List No 3149.000
Note Removed from a British publication on boundary disputes with the U.S. At the top of the map is "No. 2." The map proposes that either the U.S. give up to Britain major parts of the Northeastern states, or Britain would take instead the entire North West Territories. This shows some of the disputes that lead to the War of 1812. The date is estimated. Map is without color. Shows boundaries, and some color outline administrative divisions. Includes explanatory remarks. Relief shown by hachures.

The Karpinski copy adds Doolittle as engraver. The following year Kensett with Shelton put out a more general map of the U.S. showing vignettes of sea battles. Outline color. Not in Phillips. Scarce.

Dedicated By Permission To Commodore Robert Barrie, C.B. &c. &c. &c. By his Obliged Obedient Humble Servant, David Taylor, R.N. March 1834. Engraved By S. Stiles & Co. New York.
List No 4691A
Note Scarce map of Upper Canada and the Northeastern United States west to eastern Illinois. This is, for its period, one of the most detailed maps of the U.S. and Canadian border area that we have seen. Taylor lists his sources carefully, and, mysteriously, it appears that this map was his only production, other than an obscure map of the Ottawa river country (Winearls 584). We believe that this is the first large Canadian map drawn by Canadians that was engraved in America - all of its predecessors, including the early maps by Smyth, Holland, and the Bouchettes, were engraved and printed in London. Uncolored. Map is in two sheets, each dissected into 30 sections. Folds into half leather marbled paper covered boards 17x12.

Full Title Map Of The United States Of America With Its Territories & Districts. Including also a part of Upper & Lower Canada And Mexico. Published By B.B. Barber & A. Willard, Hartford, 1835.
List No 2240.000
Note 1st ed. was 1833, later editions by Reed & Barber. An unusual map in two sheets, showing the continent coast to coast. Tanner's influence from his North America map is evident in the west, and Long's map has influenced the plains, but Tanner's U.S. map is the primary source, in the Oregon District, the Plains, and the area east of the Mississippi. The Great Basin is filled with a table of distances and heights of mountains (which convention appears in several maps published in Hartford about this time by Thrall, Huntington, Olney's Geography, etc.). Wheat mentions the 1849 and 1850 editions of this map published by Reed and Barber, but this much earlier and different edition was unknown to him. Not in Phillips. Views of the Capital and the White House. Phelps did a related and somewhat smaller map in 1833 - see our copy. After the 1835 edition, no editions until the 1848 by Reed and Barber (see our 1849, 1850 and 1854 editions). Map is in full color.

Full Title Map of North America from the latest authorities. Published by J.H. Colton. No. 86 Cedar St., New York. 1852. Drawn & Engraved by J.M. Atwood, New York. (with) Map of the Gold Region. California.
List No 4715.000
Note See our #3507 and #170 for related maps. This map shows most of Alaska but not as far north as #3507. It is not clear where this map came from - it was folded to fit into a quarto sized book (not present here), and it may have been in the 1852 issue of the United States Register by John Disturnell, as #3507 was in the 1854 United States Register (see our 1861 U.S. Register by Disturnell with a smaller Colton Map). This map was also published in 1852 to accompany volume one of Richard Swainson Fisher's "The Book of The World", NY, J.H. Colton, two volumes, 8vo. It has the inset map of the gold regions, and the inset has been updated with many towns, etc. The main map has also been updated in the West, showing Utah, New Mexico, California, reduced Texas, etc. There is no inset map of South America as appears in the 1849 issue, and this map extends much further to the north to include most of Canada and about half of Alaska. All three of these maps were probably derived from Colton's Map of North America that is listed in his catalogues from 1851 to 1855 and is somewhat larger, we assume because of decorative borders. Strangely, that map is not found in any references. Without color. Includes view: Pyramid Lake, Upper California (i.e., Nevada)

Note This is the first year that Colton published this map. Iowa is now fully developed with counties, and there is major railroad growth in Indiana and Illinois, among other changes from the 1850 edition. This is probably the late 1852 issue - Karrow 1-1578 is the same map without Colton's name in the title, indicating that Colton took over publishing the map later in the year. Full color by county. Map is dissected into 36 sections, mounted on linen. Folds into marbled end sheets and a new black cloth folding case 36x30 with "Colton's Map Of The United States J. List No 3507.000
Note Removed from the United States Register by John Disturnell for 1854 (Wheat 801 refers to this as the "Congressional Directory, 1st Session, 33rd Congress"). Wheat missed the fact that this map is taken from the same base map as Colton's 1849 "Map of the United States, The British Provinces...Showing The routes of The U.S. Mail Steam Packets to California..." It has the same inset view of Pyramid Lake, but the inset map of the Gold Regions is omitted as well as the inset of South America. A table is added in the upper right of "Geographical Statistics." And this later map extends northward about 8 inches further than the 1849 map, to include all of Alaska and Canada. Several railroad routes to the west coast are shown, and there is a mysterious circle about six inches in diameter (about 1400 miles in scale) around Chicago, with no explanation given for it. Nebraska is shown in reduced size, but no Kansas. There are many updates to the map in the West, compared to the 1849. Disturnell published the U.S. Directories during the 1840's, 50's, 60's, and 70's, and most of them had one or another of Colton's North America maps. See also our somewhat different 1852 issue (#4715). Full and outline color. Shows railroads, trails, roads, town and cities, Indian tribal areas, and drainage. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington, D.C.

Note This is the third year of Colton's publication of this map. Other than adding his name to the title, the map remains the same, except for many changes in the topographical and political information: Washington, Oregon, Utah, New Mexico and California (but not Kansas yet) are shown on the inset map of North America. On the main map Iowa's western counties are filled out, Texas adds many counties in the west, and railroad growth is explosive throughout, all compared to the 1850 edition. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county with states outlined.

Note First edition. Very large map of North America with nine inset maps of important cities. This map contains and is the basis of all the maps that appear in the Rogers and Johnston Atlas of the United States of North America, published in the same year. It is a stunning map, very detailed in the west, Wheat did not see this map, but did comment on two of the western maps in the Atlas - "This map is...notable for its clarity, though it is equally notable for the amount of information it contains. W and A.K. Johnston, of Edinburgh, were engravers who well understood their art, and their maps are outstanding." The Proposed Pacific Railway routes are shown. This map compares favorably to the large Colton and Mitchell U.S. maps of the same date (which are also on the same scale) and generally it is more accurate. Scarce, with only the later 1861 edition (title slightly changed - "Map of the United States and Mexico, with Canada...") in Karrow. This first edition is not in any references. A later edition, 1859, was issued with geological coloring (HR 13-123). The map case has Stanford's name at the bottom of the spine, indicating that he sold the map (and perhaps printed it as he did the Atlas). See also the 1861 U.S. only edition (#5405) and the full 1869 edition (#5402).
