Smyth was the first Surveyor General of Canada and in 1799 wrote "A Short Topographical Description of His Majesty's Province of Upper Canada, In North America" which was sold with the map. This map is the first edition of the "Smyth Series" which went through 13 separate editions to 1858 (see Farrell, Explorations in the History of Canadian Mapping, pp152-154). Smyth's name was dropped from all editions after 1835. Faden published the map until 1818, Wyld published it after 1831. Longest publishing history of any map of the region (Farrell). See our 1818 and the Wyld 1838 for later versions. See Sabin 85205 for more on Smyth and the map. Map has outline color by hand, is dissected into 16 sections and mounted on linen. | Note |
This is an atlas of three maps on 13 sheets: the large map of Lower Canada on ten sheets (scale 1:174,240, size 133x307), the map of Upper and Lower Canada on two sheets (scale 1:2,200,000, size 76x123), and the single sheet map of Gaspe (scale 1:506,880, size 40x48). These maps were intended to accompany Bouchette's Topographical Description of Lower Canada (see our copy). The first two maps have outline color. Atlas is bound into half leather marbled paper covered boards. The title on the atlas spine "Description Topograph du Bas Canada" may indicate that this atlas was issued to accompany the 1815 French edition of the book published in London (Sabin 6850). The large ten sheet map is extraordinary - it is over ten feet long when joined and almost five feet tall. It has five views and three large inset maps of Montreal, Quebec, and Three Rivers. The detail and graphic elegance of the large map is the equal (or perhaps the superior) of any of the contemporary maps that we have seen (and none of which are on such a large scale - the only potential candidate would be Eddy's Map of the Country Thirty Miles Round the City of New York). Of course the engraving was done by the Walker firm in London, whose resources were up to the New York and Philadelphia engravers, or better, so a comparison with American produced maps is not entirely fair. Bouchette's work as Surveyor General must have instilled in him an obsession with the accuracy and fineness of detail that one sees in these maps. |

Issued to accompany the author's "British Dominions..." of 1832. In the preface, referring to this map and the map of Quebec, Bouchette states "In the general frame work of the maps of Lower Canada, which are upon a large and explanatory scale, the author was materially aided by his previous topographical exhibit of that province, published in 1815...but the details are entirely new and compiled, with the greatest care, from numerous original surveys and documents of indubitable authenticity, that have enabled him to lay down every minutia of topography." And on the last page of volume one, the maps are stated to be "hitherto unequaled for local precision." Essentially, this map of Montreal District and the sister map of Quebec are of the same large scale of the 1815 Map of Lower Canada, but actually enlarge the area of coverage (the mother map was already over ten feet long) to a combined length of over fifteen feet, all with massive updating to show the growth of settlement and survey. The Montreal map also emphasizes the Rideau Canal with a large inset map and by adding that portion of Upper Canada through with the canal passes (the text refers to the canal as Canada's equivalent of the Erie Canal). Another remarkable production by Bouchette. Map has outline color and is dissected into 33 sections. Folds with marbled end sheets into a half leather marbled paper covered slip case 35x23.5 with "Montreal" stamped in gilt on the spine. |

This map was issued after the 1837 rebellion against British rule. It shows transportation systems, militia locations, "Irish Settlements," towns, and "Disaffected Villages burnt by the Queen's troops" (including St. Denis and St. Charles). Water is handpainted in blue, otherwise map is without color. The map was lithographed by Day & Haghe, "Lithors to The Queen, Gate St." and as such is an early example of map lithography in the English map trade. Ristow points out that maps in Parliamentary papers were lithographed due to the need for quick reproductions, and the urgency of the 1837 Rebellion probably is the reason this map was lithographed. It is the only map published by Wyld that we have seen that was lithographed. This map did not have a wide circulation and is scarce. Relief shon by hachure. |
