color by state. Map is in four sheets, each dissected into 18 sections. Sheets fold, each with a label pasted to the linen backing reading "Sold by W. Faden, Geographer to His Majesty and to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. No. 5 Charing Cross." The four map sheets lie folded between two brown card end sheets, inside their original marbled paper slip case 22x13.5 with the same paste down label. |

With two inset charts. This is a highly detailed general chart of the West Indies that is similar in scope and size to Arrowsmith's chart of the same area, but Dessiou's chart gives more detail to the coast lines, harbors, water depths, currents and less detail of the inland areas. We can find no specific reference to this wonderful chart, other than Tooley's Dictionary. Dessiou is listed in the National Maritime Museum Catalog as the author of a London edition of Le Petit Neptune Francais, also published by Faden. Scarce. Map is dissected into 40 sections, and mounted and edged with linen. Outline color. The map has a paste down label on the end sheet reading "Sold by Wm. Faden, Geographer to the King, Charing Cross". Folds into a new blue cloth folding case 32.5x21 with "Chart Of The West Indies J. Foss Dessiou 1808" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

This issue incorporates the Lewis and Clark discoveries (and other discoveries) and remaps the entire continent west of the Mississippi. The changes between this and the last edition (1811) are monumental. This copy is from the collection of Sir Charles Broke (or Brooke, subsequently Vere). Broke was in Lower Canada with his regiment, the 5th (Northumberland) Regiment of Foot, which was at the battle of Plattsburg in 1814. Later, he was with the Army of Occupation in France, receiving the Waterloo medal despite arriving from Canada too late for the battle (from Manasek). Without color. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into a new gray cloth covered box case 29x22x7 with "North America A. Arrowsmith 1814" stamped on the spine in gold. |

Large map of the United States based on the Arrowsmith/Tardieu maps of the same period, with a similar "Falls of Niagara" cartouche. Engraved by Amos Doolittle. Interestingly, credit for the cartouche is given to Tardieu, who copied it from Arrowsmith (perhaps evidence of a prejudice against the British from the War of 1812?). This map is far superior to either the Arrowsmith or Tardieu maps: in the west it incorporates both of Pike's maps of the Upper Mississippi and the western tributaries of the Mississippi and the Missouri, east of the Mississippi, it uses much from the Bradley "Postal" map of the United States of 1804/1812, including public survey lines, county formations, township boundaries, roads, etc. There are two very interesting inset maps and a commentary on ancient fortifications along the Ohio River. This highly detailed and accurate map must be one of the best of its period. Outline color by states. Maps is dissected into 35 sections and folds into marbled paper end sheet, then into a new gray cloth folding case 28x23 with "United States Shelton And Kensett 1816" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

The date is estimated, the only date on the map being 1812. Compared to the 1812 edition, Alabama Territory is added (1817) and Mississippi is a state (1817). Indiana Territory has been divided into Illinois and Indiana Territories, Missouri Territory appears with Louisiana as a state (1812), and there are many additions of towns and roads in the Midwest and Southeast. Chicago appears. The only major topographical changes we can find are in the Florida/Georgia border and coast line. The next issue of this map was the 1820 dated issue. Comparing this map to the Arrowsmith "additions to 1819" issue of the Map of the United States, one is impressed that Tardieu's map is far more up to date. Even though Tardieu began by copying the Arrowsmith map, his editions are consistently more current with the political and topographical changes of the times. Map is in four sheets, each dissected into 15 sections, and backed and edged in linen. Outline color by state. Sheets folds into original brown marbled slip case 22x15 embossed in gold with "Metz. Lacking the two eastern sheets which include the title. This issue is earlier slightly than our complete 1819 edition (Stevens 79 (i)) with less development shown in the area around the junction of the Ohio and Wabash Rivers, which were settling up rapidly at that time (see David Thomas "Travels Through The Western Country"). However, it has the northern and (most of) the southern flaps which place it later than Stevens 79 (h). So it is probably an unrecorded state of the map. Map has light blue silk edging, is dissected into 25 sections, and folds into a new blue cloth folding case 26x17 with "United States A. Arrowsmith 1819" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

5th ed."Hydrographer to His Majesty." Dated 1810. Four separate sheets dissected into 16 sheets each, with light blue silk edging and linen backing. Streeter is incorrect in calling this the first edition, it is actually the last. The Adams - Onis Treaty line of 1819 is clearly marked, Arrowsmith styled himself "Hydrographer to His Majesty" in 1820 (Tooley), this edition has a road from Queretaro to Panco Valles which does not appear in W.H.'s additions to 1815 edition, as well as other roads and new towns around Mexico City and two small groups of islands off the California Coast that do not appear on the 1810 edition, this edition appears in the Atlas to Thompson's Alcedo, c.1825 copy, in the Bancroft. The mystery is why Arrowsmith did not add "additions to 1820" on the title, and in fact erased the "additions to 1817" that must have appeared on the plate from the most recent changes made before the 1820 changes, thereby leaving only 1810 on the title. With outline color. The sheets fold with marbled end sheets into a new tan cloth folding case 26x18 with "Mexico A. Arrowsmith 1820" stamped on the spine in gold. |

The first edition, listed in Phillips but not by Stevens and Tree or Wheat (both list 1824/25 as the first edition). A large impressive map showing with great accuracy the recent discoveries in the north west passage, but wildly off in the American southwest - Wheat: "a large and beautiful map, excellent in all respects save for its southwestern geography." In the southwest, Wyld adds many mountain ranges that were purely speculative - probably just to fill in blank spaces in the map (unlike Arrowsmith). In northwestern Texas is a curious note on the topography of the area attributed to "Mellish" which is copied from a pre-1822 edition of his large map of the United States. Comparing this edition to the derived map of 1846, "Mexico, the British Possessions...," one sees many changes in the northern areas and few in the southwest. Stevens and Tree list editions of 1824, 1827/8, 1838, and 1851/56. The 1824/25 edition adds a fold out flap of Mexico and Central America (WH copy). With outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Map folds into a brown marbled paper covered slip case with black leather spine with "Map Of North America" stamped in gilt. |

With 48 inch spheres, this may be one of the largest World Maps produced in the early 1800's. Arrowsmith's Map of the World on a Globular Projection had 36 inch spheres and was last published in 1814. Gardner's map is fairly up to date in the American Northwest, less so in the plains area. He probably used Wyld's and Arrowsmith's maps of North America as sources. Not in Phillips or Wheat. British Museum World catalog lists this edition and an 1837 edition. The drawing and engraving of this map is very elegant and spare. In eight sheets, dissected into 6 sections each, and mounted on linen with dark green silk edging. Outline color. Folds into a new gray cloth folding case 36x23 with "Western And Eastern Hemispheres J. Gardner 1825" stamped in gold on the spine. |

The third edition (although I can detect no changes from the first issue of 1830). Has the note in the lower left explaining the origin of the term of Fredonia. This map is the only one I have seen that copies almost literally three earlier maps: Lewis and Clark (1814), Long (1822), and Arrowsmith's Mexico (1820). Laurie used the term Fredonia, we may assume, to create a novelty of his map, in the same manner as his "Cabotia" map of 1814. Has the original case with label, and an advertisement for Crunchley's publications on the verso of the map. W. Heckrotte has another edition dated 1834 improved to 1836 (with changes in California based on John Arrowsmith's Map of British North America, 1834), and the second edition of 1832. The western topography is changed to incorporate Arrowsmith's map of 1834 (British North America) and an independent Texas is shown. Editions seen of 1830, 1832, 1834, 1836, 1849. It appears that the map was updated frequently in order to keep it current. It is an excellent and beautiful map. |
